Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

The crazies don't care. They will say that this is faked–anything to make themselves feel better about the fact that a black man (gasp) is leader of the free world. I'm white, by the way.

i not sure but i'm pretty sure that the term "african" wasn't used in the race section back in the 1960's............It took'em 3 yrs to produce it........what pi$$es me off...we knew everything about gW bush before he was elected (ie birth, college transcripts, room mates, who his drug dealer was, etc) yet your a racist if you just ask for ANY part of Barry's past. GIMMIE a BREAK!

Wrong. Bush never released his college transcripts. If anything, he actively tried to suppress investigations into his past, such as his National Guard service. FAIL.

Perhaps because anyone with a brain would have accepted the birth certificate he released in 2008?

Because no other president has ever had to be faced with this. And nor should they. This is a fine day for racists that's for sure.

Because there was no legitimate reason. He'd already been elected and the courts had ruled the evidence for eligibility. Now you've got states suddenly trying to pass legislation to keep him off their ballots.

Exactly. Funny that if you want to put your child up for Little League you need to show a birth certificate. If you want to get a drivers license in California you need to show a birth certificate. But running for President you do not have to? Get real. I don't care where he was born just so long as the rules do not change for him that apply to everyone else.

White , Black, Brown I don't care what color you are, you still need to show this as it is the only way to prove you are eligiable for running as it proves both requirements. Are you over 35 years old and are you a natural born citizen. One piece of paper is all it takes.

The real question is why did they not just show it? Acting like it is an insult to be asked is BS. I have a 15 year old ask me for my ID everytime I charge something on a credit card.

True or not...I don't really care. But the fact remains the President and his staff could have squelched this rumor long time ago by releasing his Birth Certificate from the start. Obama has no one to blame but himself for his arrogance.

Donald keeps saying that we need to move on and talk about more important things like OPEC, gas prices and job creation. Let's also point out, Trump has filed bankruptcy more than once. I don't think Trump is a good business model for America's finances. Donald will be haunted by this birth certificate mess forever and this fiasco is his claim to fame–as well as him showing the world he is an utmost racist. Not only does Trump have doubts about Obama's place of birth, Trump also believes that Obama was a very bad student and did not deserve to get into Harvard. Lastly, Trump says that he needs to look at the birth certficate and make sure it's real. And what authority does Trump have to do this? How come other Presidents do not have to show their birth certificate to America? Trump, you're fired!

It's so funny to hear the wingnuts say "Nobody has ever heard of him around school but then say I heard he was a bad student"
For all the people saying that Bush had to produce his BC, of course he did but he wasnt force to put it online and in the media.

Google this: 1890 Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital founded by Queen Kapiolani and was intended to "propagate and perpetuate the race." The Hawaiian population had fallen from highs of 300,000 in 1778 to 73,138 in 1853.

I can't believe it, is this a joke! There are enough more important issues that need attention. President Obama is right what he said that he will concentrate on more urgent issues, let the President work on what we need and don't waste his time Mr. Trump. What have we gained by all this, what? Absolutely nothing!

I think he is a great President. He could get a lot more done if he didnt have to constantly deal with do nothing congress whose sole purpose to getting elected is to see him fail. He is also dealing with public that is so fanatically focused on him not being born in America, that they doe not see the changes for good all around them. No, he hasn't been able to keep all the promises that he made, and that is true of every president. But he has given us something we didnt have, and that is the chance to actully respect the man in the oval office. He is doing what he can with what he has to work with, which, by the way...aint much!

I understand it is The Donald's turn to show us his tax forms. Isn't that what he promised? Bet that would never happen. In the meantime, maybe somebody could convince Ed to watch his own news network instead of watching FOX all day.

It is stupid and disgusting to hear all the comments about the BC. He has been voted in, let it be. Go tp the poles in 2012 I am really tired of listening to Anderson Cooper bashing and interrupting the guest while he tries to get his point across while Trump he is speaking. Very Rude to interupt Have some respect and stop verbalizing your view point you are a host. Act like one
