Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

Watch an iReporter's response

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

If the President had really been interested in putting this issue to rest, he would have produced this 2 years ago. However, I think he's intentionally kept the issue alive (by NOT producing this till now) to encourage some opponents to take a "fringe" position.

Obama was not under any obligation to produce anything to anybody 2 years ago. He should never have been forced to produce his birth certificate. He is a citizen who rightfully won the presidency two years ago.

There are already comments coming out questioning this version of the birth certificate. It will never go away entirely. Some folks still think Bush caused 911. Trump wanted attention and got it. He overlooks that's what Sarah Palin wanted. If Trump can't get his head around the birther issue, imagine how much trouble he'd have as a real president with real problems. As rove said, Trump is a like candidate like Pailn.

Would be a great theory, except for the fact that he DID produce his legal bc during the campaign. AND the CIA and FBI Fully vetted and verified his eligibility when he declared his candidacy. Here's a conspiracy theory for you, Why didn't the CIA and FBI "OUT' him as an alien back then? Answer: because there was no news there.

    1. Yes, it's a birth certificate. It's the fabled "long form" the birthers have been squealing about for almost three years.

    2. No, the President and First Lady did NOT "admit" that the President was born in Hawaii. They have both repeatedly and consistently said that he was born in Hawaii.

    3. You are wrong. Admit it and get on with your life.

Elid, NO it is NOT the long form which is issued by the hospital. This GREEN form is the short form issued by the state of Hawaii. CNN is either sloppy in it's terminology, or deliberately misleading to call the state-issued GREEN form a "long" form.
BTW, the hospital AS NAMED on this green form didnt exist until the merger of 2 separate hospitals:
1890 –Queen Kapiolani founded Kapilani Maternity Home.
      1909 – Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital opened.
1978 – Kauikeolani Children’s hospital merged with Kapiolani Maternity Home to become (ta-dah) Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children
All the above is in wiikipedia! And indeed begs the question of a 1961 BC showing a hospital name not in existence until 1978..;17 yrs after BHO's birth !!!.

to Diane, Mr Scott, Goldenchic, Stupidpeopleannoy me and all other liberal apologist for all things Obama (notice, i have not used one insulting word) - actually, here's the SAME stats from the hospital's website

"This is the story of two hospitals: Kauikeolani Children's Hospital and Kapi‘olani Maternity Home.
Concerned about the welfare of Hawaii's mothers, Queen Kapi‘olani held luau and bazaars to raise the $8,000 needed to open Kapi‘olani Maternity Home in 1890. She endowed her legacy with “Kulia i ka nu‘u” or “Strive for the highest.”

In 1908, Albert and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox donated $50,000 to start a children's hospital. The community, concerned that two of every seven infants in Hawai‘i did not live to see their first birthday, rallied to match the Wilcox's gift. A year later, Kauikeolani Children's Hospital opened.

"The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children."

Go outside a take a deep breath-then see a shrink and find out what is eating you inside–your childhood not so good back in the trailer? get to the bottom of it...maybe then your hatred and racism will dissipate and you will then live a long life full of peace instead of hatred. really try it.

Muggsy3: YOU put Wikipedia as your source. Do you realize that a Wiki page can be updated by anyone in the public which means some nutcase may have put that up there to get you all rattled up. If you want "facts" go to a public Library or look for government issued proof that this "hospital" did not exist before you go off on some tangent 🙂

HUH?? Muggsy3 you don't make any sense. Did you even look at the birth certificate? It doesn't sound like it because none of the hospitals you mentioned are named on his birth certificate. Long form, short form. Good grief. Do a little research other than Wiki. That is not a credible encyclopedia. In the state I live in, if you need an official copy of you birth certificate, you get a photo copy with a state seal and signature just like what was shown by the President today. We don't keep our records consolidated in the computer and print shortened forms as copies (yet) but some states do. You know it is ignorant people like yourself that cause all this uproar. Get your facts straight and have valid proof to back them up before you spit out garbage like this.

He's a well known crank, vexatious litigator, and 9/11 Truther, and his efforts have not been supported by Secretary Clinton or anyone associated with her.

What is supposed to make him an American is the ability as the Commander and Chief to prevent foreign governments from interfering with American military honors. This birth certificate issue is a red herring and a distraction from the real issue, the elephant in the room if you will, and that is the failure to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Americans of Armenian heritage who fought in WWI, WWII and Korean conflict where highly disrespected by this president on the Holiest Easter Sundays in Armenian History. Truly sad and hurtful.

We are not falling for this birth certificate issue as a distraction. We are more concerned about who made who. Ask yourselves, who made the Devil and who made you. "We wont get fooled again...." [The Who]

"What is supposed to make him an American is the ability as the Commander and Chief to prevent foreign governments from interfering with American military honors?" Where in the world could you have gotten such a silly idea?

So everyone who is can not effectively use their powers as Commander and Chief to control foreign governments is not an American? So there have been, at most, 44 Americans? And how many of them, from Washington to Obama, have been able to control foreign powers?

There is making a point, and then there is making a fool out of yourself!

Dear Birthers and Mr. Trump: Sorry it took so long to show my long form birth certificate, but I was busy with important stuff like being president. I had it tucked away in my top left desk drawer. I would have shown it earlier, but I was certain that you would get tired of the issue. After a while, it became amusing to watch you foam at the mouth about it. I admit, it was fun playing you like a song but now it's old and I'm over it. So suck it. Sincerly, President Barack Obama

I am disgusted with the lack of respect shown to a sitting U.S. President. Nothing the Obamas can do will please these wingnuts. Michelle Obama tries to increase awareness in parents of the perils of child obesity and they call her a socialist. Even now, they will cry out forgery or that doesn't prove he isn't a Muslim. Last time I checked by the way, you aren't disqualified for President based upon your religion or the lack thereof. The birthers couldn't even offer a shred of evidence that he was born in Kenya or wherever these nutjobs suggested he was born (probably because of the proof previously offered and now officially offered). Having proven his birth, now Trump tries to take the credit while other Rethuglicans that by displaying his birth certificate as they demanded Obama is guilty of distracting from jobs and the economy when they started this crap. It is truly pathetic.
