2 killed in F/A-18 crash in California

[Updated at 7:46 p.m. ET] Two crew members on a routine training flight were killed Wednesday when an F/A-18F aircraft crashed near Naval Air Station Lemoore in central California, the U.S. Navy said.

Capt. James Knapp, commanding officer of the station, told reporters the plane, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 122, crashed at 12:08 p.m. PT (3:08 p.m. ET) in a private farm field about one half mile west of the property line.

The crash of the two-seat strike fighter, which occurred southwest of Fresno, is under investigation, Knapp said.

The names of the Super Hornet crew, a pilot and weapons system operator, were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

I can't believe the sheer ignorance of the people on this post. Why does everything that happens in the world have to be some sort of conspiracy! I live on NAS Lemoore and if you see the way these jets fly it looks like it would be VERY easy for one to crash. The pilots here constantly do flight drills, and yes, if you have ever seen an F-18 it holds 2 people. So, to everyone who has absolutly NO idea what they are talking about and to all the disrespectful jerks making sick jokes out of 2 citizens dying, get a life and be thankful you can sit on your butt and attribute nothing to this country.

The issues are so much deeper than that, and many don't realize the role the play in the machine until it's too late. What these people do, they do for the good of the nation. Yes, bad things happen. The US gov has done some messed up stuff with our military, and intelligence, but these people are the tools of the trade, not policy makers. If they didn't do their job, this country would fall to whatever oppresor came along and wanted our resources and infrastructure for their own. Bless the troops, watch government, watch big business, and the industrial military complex. Just don't forget who is going to be there to save your butt when some knucklehead tries to roll tanks on American Soil or Fly bombers over your city.

What do you mean they stopped being citizens when they put on their uniform? They did not give up their citizenship when they enterred the military. Did you mean they stopped being civilians?

I think you left your head in your azz. Every loss to the complex, means more to build...more money. Your insensitivity to the crew is understandable since you are obviously very immature – you don't understand that those people provide the deterrence which makes your worthless life comfortable and threat-free. Also, we are all aware of the spiral of the military-industrial complex. Get rid of it and you get rid of hundreds of thousands of jobs. We couldn't afford the unemployment, welfare etc. It is what the US does! BTW...did I tell you you are an azz?

    Hey CNN,

Nice job on the photo. You show a New Zealand Hornet even though the accident involved a US aircraft and a US crew. AND there are plenty more photos of US aircraft. What are you people thinking? It's not a sacrilege or anything like that, just lazy photo editing.

I am working right now on the base where this has happened and am really at a loss for words that people are joking about this article. If you were here and see the cars outside of the homes where these men have families and think about what really is happening it may be different. Or not depending on what I see being written here. There really isn't respect for anything left is there? I'm ashamed to see this and wish I hadn't opened up this to see. God be with the men and their families.

First of all, its not a WMD, you freakin idiot! Second of all there is no way you are an American. If you are you would have had a foot up your ass if you had said that in front of me. Two people died. Our people! And lastly, if you are an American, you would know that your tax dollars paid for that airplane, unless you don't pay taxes, which you probably don't because you're too busy making stupi ass comments on the CNN articles you know nothing about!

chelsea. (lower case 'c' and period at end) ... ... You are the type of gutless asz that's real tough and clever with words streaming off of your keyboard. Why don't you go around some American citizens who really do, or will do (if needed) something for the privileges they have as citizens. Talk your krap to them! Or, go join up and serve (you really haven't the spine though.)
