After mass dog slaughter, stressed man files workers' comp

An employee of Canada's Outdoor Adventures company admitted to slaughtering 100 sled dogs, according to a workers compensation report he later filed.

The employee - whose name authorities have not yet released - worked as a general manager of Howling Dogs tour company in Whistler, British Columbia. He claimed he was suffering from post-traumatic stress after carrying out company orders to kill the dogs, the report said.

A company with the same name, Howling Dogs Tours in Canmore, Alberta, has no connection with this case.

The man cited "a slow winter season" that compelled him to decrease the size of the company's dog pack by 30 percent, the report said.

The slaughter took place over the course of two days in April 2010, when he allegedly shot and knifed the animals before dumping them into a mass grave, including at least one dog that was later found alive, the report said.

If the company had really made an effort to adopt out the dogs, I would have heard about it through the rescue "network" that helped place over 200 racing greyhounds last winter when tracks in Wisconsin and Florida closed. I think one of the reasons why the company ordered this kill and the guy did it is that they don't see the dogs as pets – they were work animals whose function was to generate revenue, like farm animals and racing animals. When racing greyhounds are no longer good at the track, and if they are not picked up by an adoption agency, they are killed too. This is why I am a strong advocate of pet adoption and rescue – you are literally saving a life.

The irony lies in the fact that we are supposedly the evolved, smarter species, and yet dogs are loyal to their owners until the end. Dogs are incapable, obviously, of the intellect that it takes to comprehensively plan something like that. But they are instinctively loyal, they love unconditionally, and they would protect their owners were they to feel he was being endangered. I can not comprehend how supposedly intelligent people can think that this sort of thing is OK, it's acceptable, simply because you can do it, if you make up your mind that it's OK? It's beyond me, I just can't imagine what it took to go through with killing one perfectly healthy animal, let alone one hundred. PTS? I don't think so. Post-traumatic stupidity, maybe. They should lock up that guy and his boss, the cold-blooded bast*ards.

Couldn't they have put a ad in the paper or on the internet to give the dogs away?

The company should be shut down immediately. All parties who knew about should be arrested. Those who ordered the murders and the individual who perpetrated the murders should be jailed. The murderer should definitely not receive any kind of benefits; money, counseling, medical treatment or otherwise. He consciously chose to kill the dogs...he could have said 'no' and told the authorities of the planned action. I am pretty sure that the dogs could have been adopted out to multiple homes if people had known they were available for adoption. I, myself, have a Siberian Husky and she is a great member of our family...they make great family members with the proper home.

for those who love dogs – never buy dogs from pet stores. too many of them support puppy farms where dogs are held in horrible conditions...even the stores themselves basically keep these dogs in 'jail' until sold. buy from a reputable breeder and have them neutered

This man will eventually pay for this actions not only here on earth but when he thinks he might go to heaven. I have a snow dog myself and my gut wrenches just thinking of what he did to these incredible animals. I'd lock him up with a life sentence after a legal trial and he'd hardly the see the light of day for the rest of his life. I would hope that the cell they lock him up in is a hole dug into the ground right next to where he buried the dogs and bars above his head with the sky peeking through. Keeping LOOKING UP dude because ultimately that is who you are going to answer to .... The Lord himself. Worker's Comp, my A$$ !!

I live in America, but I would assume they have Rescue organizations in Canada like they do in the U.S.! Why didn't they take the dogs to rescue? I hope the S.O.B. is depressed! He's the Michael Vick of Canada.

One would expect this coming from a third world mentality, but from Canada is really surprising. Looks like they have the almighty dollar signs in their collective heads, just like in the United States. How sad money comes before these beautiful animals. But i guess the $ sign trumps all.

IHmmm . I think Americans are goin crazy. I met a American woman who sleeps with her dogs and makes love to them. Maybe that's why they are so infuriated.

Dogs are killed – bad thing but move on. Focus on Human suffering in your OWN backyard – millions without heath iinsurance, mass shootings every weekend, mothers killing their own children, guns more rampant than high school diplomas, massive unemployment and layoffs and huge HUNGER problem affecting 20-35 million Americans.

Fix your human garbage first and then comment about Canadian dogs or seals etc

This article is about CANADIAN DOGS and didn't you read it correctly? Human waste comes from all places on earth no matter what country, what color, or size.

You know someone who makes love to her dog, and you can't figure out that that person needs help??? You think it's because she is an American???? How shockingly ignorant of you! Yes, we have millions without healthcare, but as a doctor, I can tell you, any of them can walk into any emergency room anywhere in the U.S. and they are given FREE healthcare. We don't have "mass shootings' every weekend, although one is enough for me. Yes, mothers have killed their children in the U.S., as they have in Canada, India, London, etc. It's hardly an American pastime. Your comment about guns being more common than high school diplomas just proves your ignorance. Unemployment is at about 10%, which is high. It happened because of former LIBERAL president Clinton! You are clearly uninformed.

I agree that what was done was cruel and heartless and we here in the US need to cleanup our own garbage before throwing stones.

This is beyond disgusting. The owner of Outdoor Adventures Whistler, Joey Houssain, is the son of Joe Houssain who is in the process of moving the headquarters of Intrawest from Vancouver to Denver.
