6.8-quake strikes Myanmar

A powerful earthquake hit Myanmar Thursday near its borders with China, Thailand and Laos, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake hit in eastern Myanmar, about 55 miles (89 kilometers) north of Chiang Rai, Thailand, the survey reported.

It had a magnitude of 6.8, the survey said, revising the estimate down from an initial reading of 7.0.

It was a relatively shallow quake, which can be very destructive.

The Geological Survey initially said the quake had a depth of 142 miles (230 kilometers), but it later revised its estimate to say the quake was 6 miles (10 kilometers) deep, putting it fairly close to the surface.

A second quake hit about half an hour later, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The center of the quake was 589 kilometers (365 miles) northeast of Yangon, and 772 kilometers (479 miles) north of Bangkok, Thailand. It was 104 miles (168 kilometers) south-southwest of Yunjinghong, Yunnan, China.

A destructive tsunami is not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.  In advice to government agencies, the center said the quake "is located too far inland and too deep inside the earth to generate a tsunami in the Indian Ocean."

Sorry for the folks of Burma. BTW, CNN, it is Burma, not "Myanmar". Using that name only bolsters the thugs who thought it up.

First off, condolences to the families of the dead. A 7.0 in that nation will leave a number of ppl dead.
Secondly, I HOPE that this brings an end to their 'NUCLEAR MEDICAL REACTOR' that they have. That reactor was buried more than 100' underground and is the largest 'medical' reactor in the world by 10x. Likewise, hopefully, it will stop the work that North Korea and China have been doing on it, along with the massive centrifuge room.

I pray that everyone over there safe and ok, and that all telecommunications are restored so that the many fans of ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER can see him inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame in two weeks.

While I agree that we should repent of our worldly ways and turn our lives to God. 'No one knows the time, except our Father who is in Heaven' Therefore, I think 2012 is going to be pretty okay.
Also – as far as God giving us fair warning '...In those days they will be saying "Peace, Peace." ... they will be drinking and making merry." doesn't sound like that's happening right now. No peace and except for Spring Break in Florida not too much making merry.

And as far as earthquakes – less than normal. Although there are 'wars and rumors of wars.' Really, it depends on where you read. Eventually, it'll make sense, but by then – time will bre up for us to make a choice.

Amen. He foretold us that before 7 years of tribulation there would be earthquakes in various places. After 7 years of tribulation is His second coming.

Let's hope that there is very little damage and no loss of lives. Too many earthquakes very close in time and at different parts of the ring of fire. Mother nature is not happy with us.

There have been earthquakes in my area (Ohio valley) recently too. But of course CNN doesn't wanna cover them bc they were a 2.3 and a 3.4.
