CIA 'gathering intel firsthand' in Libya, source says

The CIA is operating in Libya to help the United States increase its "military and political understanding" of the situation, a U.S. intelligence source said.

"But yes, we are gathering intel firsthand and we are in contact with some opposition entities," the source told CNN.

The White House refused to comment on a Reuters report Wednesday that President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel troops.

"I will reiterate what the President said yesterday - no decision has been made about providing arms to the opposition or to any group in Libya," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. "We're not ruling it out or ruling it in. We're assessing and reviewing options for all types of assistance that we could provide to the Libyan people, and have consulted directly with the opposition and our international partners about these matters."

Daaah, everybody and their Grandmother knows that CIA don't count as troops. That's how the game has been played from hundreds of years. Like someone else said the CIA is every country. And the President would be negligent if he didn't put in more spies in their. Someone has to help with targeting. I'm sure the Russians and Chinese have people there too.
These stories are like waking up in the morning and announcing the Sun rose today. They are for the benefit of the nutty left who think we should have no CIA.

The CIA and it's predecessor the OSS have had their "boots on the ground" of every operation like this since WWII. This shouldn't be a shock to anyone. Undoubtedly, they are assisting with the airstrikes and providing intelligence to the rebels on the ground. There is still no guarantee that this covert effort, or the airpower it guides, will be decisive. History is on Gaddafi's side...unless the rebels get external logistic support...including arms.

@Charles: So you like how Bush ordered the CIA and special forces not to pursue Bin Laden when they had him cornered prior to the Afghanistan invasion? That was a huge fail as was the botched initial start to the Iraq war.

Ha! the news talks about CIA in Lybia? I am not surprised about the CIA involvement in Libya. Since the CIA creation in 1947 and reformed under Bush in 2004, the CIA is well established in the Middle East countries to conduct strategic duties far beyond people understanding, in the name of democracy. universally there is no accepted definition of democracy, other then equality and freedom which have been identified as important characteristics of democracy since ancient times. Therefore the belief in democracy needs to be fed all the time or it will not survive, the Middle East is the perfect place to spread democracy, the counrty is rich in oil and the people are under oppression, they are aggressive to conduct cues against theirs dictatorship governments. Unlike China where people are fearful.

Americans should be in the streets and at the doors of the capital white house and all places of government revolting the way the people of the middle east are. We have record unemployment ,foreclosures of homes jobs that are never comming back and the cia in libyia is news!wake up america ! What about the american people can the un pass a resolution sending someone to help us ? We need it

Luke I hear you, we Americans are overworked, unhealthy and overweight , underpaid, uninsured, pay stupid property tax, and for what!! our public schools are of third world country and even those are better then ours and last but not list in debt to our eye balls to just work and pay bills, people have spent their whole life in this cycle, its called economic slavery. Our Government and the new administration is not investing in its people, in Education, healthcare, and home values, including the preservation for generations of the American family home. The asset of a Nation are its people, if I was the president I would reform everything down to a toothpick. Our Government is out of control with spending, and aboard warfare.

Greg...not to disappoint you somewhat, but the CIA is a well established agency in the US and globally, with ties and carry out activities to groups that would blow anyone’s mind. There are agents living in all locations here and abroad, I have one living next to me a few houses away, and for what I don’t know! Its a quite upper middle class community.. no terrorism here, but the agent is stationed here, perhaps is because a few houses away lives a diplomat?, so the agents keep an eye on it? One thing is for sure these CIA agents are scattered all over the f...place. The CIA presence is also a matter National security, among their duties are, to provide communication and support, strategy and tactics, to neutralize any anti-government cues and to protect our democracy thank GOD for that. The CIA has a brutal dark side too, and has been carrying out intelligence activities since George Washington all over the world.
