Overheard on CNN.com: Arizona 'birther bill' about racism?

Exchange of the Day: "All Obama has to do to make this all go away is produce a birth certificate. It shouldn't be that tough. Why hasn't he?"– TRoublerunt

"The Health Department of the State of Hawaii (and then Republican governor) certified that he was born there. What exactly do you want as proof? The long-form birth certificate that Hawaii and several other states don't issue?"– LivinginVA

Arizona passes bill that makes presidential hopefuls prove citizenship

Federal law requires that presidential candidates be natural-born American citizens. For Arizona legislators, however, this is not enough. They have passed a bill requiring that all presidential candidates including President Obama prove their citizenship before they are placed on that state's ballot. The measure has not yet been signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican. Many CNN.com readers said the bill was really about racism.

Suhgarim said, "The only politician I've ever seen proof of being born in the US is Barack Obama; perhaps we should kick all the others out until they can prove where they were born. I am white and I am sick, sick, sick of this racism! Because that's just what it is. I've never seen a white candidate go through this. A plague and a curse on America for our stupidity! And a double plague and curse on conservatives and Republicans!"

kathyrants said, "In my entire lifetime, I have never known of a president who had to go through so much just to prove he is eligible for the presidency. I have also not seen so much disrespect for the president. Let's get with it America. Let's worry about more important things. Let our President do what he needs to do to get us back on track. I too am white and very tired of hearing about this. He is black; he is the president, so shut up, sit down and have another beer!"

Some readers questioned the use of taxpayer money to push the bill. Ghurst said, "So why did Carl Seel introduce a bill for a law that already exists? As a public servant, shouldn't he be mindful of how he spends his time and the people's money? If my boss caught me wasting my time and his money on something that is not needed, I would get fired."

BigOtto said, "We have truly become the laughing stock of the world."

Muslim beauty contestant faces critics on all sides, she says

Model Shanna Bukhari hopes to win the British Miss Universe contest this year and represent Britain at the international contest. Her presence in the beauty contest has upset all kinds of people: among them, some Muslims who think she is not religious enough and some U.K. citizens who think she shouldn't be allowed to represent a "white" country.

The story had some CNN.com readers discussing how Islam views women.  Alberto said, "As a Muslim, I say to Shanna: All the power to you, girl! Go for it. Don't let the idiots get to you. You are beautiful, created by the same God that has created this universe. There is no place for religious zealots to have a say in what you're doing, only you and your heart.”

fgf said, "Ignore these stupid people, Shanna. I'm a Muslim girl do whatever you want. Those laws to cover up had cultural relevance in Saudi Arabia 1400+ years ago. They don’t apply today."

Husain said, "Allah did not want women to be our equals. Women are inherently inferior and subservient to men. They must be covered to keep them from entering into sin and causing a man to do so. They are put here to bring forth children and give pleasure to their husbands."

Billy Ryan replied, "Husain, You must come into the light. Women are equals in every way, Don't be left behind in another century, Join ours. It's much better."

KBaus said, "Husain, what does the Quran say about family and the mother? Does it say that family is at the feet of the mother? Does not it say to treat your mother with the highest respect? Saying that women are inherently inferior clearly states that your mother is inferior to you. That is not what Quran say. How is it that Jesus is one of the four most important prophets of Islam yet he taught peace and love, not hate and inequality? Are you a true Muslim or one who hijacks Islam for its own evil purpose?"

BiH said, "Dear Husain, as a Muslim women, I have the privilege to believe and practice the religion of Islam. I support the young lady; she is proving that women in Islam are equal to any other women in other religions. Now is the time for Muslim men to start respecting your sisters, wife, daughters. How many Muslim women are suffering because of the egoism of man? Don’t anyone dare to judge the women; we will all one day be standing in front of our creator, Inshallah."

'All My Children,' 'One Life to Live' canceled

For more than 40 years, TV viewers have been able to tune in to the much-loved life stories portrayed on "All My Children" and "One Life to Live." By January 2012 those stories will end, ABC announced, to be replaced with shows about food and lifestyle.

Many CNN.com readers shared how tuning in to those shows powerfully linked them to memories of loved ones. Kelly said, "I grew up watching 'All My Children' with my grandmother. I still watch till this day and I'm also hooked on OLTL and GH. These shows are as American as apple pie."

Tamzilla said, "One of my fondest memories is watching AMC with my mom over dinner! I bought my first VCR just to record AMC. Now that I'm disabled I DVR them both everyday. If they do away with both these I will never watch ABC again!"

Jerbear said, "This is a sad day. I am a 35-year old male (not gay) who watched OLTL/General Hospital religiously when I was young every day with my grandma. I became hooked. I still tune in if I have the chance, just for the nostalgia."

Others explained how the shows relieved the stress in their own lives and swore they would turn off ABC forever.  Sherry said, "Everyday I drive home for lunch just so I can watch 'All My Children,' and have had this same routine for the past 11 years. At least for an hour a day I was able to get lost in somebody else's world and leave my problems behind. I definitely will not be watching a food reality show. ABC has lost this viewer."

But others said the soaps had lived past their prime. When Andagain said, "Oh no! I stopped watching AMC 25 years ago when I had to go to work. Whatever happened to Erica Kane?!!" John replied, "You're wondering why they're canceling these shows? For one, even you stopped watching a quarter-century ago."

