Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

Watch an iReporter's response

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

You in the media need to stop giving all these crazies like Trump the time of day. They do not deserve it and the American people do not want to hear it. Day after day after day, your talking "journalist" hash, rehash, and rehash that hash again. It's ridiculous. We lost 9 Americans in Afganistan today, we've lost many in the tornadoes tearing homes and lives apart! - get with the program CNN. Also, Ed Henry should be ashamed of himself - he played right into the birthers hands today at the White House press meeting. I thought better of him - but no more.

C'mon guys. Everybody knows that the VERY first rule of Photoshop is NEVER make it perfect. Notice that this PHOTOCOPY of the 'original' is PERFECTLY lined up with the security paper? After all this, why wouldn't he give us a copy of the original? Why not show the original? This is just making the uninformed SHEEPLE point fingers and call us racist. Just get back with your heard. We have the RIGHT to question it. Or, do we not have the right to question our dictator?

Can someone please explain how Trump became filthy rich. He is very abrasive and full of himself. The things he says sound like it comes from a 3rd grader. The worse is his need every few months to stick his nose where it doesn't belong. First it was Rosie O'Donnell now our president. I hate when people call the race card but this time I'm calling it. Where was the teaparty when our country was falling apart and Bush got caught lying about the WMD's so he could oust Saddam Hussien out of Iraq. I'll tell you where they were, at home washing their white sheet.

James Carville is right. Donald Trump would be the worst nominee the Republicans could choose for President. He just tries to find more and more ' distortions' in Obama's life. If Trump goes after Mrs.Obama, and does not stop this "Sore Loser" harassment, the White House should file a lawsuit against NBC and Trump International.

Now living in England has some harsh realities but I think this fiasco is astonishing. To think some Americans would go out to publicly vilianise their own president on a 'hear say' imaginary propoganda says alot about America. My friends and I sincerely now think that all white people no matter how nice they may appear to be in your presence, are and will always be absolutely racist as it runs through their blood and there is nothing they can do about it as they were generated to create havock upon the planet in every evil form and shape. Just like a virus Racism has now become a shape shifter.

I have seen and heard a lot of things but white americans you have to face the fact you have internationally victimised an educated black honest hard working black male with a family. What message are you really sending to the lost black males who are trying to be like him.

Do not try to be all that you can be as I will cut you down and hang you from the nearest tree, look I can do this to your hero and leader, as he is nothing. I am a shape shifter, I am racism.

@Sarah – No. You cannot lump all white americans with this group – doing so is just as bad and is a form of reverse racism. Not everyone who was white believed the birther story.

Give it a rest. It was a legit question since his place of birth makes a hugh difference. Now that the certificate is out there, the question can be put to rest. And I am sorry to disappoint you, but there is NO RACISM in that request. Get over it!!!!!!

Dan is the face of the problem in the U.S. It's the one that puts everyone down. And when his idiocy is finally exposed with certainty he just says "get over it." Move to your own island, Dan, and take your idiot republican buddies with you.

The whole birther thing was publisized by Democrats – no Republican elected official or party leader has ever said word one about the birth issue. Why do you think OBAMA waited until Trump forced his hand before giving out the certificate – and spent $2 million dollars not to reveal it? He was waiting until right before the election to do it – this is Alinsky politics at its best. But, it is the POTUS playing games here – which shows you how little character this guy has.

It's a great way to get people's minds off the crappy economy and OBAMA's dismal record everywhere else. A great fund raising tool too.

The Republicans know this and desperately want the issue to die – but the Democrats want it to continue. That's what's really going on – you see the Media matters and Moveon.Org people posting all over the blogs posing as Republicans obsessed with the birth issue – like I said – Alinsky politics.

He is supposed to be a president of the people, not the black people, white people, rich people, or poor people, just of the people. If the people want proof, why would the president not just satisfy the PEOPLE and show this information two years ago? This should have been a slam dunk decision, especially when it started becoming an issue.

