Croatian generals convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity

The International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia announced Friday that it had convicted two Croatian generals of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Ante Gotovina, who commanded Croatia's Split military district during the mid-1990s war that led to the disintegration of Yugoslavia, was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Mladen Markac, who headed the Interior Ministry's Special Police, received an 18-year prison term.

A third general, Ivan Cermak, was acquitted of all charges and ordered released as soon as possible.

Gotovina and Markac participated in an ethnic cleansing operation in Croatia's Krajina region between July and September 1995, the court found. Under the leadership of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, the generals and others attempted to clear the Krajina of ethnic Serbs and repopulate it with Croats, the court said.

Tudjman, who died in 1999, never was officially charged with any crime.

The trial in The Hague, Netherlands, started in March 2008 and involved 145 witnesses and 4,819 evidence exhibits, the court said.

The verdict was greeted by boos and hisses from crowds gathered in the central square of Croatia's capital, Zagreb, the BBC reported. The generals are regarded by some as national heroes.

i think this verdict is a political motivated , the moment croatia was recognised as an independent state it was legally alloud to defend it self , its sounds like europe doesnt want the balkan countries to enter eu on their own instead you get rid of their leaders and push them into a balkan association, remember hitlers words on the poles we will make them dumt enogh to read the road signs so they dont get hit by our cars, you send a great message to people who are attacked its ok to be invaded its ok to be bombed its ok to be murded and if you defend yourself you go to jail, two airoplanes led to two wars, 900 000 projectiles hit vukovar defend yourself and you go to jail ,to the people of congo put down your weopons and let your enemy kill you , this is a terrible day for freedom , and since the wars in iraq and afganistan are being fort over this principle you too should forget your victims and stop the war, this spits on the memory of the victims, like the croatian soldier who dug up a garden to find his familiy in it , or do we accept this , and say this is gods will .

intervju : Stipe Mesic, rijecki "NOVI LIST", 21 april 2011:

Nice going there Michael, Croatian army entered on 9th and those unfortunate people were killed on 8th,most likely is that your great Serbian heroes killed them so they wouldn't fall into hands of "evil Croats".
This is how Serbs treated Croatian population in 1991 when they were sure they would win the war:

we were all pawns in a political game of chess. born to hate our neighbors, but once upon a time we were all brothers. wish everyone could let it all rest and move forward for the sake our children and for a better future.
