Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

Is Donald's hair real????? What about all the bankruptcies that Trump has had? Would Trump have gone after Obama if he was white?
Trump should go to Alaska with Palin – they belong together?
Why doesn't care about the economy??

Let me think...most of birthers are white, they did not care about McCain being born outside the US, they grew up in 50s 60s thinking that black don't have rights, they don't like change because they are old, and they hate non-whites having power). What is a good excuse to hide racism?

Different states have different laws on mixed births. If he had been born in Georgia his race would be caucasian.

President Obama is your president, get over it, man! It's hard to comprehand that how a normal human being can be a bully of himself. You're pooping through your mouth, the more you do that, the more you lose credibility, but of course, there are people out there cheering for you and they might elect you for president, and i'm telling you man, that is the right time to sing, the song "American idiot"

It truly amazes me that people on here are whining and asking why it took 2 years for him to provide his birth certificate? What other President has had to prove he is an American? This is asinine. And as far as I'm concerned he shouldn't have ever provided it to the public. SOMEBODY had to verify he was born in the U.S. before he took the Oath of Office. Did anybody ask for George Bush's college transcripts? He is constantly having to "prove" himself to some right wing segment of our society. Yes, he should be questioned about the political issues – but the outright disrespect of being called a liar and providing his birth certificate to prove his citizenship........Utterly ridiculous.

@joe Really? Sooooo you wondered about this with Bush, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan. Carter ( All the ones in my lifetime, never seen this till now)? and you'll wonder about this with every president from here on in too, right? The reason why people see this as racist is many of us never have seen this happen to a president before now, not even close, never. The biggest difference between him and them is color. Their policies aren't that radically different from this independents point of view, so it just smacks of cowardly racism. I would have more respect for birthers if it WAS blatant.

It is amazing we have high unemployment, record deficits, high gas prices and a foreign policy that is a joke around the world and this is what people are concerned about. More concerned on the poor job President Obama is doing than where he was born

I don't believe this at all...why did it take so long and being president has it perks...still think he wasn't born here...then again I think he is a terrible president.

When CNN (AKA: Continuous Non News) decides to report on serious news and stop alotting so much time to such non-issues from a non-canidate the story will die (to those who matter). The guys only interest is his own self promotion and CNN and others are his free advertising network. There is obviously too much air time to fill and nothing to fill it with but nonsense. CNN and others need to stop the endless cycle and recycling of non-news items to fill air time or political agendas.

I saw a serious post on a blog explaining how the actual birth certificate is fake because Obama had someone with a time machine plant it in order to make it immune to carbon dating.

    Stupid is incurable.

I think it's funny that people try and deny the fact that racism is alive and well in the USA. No one is playing the race-card here because it is what it is. Maybe deep down you are a racist.
Please show me evidence of a previous president that's been asked to show his birth certificate. That’s right, you can’t!

You can't call Donald a racist. After all, he's from that orange minority. And with their genetic predisposition toward bad hair, orange people lack the reasoning capacity the rest of us have and are incapable of grasping the ridiculousness of certain situations.
