Are you kidding me? WHY BLAME THE MEDIA? It's not the Media's responsibility to PARENT your child! How about blaming the PARENTS for not watching their children better, keeping guns out of their hands, and raising them to know that this kind of stuff is wrong?! It's the media's fault the PARENTS failed at ensuring a SAFE and loving environment for their own flesh and blood!!!!

a parent called that school this morning before the shooting to report a student snorting cocaine in class. admin told him the student was taking ritalin. you do not snort ritalin. you have to go to the clinic to take any meds. there are alot of problems at this school other than the shooting. something needs done there

I live a street over from the kid that was shot. The school system has problems and has for at least 20 years. Every year in the last 20 years at least one student a year has commited suicide. It seems like budgets are constantly being cut and our school system pays the price...Every Year. There are soo many issues here. Parents should have been better parents, teachers should have been better teachers, friends should have been better friends. One person felt they had no way to let out their feelings, so he took matters in his own hands. Children need a place to go, communities need to step up, because this will not stop and next time it could be in your town as it was in mine. Lets stop attacking each other and work together.

What was a 15 yr old doing with a gun? Just proves my point about the parents. Such a sad tragedy that could have been prevented. My condolences to the family of the child that was shot.

@Mad Mom: So you're ok with charging parents then? Some parents don't care and the parents that do care are raising sheep for the wolves that raise themselves. I'm not blaming media 100% but I'm sorry to say it does hurt the cause. Repeated violent images or thoughts pumped into a child's brain nearly 24/7 will influence their behavior. When confronted with a problem their brain will consider violence. You can walk through any school or mall and see kids that want to dress like their favorite musician, so to say they are not being influenced is naive. Maybe not all kids will commit acts of violence, but I'm sure it contributes. The argument that not everyone becomes violent from the use of violent media is a cop out. At the very least it increases the frequency. When white suburban kids stop dressing and talking like their favorite druggy or thug entertainer then I will accept that they are not influenced by media.

@MadMom: How do you know the victim wasn't tormenting the shooter everyday of his life? Maybe the sheep decided he had enough of the wolf?

I think all of this is crazy and I am a graduate of martinsville hs in 1993. I also noticed when I googled this incident I also found there was a gun abnd knife show in martinsville on march 17 and kids got in free. So I wonder how a kid got a gun, duh!! All I have to say is I am glad I live in florida with my two boys now! Everyone should pray and keep on praying until God answers cause obviously the devil has come to stay in martinsville. When I lived there the devil stayed in the woods but I guess his grasp has finally reached the children there as well.

      Amy,
Get real. I know Martinsville has a bad reputation, but I am sure the school system isn't to blame for your narrow minded thoughts. This could happen anywhere, even in Florida at a school near you. The devil is everywhere, not just in martinsville. Also, just because there was a gun and knife show a week before 'where kids get in free' doesn't equal teen violence with guns. Kmart sells guns and knives, Walmart sells knives, pawn shops everywhere have guns and knives and all kids are allowed in there, for FREE....so, try to think your comments thru a little before posting prejudiced opinions of a really good community and small town with some flaws - just like your community, Im sure.

amy, a 15 year old could not buy a gun at a gun show even if he wanted to. duh! have you ever been to a gun show or know whats involved in a gun purchase? apparently not since you think kids could get a gun that way.

Woah, buddy. Watch yourself. Ever think it was the American culture that was the problem? Not the people?

Wow so much I could say about this comment to make you look foolish and uneducated , but I'll just say this instead: This happened in Martinsville, IN. Theres about a 99% chance the shooter is white. Just saying.

Conservatives like you makes conservatives like me look bad. There are subcultures and you need to learn to accept that they help make up the uniform culture of this country.
