149-mph cyclone could wallop Australia

A strong cyclone thrashed flood-ravaged Queensland, Australia, this week, but another storm is about to hit the highly populated north coast - and it is much bigger.

Forecasters say Cyclone Yasi could reach 149 miles per hour, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Many are concerned that Yasi could mean setbacks for the coal-mining sector of the region, which was socked by recent massive flooding, the paper reports.

Yasi is expected hit overnight Wednesday, according to The Australian, and will come ashore between Innisfail and Proserpine, directly hitting Queensland's capital, Townsville.

Yasi follows Cyclone Anthony, which hit this week with winds reaching 80 miles an hour, according to the Courier-Mail. The newspaper also had extensive coverage of the recent flooding, which affected 3 million people in one of the country's most costly disasters. Last week, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard proposed a tax to help cover flood damage, estimated at $5.6 billion.

Townsville is NOT the capital of Queensland. That would be Brusbane.

Its Australia. C'mon. They don't give us oil. Will we really miss em? Think about it. Now the kids only have to remember 6 continents. And since its 9 degrees here – bring me some o that global warming. Put it right in my backyard. I wanna look at it and touch it. I wonder what it smells like?

@Nelg – you are a tool. America gives the world cr*p sitcoms that no one really wants to watch, so if another hurricane blows through half of the US, would the world really miss them? Of course not.... As for global warming – go and live in Adeliade for a few weeks during the height of summer – you can have the global warming you want then. Yesterday it was 109.4 deg Fahrenheit (43 degrees celsius) and overnight it was 84.2 degrees F (29 deg c) – is that warm enough for you?? Good luck to those in Qld who are gonna have this monster bearing down on them soon enough – the magnatude of this cyclone will affect the coast as far south as Hervey Bay/Fraser isliand – about 900kms to the south (about 560 miles to the south. Think about that before you make stupid remarks.

may not export oil, they do produce 80 percent of there own oil, But they do export a magnitude of livestock and other raw materials, such as supplying around half of the world's coking coal, which is used to make steel. The price of coal and steel has already risen globally as a result. 75 percent of queenslands mines are not operating due to flooding. So the impact of a cyclone on top of the floods will massively impact international markets and international manufacturing of steel. So i guess if you couldn't care less about Oz maybe the idea of converting back to wooden wagons would change your mind. But the main concern confronting Australia is the well-being of lives. And as the world watches we hope they can also offer help if needed. As Australia has always offered.
