Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

In the military I was taught that even if I don't like a person I still had to respect the position they hold. I think its a disgrace that some big mouths go out of their way to disrespect our President of the United States. So tired of all the noise and ignorance. Be part of the solution, not rhetoric.

I actually feel that people earn respect. If the President of the United States wants respect from me he should earn it. That includes every President we have had thus far. Further, they are no more than a public servant. The same as any other public employee getting paid by my tax dollars. That would mean that he works for me and every other taxpayer in this country and that when his employer (the American taxpayer) asked a question of him, he is to respond. I don't give a hoot about his birth certificate. I believe we have rules and proceedures in place in this country to ensure that those running for the office of President are American-born citizens. I do care that he has done little to help this country solve it's problems. And he can no longer blame the past President for everything that is wrong. I feel like we don't have a President but an ongoing campaign. He talks a good game but doesn't do anything to follow up and get results. Oh, wait, Obama-care. He did do that... thanks a lot!

Has anyone in the press investigated why Trump's Boieng 727 as a foreign registery, but its parked at NYC LGA everyday ? Is this to avoid paying the taxes to the country he wants to be the President of ? The press should start to look into this egotistical tax dodger , because we all know he does not have Americas interest at heart

Good point. In what country is it registered? Also, didn't The Donald state that if President Obama produced this official state of Hawaii recorded birth certificate, he would pubish his tax returns for all to see? Time to put up or shut his pie hole.

The beauty of this is that all of the birthers who thought Obama was stalling, or hiding something, etc now know that he was pretty much just ignoring all this a/o F'ng with them to let them waste there time. brilliant move on Obamas part. He didnt lose sleep over it and let the repubs act like idiots.

Hmmm... My son had a great observation regarding the critics – perhaps we should "recall" our first 5 presidents, after all as English colonists they were not born as American citizens.

We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace–business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.

They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me–and I welcome their hatred.

probably would not do any good to teach that. I still encounter people that think Alaska and New Mexico are not part of the United States.

For all the TEABAGGERS that consume their day by coming up with racist attack after racist attack towards the 1st BLACK President, I hope your daughters and sons bring home a BLACK significant other so you can then act as you really want to towards them. Then when you alienate your loved one with your narrow minded stupidity, you MIGHT just then get it that your "hidden" hatred towards minorities will now also be directed at someone you love.

Donald Trump is a pompous jerk trying to get better rating on his show. If he were to run for President, America would hit an all time low. Now your republican pukes put your jabs at President Obama's legitimacy as a US citizen to rest. For those of you that still don't believe he is a true blooded American get the hell out of the country! We don't need you prejudice hate mongers!

I have tuned out of mainstream news, including CNN, for many weeks because of this ignorant dribble passing as news. But I tuned in just for the laugh. "Carnival barkers!!!" Way to tell them, President Obama.

The birther idiots will probably claim next that Hawaii isn't a state because it is in the middle of the ocean instead of "attached to the mainland. Trump is such a cartoon character, he believes we have troops in Libya. Obama delayed releasing the birth certificate just to show how out of touch and crazy the teabaggers and some republicans are. "This is you you all voted for, losers and fools."

Alaska is physicially closer to Russia than to the Continental US, so wouldn't that make Palin a foreigner, too?

After observing the color of the birth certificate, Trump apparently has discovered evidence that the color green was not invented until 1969 – well after the birth certificate was supposedly issued.