Racism????It is getting so old that any pushback to a black person is considered racism. George Bush got blasted daily for everything. I guess that was ok. Say anything about this President and you are called a racist. From what we are told he is also white. Color should not be part of any discusion. President Obama is perhaps the worst President in US history and is hiding many things. White, Black, yellow or whatever, he still would be viewed as a fraud.

If you're injecting racism into the fact that Obama has never validated his citizenship let alone his eligibility to be President of the United States then the only logical conclusion about you is that you're a far-left Liberal kook.

This (version) would not satisfy many state governments i believe. California for example, if I'm not mistaken, has both versions, but you have to supply the long form goverment identification purposes. I think this is alot less about racism, and more about his background, especially in light of his father's political views and nationality, and Obama's church and community efforts.

While some of the birthers are driven by racism, I don't believe that the mojoirty of them are. I think it is just one way to attack the opposite political party, and as we see on a daily basis, one side will attack the other on just about any basis and it is politically driven. If a Dem says the sky is blue, the GOP will say untrue, it is yellow and visa versa.

Its so pitiful that so many buy into this absurdness. I have lost friends over this, because I can only wonder at what their naivety would lead to when we might be out together. These are the same type of people who would agree with the random strange liar in order to save their skin and sell you down the river. I can't even respond to them once I learn they participate in this crap. For me its like discovering their white pointy cap and robe while mistakenly opening the closet instead of the 1/2 bath door. Just excuse yourself and bow out... Whats more is that they feel threatened, even while they insist that they know better than any authority, they arm themselves with a doze fully automatics in townships where there are no blacks or minorities. Its simply amazing. Whats worse is there is absolutely nothing that would satisfy them at this point as they are delusional now. They insist that every form of authority has been corrupted toward this imagined scam. They refuse to submit and refer to him as a President, but rather names and candidate etc. Eventually they will speak their hearts truth and say nig , ger , nig , ger , nig , ger and perhaps that may defuse some of it. But the truth is they will just claim their right. Arizona (and many others) didn't want MLK day 20 years ago, doesn't want Mexicans legal or otherwise, doesn't want Obama as president, doesn't want proof, just abandonment of the Federal Government. We are suppose to be creative as americans and always find a way to accomplish the difficult, but a non white president seems to have broken that for the so called majority.

I find this issue very troubling for race relations in our country and to those who claim this legislation is done in "good faith" I say you are wrong. This is another slap in the face against the fight of racism in America, one small quote and then you can say whatever " A house divided cannot stand, America divided will not stand. Thank you

Since CNN knows all the answers I want CNN to answer one question. What was the name of the hospital Barack Obama was born in?

I wouldn't think it was racist. If he was white with a heavy French accent you can be certain that there'd be a bigger outcry in the same situation.

Looks exactly like my birth certificate from 1976, just different state seal and state name, Anyone who has a problem with that certificate, especially since it has been certified by multiple sources is either legitimately insane, or just plain stupid.

The proof provided is already the accepted standard. Tonight's CNN interview showed that the man proposing the bill chooses which Internet "rumours" he accepts as 'fact', unsubstantiated or not.

On an unrelated note, as a white man taught by my father that all men are indeed created equal but some decide to still choose to act like morons, I really preferred it when racists wore their bedsheets, at least it made them look as stupid and cowardly as they act.

More hypocrisy for the Republican party. It is their party that has made the most effort to change the law about citizenship. They most recently made noise about trying to get it changed so that Arnold Schwarzennegger would be eligible when he shot to stardom as the governor. Same way in the past with Henry Kissinger. Republican Orrin Hatch is the chief proponent of the change. Yep, it's the same gang of hypocrites who trash Hollywood and praise actors Ronald Reagan and Arnold. They even had actor Fred Thompson in the running for president.

Trump resurrected this issue thinking this would get him brownie points with the GOP. This is backfiring right in his face! as it should! Shame on Trump.......since he has so much money he said he has an investigator in Hawaii to get more info on this.
Don't you think that money would be best used to help the less fortunate? There are more pressing issues, that we as a Nation have, and are more important than wasting time, money, and news about our President showing a birth certificate which he already did! Call it a birth certificate or certificate of live birth is the same!!!!!!!!! I was born in Chicago and my certificate is also a short form called Certificate of live Birth.
Trump >>>> drop the issue- you will be left with a brown nose and no help from the GOP on this one.
And to the News Reporters EVERYWHERE.......I ask why are you even reporting this bull?............where is your self respect?
Where is the report of the millions of people in the USA outraged at the Republicans for wanting to eliminate Medicare- Medicaid, change Social Security and tell those families with special needs children and those with disabilities "you're on your own" ! Where are the reporters in the cities and towns where people are gathering against the Republicans?
Now that, is news worthy. Don't waste time on an idiot with a horrible comb over like Trump. or you can send him to the windy city of Chicago.......I'd love to get a picture of that comb over flying south!! Now that can be news.

I wonder if John MCcain was President would there be a Birther Movement? John MCcain was born in the Panama Canal Zone don't really believe there would be, so in my humble observation with regard to this issue, yes it's a racism at it highest mode and all who support it are nothing but plain racist lowlifes that have nothing better to do with their idiotic lives lol.

McCain was 100% not born on US soil, or US territory in any way. He was born off base in Colon. However he probably still is natural born citizen because in law it means born a citizen. It isn't born to 2 Americans in America or born to parents without dual citizenship or born to military parents. Either you were born American or you are naturalized later. There isn't any special 3rd kind to be President.
