Gotta Watch: Reasons to love Detroit

Detroit has lost a quarter of its population in the past decade. That's about 237,000 people, according to new Census figures. Lawmakers blame crime, political scandals, the collapse of the automobile industry, the housing market ... and the list goes on. However, things in Detroit aren't all bad. These videos underscore some of the great things happening in the Motor City.

Seeing past urban decay - Nothing positive in Detroit? Our friends over at VBS don't think so. They meet artists and musicians who say Detroit is a blank canvas full of possibility.

Greening Detroit roots – An environmental group sets up shop in one of Detroit's roughest neighborhoods. Their mission: to revitalize Detroit by going green. But how? We'll let them explain.

Education makeover – Math can be frightening in any city. But even more so in a city that has a staggering number of dropouts and seems to be failing its kids. Several Wayne State University professors are determined to change this and have practically reinvented the subject at math camp.

JC-VA: Based on your one poorly-written post in which you call out another poster for using the common "ppl" while not using correct grammar, I am convinced that you suck. Sorry, hopefully you can learn from this experience and improve your personality.

You are going to the web and looking for grammer? You must live in a hole and have no friends and never get tweets, txt msgs, facebook updates, etc. LOL. Note: The term LOL means laughing out loud, usually not literally, but as an inication the someone is laughing or making a joke.

      Dear Mr. RobertDennis:
Your comment contains errors and grammar. First, you have incorrectly spelled "grammar." Secondly, "LOL" is an incomplete sentence lacking a subject. It is advisable that you learn proper grammer and spelling on your own prior to criticizing another person's writing.

Hey, to all of you criticizing Chrissy. If you have nothing to say about the topic, please refrain from saying anything. First, plenty of people who respond to blogs and news articles are doing so from their personal mobile devices, and they are not in an essay contest. So, your comments are irrelevant and have no bearing on the story and does not take away from the point Chrissy is trying to make.

I totally agree – I worked in Detroit for 9 years and never had no trouble and loved the people and the churches and the culture there. But, who in their right mind would choose to stay and pay the Detroit City income tax? Instead of a tax penalty you ought to get a subsidy I think. The income tax has driven a large portion of the economy in Detroit underground too, so many businesses are cash only and probably not reporting anything.

I am new to the Detroit area from Chicago. lI can't say that I like it..but I see the possibilities. It does seem like a blank canvas ready for creativity. It could have as much to offer as Chicago if managed correctly! I predict it will rise again and become a vibrant metropolis!
There are some lovely people here!

Too sad...it was once a boom town. Now TORONTO is bigger than Detroit. Soon or later Windsor will be bigger than Detroit.

Windsor bigger than Detroit? Never happen. Or maybe it will happen when they finish the entrance to the Ambassador Bridge on the US side? When will that be again, exactly?

I have lived in both TO and Windsor. When in To I love the metal detectors at all the major night clubs downtown. The price of everything is double. Getting from the DVP to west side of town takes 2-3 hours in traffic. And I love that no-one answers there cell before 6pm cause its too expensive. Ans TO would not be anything if the anti anglophone movement in Montreal scared every major company to move to Toronto. And as for Windsor, Jasons is now Dannys. It is a supplier town. The hump on the camel never out grows the camel.

How can you defend a city such as Detroit, when a City Councilman -Charles Pugh blames the incorrect Cencus count on the fact that alot of Detroiter's are in JAIL. The excuse being they were unable to fill out or be included in the population count. Pretty much says it all about Detroit.

I grew up in Detroit, off Woodward ave near 6 mile road. Watched the riots chase people out, but we stayed another 18 years living there. Watching so many people move out and crime continue to go up.
Bottom line, very corrupt city government, unions that broke the auto industry and soaring crime.....

The outsourcing of jobs has killed Detroit, and the resultant crime, poverty and migration are symptoms of this outsourcing. Hating ie. kicking this once great city when it is down is un-American. Bravo Steve and others: you are as classy as trailer park rats. I suspect the demise of Detroit presages the demise of America as a superpower, so chew on that thought when you're all in the same sinking boat.

This artical is propaganda and some of you readers are the dopes who buy this line of bull. Unions and Libs are what created Detroit. Keep it. I wouldn't dent my worst enemy there.

What... you aren't here to trash the heck out of the city you used to live in (or in the case of most posters here, have never been too/couldn't locate on a map)? I'm not sure that is allowed... :)

I've been all over and pretty much everywhere is a mix of good and bad. Detroit has some serious problems, but you could say that about pretty much any major city in America. I find it fairly amusing how people who have never been there are getting their troll quota of the day by trashing Detroit (and that includes quite a few "Metro Detroiters" who have never been to the city other than to drive through or attend a sporting event). I've spent quite a bit of time there and it isn't the most dangerous American city I've been in; I can think of 4-5 other that are far worse.

On a side note; Austin, TX is a great town. I can't think of any city I'd rather live in if I were inclined to move.
