Aguilera flubs national anthem at Super Bowl

O say, can Christina have a do-over?

Christina Aguilera helped kick off Sunday's Super Bowl with a singer's nightmare, flubbing the words of "The Star-Spangled Banner" about 40 seconds into the song as tens of millions prepared to watch the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Standing at midfield at Texas' Cowboys Stadium, the singer-actress mixed a previously sung clause with the one she was supposed to be on.

Here's what she sang, with the error in bold:

"O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last [unintelligible].”

That fourth line was supposed to be: "O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming."

In a statement released by her publicist, Aguilera explained what happened:

"I got so lost in the moment of the song that I lost my place," the singer said. "I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."

Aguilera isn't the first person to have trouble with the song, as Time magazine's "Top 10 Worst National-Anthem Renditions" will remind us.

The list includes Michael Bolton's effort at a 2003 playoff baseball game in Boston's Fenway Park, where he had to pause midsong and check some notes before correctly getting through the same line that troubled Aguilera.

Aguilera sang the national anthem twice during last year's NBA finals. She delivered both performances without incident.

- CNN's Denise Quan contributed to this report.

excuse me...but to the "non-americans" who are posting that AMERICANS do not know this song you are surely wrong. look at the faces at the people in the audience and EVERYONE KNEW IT. we learn that song in elementary school.
and also, we don't talk nor judge your national anthem so shut the hell up about ours!
it is a song to be respected! you don't need to embellish it with "runs or scats" to inflate your ego. sing it the way it was written, just like carrie underwood did it a year ago at the superbowl.
if you actually want to hear the song the way it is supposed to be sung click here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSiRUSjSJnQ

Even if she sang it right no one can top Whitney Houston's rendition of our national anthem.

There are some awfully mean spirited comments here. She did blow her line, but I can believe she got caught up in the emotion of the moment. And, Bimbo or not, the woman can really sing. And she clearly sang with her whole heart.

The whole thing was disgusting. If you don't know the song, don't sing it. For me, she had no business singing it in the first place. There are a lot of people who could sing it who actually know the words, and are AMERICANS.

The only thing worse than this was the 5 seconds they gave to the Medal of Honor soldier. At the end of the half time show when everyone is going to take a leak or get another beer, they made an announcement that he was in attendance. He should have been the one doing the coin toss. He should have been recognized on the field. But instead we had Deion Sanders. Way to go Fox.

This was one of the worst renditions ever. Whoever hired her should be fired. She should never again be allowed to butcher our national anthem. She was a disgrace to our country and to herself.

After a bazillion times hearing supposed professional singers butchering the NOTES of our National Anthem, flubbing the words doesn't bother me much anymore (picking my poison). Maybe she couldn't practice the song enough to remember them. DO all of YOU remember all the lyrics? I don't; I'd have to practise for a few weeks.

BOTTOM LINE: I'll take botched lyrics to off-key notes anyday. She did a great job singing & holding pitch!

She can give the bleach blonde/orange fake tan look a rest already. Awful!
Is our newest Lohan? Appears so. Ever since she left her awesome husband, she has stumbled in life quite a bit.

How about just singing the song instead of trying to "make it your own?" Maybe then you won't get lost in the moment LOL.

Not only was that the WORST rendition of the National Anthem I have ever heard, missing the words is inexcusable. Why do these so called "Divas" need to completely oversing everything? And, that lipstick made her look like a blow up doll....

I think my surprise is aimed at CNN. Why is this your big headline...and the fact that the Packers won the Superbowl is found somewhere hidden in the "sports" section?
