Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

Watch an iReporter's response

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

I wonder if the PRESS caught the message from Obama that they, The PRESS are just as guilty of promoting the birther issue as Trump, and all those other crazies. It's time the PRESS (Yes, that means CNN, MSNBC, etc) stop salavating over the controversial issues and start acting like legitimate news people. I 'm betting a polling of how people view the meaningfulness of the PRESS, would show ratings ever bit as bad (or worse) as those of the House and Senate!

@DwayneL, History will write a very different picture than it appears you like to paint with your deluded brush. The worst President in our history was selected by the Supreme Court and his VP and history will bear out that he was the most corrupt person to ever hold that office. Whether you want to believe it or not, the majority want President Obama to do a good job, which translates into an improved America. Did your mama forget to teach you that when you've dug yourself into a hole way deeper than the height of a ladder, IF you had a ladder, it's gonna take a long time to climb out of that hole.

The funniest part of all of this is that Donald Trump, a man who has filed for bankruptcy numerous times, run many many companies into the ground, now wants to do the same with our country.

Go back to reality TV Mr. Trump. There is no place for a man with no credibility in politics.

Totally agree! Trump should think before he opens his big mouth and shows such disrespect! Obama walked into a mess made by 8 years of George W.!! That can't be fixed overnight and if Trump thinks he can fix it, then he's delusional – this is not a TV show Donald – save the boardroom dramatics for television!

The whole "birther" thing is really stupid. Dislike him all you want, but the bottom line is, he's not going anywhere. It wouldn't matter if it were proved Obama wasn't born in the U.S. at this point...it's too late, he's already in office and he will NEVER be removed from office no matter what. Will not happen. He could stand on the White House lawn, spit on the flag, say he hates the US and he will still be President. Releasing the certificate will never convince the people who believe he wasn't born here because they'll say it was a forgery blah blah blah but it doesn't matter...he's not going anywhere. So get over it and focus on something that matters.

It would be good if Obama would focus on something that matters instead of doing whatever he can do to promote social agenda that will transfer trillions more to the people that view personal responsibility as an unconfirmed rumor.

What's sad is that Obama now calls all of this garbage for the last two years "Silliness" but he was the sole person who could've ended it before it began. I believe he's a birth citizen, but for him to spin this as if he's above the fray and ending the issue once and for all, is ludicrous. He's the one who let it go on for so long.

I'm not above thinking that he did it simply to one-up the republicans. He delayed the disclosure for political gain, yet chastises his adversaries. Wonderful. Just Wonderful.

Bertina – Why not try to respond with an intelligent answer? If this is SO distracting now why wasn't just as distracting during the health care debate? If anything the furor over this entire nonsense is less now than it was 2 years ago and apparently all it took was a simple letter from his lawyer and one paragraph from him to end this issue once and for all.

"He's the one who let it go so long". Seems to me that he released a birth certificate 2 years ago and that was the end of it for him. It's the birther movement who has kept this going all this time with their resistance to accepting him as the President. He hasn't been the one constantly on Fox news fanning the flames about it.

shirl – if your customers are talking about a rumor that affects your ability to do your job to the best of your ability, do you blame your customers or do you deal with their concerns and eliminate them as quickly as possible? The birthers and the media kept this story alive for over 2 years and the President, his staff, and various congress people wasted countless hours and days of their time dealing with this. What would have been best all around? End the debate early or let them continue wasting your time?

@JJ – I don't agree with the comparison, but I also don't feel that the issue weighed on him to the extent that he couldn't do his job. I'm not sure what you have expected from him these past two years, but on top of the "inherited nightmare", he has been up against one crisis after another. Oil spills, tsunamis, middle east rebellion one country after the other. I don't feel that the onus was on him to produce this. It was on the people to accept the birth certificate he had provided 2 years ago and let it go. Even after the release today, there are still unsatisfied people saying it's been photoshopped. What does he have to produce the next time?

I'm a birther nut-job, and I'm very happy Obama has finally ended the charade. Now I want to see his college transcripts, and to be fair I want to see Trump's financial information if he decides to run for president. We finally got some transparency out of this president but it took us "birther nut-jobs" to get him to do it. It's time for change yet again. We had a bad 8 years of Bush and a worse 2 years of Obama. Time to fire all these political hacks.

Did you ask for Bush's military records or transcripts? Are you asking for Romney's? Palin's? Huckabee's? There is a real and very dangerous double standard being applied here, and you should ask yourself why.

I respect your right to be a birther nut job (not even sure I knew that was something someone could be classified as).

The real problem with Washington is that people think it is somehow the solution. It is the problem and rolling new idiots in out every two years is not the solution.

As long as the fastest growing percentage of the country has its hands out and fewer and fewer taxpayers are around to support them, the country will continue its inevitable decline.

Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country........

Members of congress and the White House pander to groups to gain funding for their campaigns which provide them with very fat wallets and lots of power and in the mean time, some of the population is doing its absolute best to get America looking like a third world country as quickly as possible.

Self responsibility has been the backbone of America since it began but now it is a nanny state where more and more people think it is the government that is responsible for its happiness and prosperity.

Why...just ask YOURSELF why YOU think he needs to do this. It wasn't the FEDS asking or CIA. Just everyday normal mostly white Americans. They had a problem with it. How hard would it have been to squash this by writing his one paragraph letter and having his lawyer write the one page letter they just used and thus silence the cries of forgery? Since he considers this such a distraction for himself and the American people then he should have eliminated that distraction as quickly as possible, that is leadership. If there are questions that are detracting from your goals and your work you do what needs to be done to address them so they no longer are a distraction.
