100-foot-long narco sub found in Colombia

The Colombian military has seized a 100-foot-long submarine capable of transporting eight tons of cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, news reports say.

The vessel was found in a jungle area in Timbiqui in southwestern Colombia on Sunday, according to a report from RTT News.

Colombian navy officials said the homemade sub had two diesel engines and sophisticated navigational equipment that would enable it to travel to Mexico while remaining up to 30 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean.

The vessel was set up for a crew of four but was unoccupied when found,  RTT reported. Officials estimated it would have cost $2 million to build.

The submarine is just the latest example of crafts smugglers have made to try to get their illicit cargo past law enforcement.

Last year, VBS.TV got access to the Colombian naval base where many captured smuggling vessels are taken.

John Walsh had one on his show once and I just happened upon it flipping through channels. You would think that with all of their drug profits they would go down to Argentina and get an old Nazi sub or a black market Soviet one, instead of some man-made ghetto hoopty sub !!!

Maybe they have. That's why we found this one.

Narcos are strange animals. They make execution videos on the internet, dig complex tunnels underneath national borders, have the latest technology, and make cute little narco subs.

Don't believe what you see in the movies about the navy's under water capabilities. These (sub's) would sound about the same as a fishing boat on the surface to one of our sub's. You would need to have eye's on them to know the difference. That's the problem for our navy...
Since all of our harbors have no under water detection abilities, someone could park this next to or under a dock in NYC with a 7 ton bomb. Would make 9/11 and pearl harbor look like a joke.

No it wouldn't a 14,000 pound bomb going off underwater would do nothing more that kick up a bunch of spray...the water would absorb all of the bomb's energy...

True. But next to or under a ship or sitting on top of a sub way line.

It does? Really? How? Ohhhh yeah, you must mean because it's 100 feet long and costs $2 million. Nice try though.

I like the the news reporters say (made to try to get their illicit cargo past law enforcement.) like it wasn't successful. It was probably abandoned and they probably have a newer faster sub.

Typical CNN...This was actually "found" last July. Total hoax. It actually was no where near the 30meter length claimed (in reality, it was only about 45 ft long)...other (non-official) pictures show that the hull just ends right behind the conning tower (looks like it was cut by a knife, actually...rather freaky!). In reality it was just a old washed ashore storage tank that had a chickenwire and cement conning tower added and was used by some german expats as a prop in a indie film. (trying to track down info on the film, but google translater is being problematic)
But then, I guess that the *appearance* of winning the drug war is alot more important than actually doing it.

You've got to love how many young people in America today seem to have "cynicism" confused with "solution." Keep treating The Daily Show like your nightly news, kids...it's really really working well for America.

no, kevin is right. I saw this exact article on CNN twice before actually. People will stoop pretty low these days in journalism; although there have always been those types of people around. but yea, it seems the need to have a good turn out in the drug war has caused a falsification in news. CNN lies. i wonder if my comment will get deleted too? conspiracy?

The state of Colorado balanced their budget deficit with money from their medical marijuana tax. Saw a program about it. VERY HEAVILY REGULATED from growers to sellers to the docs. The goverment needs to hide under the facade of "medical" use so the GOP will agree. Now almost everyone I know has some kind of ache or pain that can be "eased" with a few hits so I imagine the medical requirement will go away in a couple of years. But its working for those with pain and the pain in the budget.

That's AWESOME! Just the mechanical engineering to make something like that in the backwaters of Colombia is impressive. By the way – I've been to Bogota Colombia twice in the last 12 months and it is a wonderful place to visit.

If drug smugglers can build that then what's to stop a country from building a small sub, loading a nuclear weapon on it, sailing it undetected up the Hudson and detonating it next to midtown Manhattan??
