Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

Watch an iReporter's response

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

OK, MEDIA....like CNN and others....we know that all you're doing is 'stirring the pot of distraction'. I refuse to watch American news until this ridiculousness has passed. Move on to more important issues. CNN is beginning to become more entertainment than News.

Seriosly all the stuff going on in our country economically, deaths, natural disasters, etc and people are worried about where president Obama was born... Is it that disturbing to people that he made President???? Let him do his job and continue your daily routine... The only thing that bothered me is that Obama took the time to even show his Birth Certificate I would have not done that... HE showed it we saw it leave it alone....

I agree. The media plays into the hands of the government and forgets to be real reporters. What happened to real news that actually showed people what was going on? The media is so controlled by the government it disgusts me. Lets make a big deal about a birth certificate while laws that can potentially destroy the american way of life are put through congress.

As a Canadian watching this debate, I am surprised at how the respect has been lost from for the President of your Country.. for someone like Trump to question Obamas
place of birth is a desperate attempt to gain votes,,,, NOT impressed with the Trumpster!!!!

I agree, there are more important things that should be taken care of. every one is correct why are we focusing on things that are less important than say; economy, oil prices going up when theres tankers waiting, flood, tornados. but at the same time we should have the right as AMERICANS to know that OUR PRESIDENT has obtained his position as the president because not only is he qualified and earned it, but because HE IS AMERICAN and has met the criteria, ya know the part that talks about how long you have to serve in office, minimum age, i think this was covered in 5th grade so maybe people who are mad at everyone wanting to know that the president is qualified is a legitimate questions. I'm not saing its more important than peoples lives but think about this. If he is not legally able to be president what kind of issues would this country have if we found out he was not allowed to be preisdent? people who died in Afgan and Libya, Simulus packages, policies that have been written.

Whoa. Hey looky see hey looky me. I got the golden ticket, now it is off to Opra. If you don't want the action don't play the game. Does anybody remember LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Jimmy Carter. Where was everybody when billy beer came out. Did we not have the Great Clinton wanger. Lets not throw race and media at fault when we have yokels like we have had. Go back as far as the penny papers. Americans want the info as trite or shocking as it maybe. Give this moment it's moment and move on to the next distraction. When palin was doing her thing what was everybody saying; no stop no don't stop. He made it what it was he will make some more in the future let's have some fun.

Now it's time to demand that Donald Trump produce a birth certificate for that thing on his head.

Better yet: Trump should be forced to come up with every one of his marriage certificates and his divorce settlements. That should keep him busy for a while.

Watching, seems like I should get a bed sheet. We shouldn't just use racist word just because there is a disagreement. Were all american's and "HE IS OUR PRESIDENT". You could put my mind at ease if you like to respond to my 4:54PM post.

I love how Trump is acting like he 'beat Obama' or won some kind of victory. Is he really that stupid that he doesn't see his base of supporters eroding faster than a Fire Island beach in January? The birther issue is D.O.A., may it rest in peace and never be raised again. It was racially motivated, plain and simple, time to move on to real issues.

Trump is just happy people aren't still focused on the fact that he publicly tried to pawn off his hospital birthing record as an official birth certificate...

One wonders if this will have any effect at all on the percentage (40% !!) of republicans who don't believe Obama was born in the US. Where on earth do these people get their information?? (don't answer that; we already know!) The disheartening thing about all this is just how effective the right-wing propaganda machine has been in duping a significant bloc of voters. We know elections can be bought; the Big Question is can fascism be bought as well?

We all know that the whacko's(birthers) still will insist that the president wasn't born here, even the proof is there he was. They're about as dumb as those who still believe the moon landing was staged.

It's not about how smart or dumb they are, it's about how much they will cover their eyes and ears just to feel they are right. It's about feeling over fact.

that the dumbest reason i have ever heard in my life. Give me one president that does not have blood on their hands. George Washington had more blood on his hands years before he became a president, but he is considered one of the greats.

you just do not like the fact that a ablack man is president. you use dthe birther issues first now you make up a blood on his hands reason now. go back to your trailer.

I'm ashamed to be an american. The harassment of this president is nothing more than pure racism. It is hatred and racism. Perhaps people bring up the so called race card because it is still a problem. And to think this people proclaim to be christians...this is not what Jesus was about, himself a "man of color". Shameful.

Propaganda monger, Mr. Trump’s verbal banter is propaganda. Mr. Trump evidently would prefer to follow the band wagon and continue this illogical fodder. In other times Mr. Trump may have gotten some of the same results by running around saying, “the sky is falling”. This was an effective campaign tool for Chicken Little. It surprises me that such a maverick would stoop to such lowly levels. Speaking of mavericks, have you heard who Mr. Trump is considering for a running partner, oh let’s not name drop.
Bottom line, for a segment of the American population, it does not matter how much proof is provided; the truth will continue to be denied. The truth is the furthest thing from their minds. Feeding the fires of ignorance seems to be the battle cry. While the truth lies on the ground trampled on and despised, an unknown agenda is at work.

and are people really googling the address of the hospital? Going through the hospitals name changes like that hasn't happened to every major metro hospital in the US? Still no respect. Nothing IS wrong with this country. Seems to be business as usual!

Only problem with that is that over 30 states have "Birther Bills" through or nearly through their state legislature. That would leave Obama fighting appeals to even be on the ballot in those states. This was a better strategy... throw egg on the tea party and save himself 30+ litigation headaches.
