Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

I am glad that President Obama released this certificate.. I am, however, ashamed that he was forced to do so by an idiot blowhard who has grandstanded in public in order to promote his "brand." You know, the brand that parades bikini clad bimbos in pageants and has-been, emotionally damaged "celebrities" on his asinine program. Barak Obama is the duly elected President of The United States and I am grateful for his service. Trump has not served our country well with his self serving antics and I am horrified that any American supports his interest in the presidency.

The profound ignorance of the "birthers" is embarrassing. This is yet another example of how the nation pays daily for our lack of commitment to high-quality education. Donald Trump is a shameless publicity hound but the media encourages him and the rest of the "birthers' by covering this absurd story when the nation and world have serious problems which need the focus of serious people.

Says he doesn't have time for this silliness yet despite the country going broke, 3 wars, and raging inflation, he has plenty of time for the silliness of talk shows and fund raising. If he did anything worthwhile as president, he wouldn't even have to campaign.

Obama has not fixed anything, stop deluding yourself into thinking that he has done anything at all other than to show a complete lack of leadership and focus on things that are not important to the majority of the country.

Birther nut job here again. Oh, wait, add racist to the label because that's all progressive people can do which is name call and then they claim to have a handle on the issues. Anyway, explain to me in a rational way how your president plans on reducing the debt, and eliminating deficit spending? Explain without name calling and the usual mud slinging. Thank you

This has never been about place of birth but rather about the president of the United States being fathered by an African man. Racists in the Unitee States will never accept this.

If Obama had provided this in the very beginning, there never would have been any controversy. It's pretty easy to prove that you were born in the USA...why the wait? It's an attention getting device and an obvious political ploy on Obama's part.

It was provided when he applied to run. Where were you in asking for John McCain's birth certificate? He was born in Panama.

And yet Trump just cant say he was wrong. Instead he declared victory. However, he has now raised questions about its authenticity. I can see it now. Those that questioned it in the first place will now claim forgery, conspiracy and a coverup.

President Barack works for the American people and if we want to see his B/C then he should show it...it's not about being black or the 1st Black President...it's about America and where we are headed as a Nation. Everyone that uses that race card should be ashamed, because we don't care about color anymore we care about people! It's people that use the race card that hurt Mr. Obama not the other way around...so get off your high horse and let the past be the past. We need to love each other and help each other – it's the only way !!! So be an adult and teach your kids that color is just that color and people need to be treated with respect even President Barack.

Why?.....If everything is not about race anymore. Why did HE need to show HIS? He did everything the FBI, CIA all vetting procedures and everthing. Why did he need to do it? The first Bi-Racial President needs to go that extra mile......why? He wasn't even being treated like a person. his mother was being talked about like he wan't even deserving of citizenship. Why? If we dont see color ANYMORE.....(God I wish).......why did he have to go that extra mile. Just so he could be legitamate? Why?

Glad he produced his birth certificate, no real reason too, but he needs to explain how he has a Conn. Social Security number since he was born in Hawaii. More crap from the head pile of crap.

Social Security numbers aren't necessarily issued at birth. They are issued at the time someone applies for a Social Security number, based on the state of residence, not the birth state.

It is disgraceful that our President is required to show his original birth certificate. He took the high road to stop the silliness perpetuated by the perpetually annoying such as Donald Trump. While i don't agree with everything he's done, he's a great improvement over his predecessor. Up yours, Tea Party & birthers!