First of all I would like to point out that I am a white female. I applaud President Obama for the way he handle this controversy this week. He did not point fingers or name names. He was calm even though you could tell he was frustrated. The "birthers" are the epitomy of racism – at least the ones that I know personally – and they have embarrassed themselves beyond belief. President Obama had to show proof that he was a "natural born citizen" before he entered office. Alot of republicans believe that he has not done a good job because he has not gotten us out of the debt that Bush got us in. I believe that he has stayed as true as he possible can to his campaign message – with a little bending for compromise. He worked on the healthcare plan, he is working on getting the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan and he is working, with a lot of resistance, on getting our debt lowered. Yes, he's had to spend some money to do it but we all have to spend money to get out of debt. It won't happen over night. You always start with baby steps before you run a marathon.

I don't give a damn if someone's black, asian, mexican, native american, or all of them. If they can do their job better than the next guy they are hired. I believe in merit not color and I am white.

Well, part of the problem Dan, and the reason birthers are perceived as racist is: it wasn't a legitimate question. Obama was determined qualified to be the president by the Federal Elections Committee before he ran. He won and was sworn in. It was all legal.

Eh, that doesn't read right to me. The truth is that all questions are legitimate. But when one asks a question, that was dis-proven before it was even asked, and yet despite all evidence to the contrary, keep going on about it. A lot of people wonder why. When the people asking that question are often associated with a group that has been in the news because of the racist nature of signs at their rallies, some people come to the conclusion that the people asking the question are racist.

All the "birther" silliness was never about his citizenship. There is no evidence President Obama could provide that would have mattered to the birthers. All birthers are racist simpletons. This birther nonsense started long before President Obama's campaign for the White House. His citizenship was questioned in U.S. Senate campaign flyers and ads. Racists are only talented at ignoring facts. It is a shame that the entire world has to see American racism but bigotry is hard to hide.

although i agree all this does leave one with the "impression' it was racial- i believe that everyone is missing the big picture- the Right/Republicans/tea party folks know for a fact the "general public" love a good conspiriacy story. We , as a society, have fallen into the JERRY SPRINGER syndrome- they KNEW it would become a big distraction- they knew it was poking a stick at Obama. pure and simple . THEY loved making this an non-issue issue. Trumps cant be that dumb- And i still like the quote i heard last year when this was floating around the news- if Hillary Clinton could have proven this to be true during the democratic primaries, she would have buried him! (i was listening to a local talk show here in charlotte nc yesterday- it was sad to hear people call in and STILL NOT BELIEVE THE TRUTH about Obama being born in Hawaii! its not racism- its IGNORANCE! We have become a society of overweight, self indulgent, screw you, zombie sheep people. To quote- "A PERSON CAN BE SMART – BUT PEOPLE ARE STUPID"

Wrong wrong wrong – you are being manipulated at a very sophisticated level. This is what;s going on:

The whole birther thing was never allowed to die as a result of Democrat efforts to keep the issue alive – no Republican elected official or party leader has ever said word one about the birth issue. Why do you think OBAMA waited until Trump forced his hand before giving out the certificate – and spent $2 million dollars in legal fees not to reveal it? He could have revealed the long form certificate at the first mention of this issue – but he didn't. Why?

He was waiting until right before the election to do it – this is Alinsky politics at its best. But, it is the POTUS playing games here – which shows you how little character this guy has. It's also great way to get people's minds off the crappy economy and OBAMA's dismal record everywhere else. A great fund raising tool too. I've confirmed this view with people I know in the Democrat Party. A very cynical way to do business, but that's the Democrat way.

In short, the Republicans know that the birth issue is a red herring and desperately want the issue to die – but the Democrats have all along wanted it to continue. That's what's really going on – you see the Media Matters and Moveon.Org people posting all over the blogs posing as Republicans obsessed with the birth issue – like I said – Alinsky politics.

I am really surprised that CNN is repeatedly stooping to name calling. Anderson and many others on his show use the derogatory term "birthers" over and over. This is like using the "N" word or calling people "stupid" for having an opinion. It is an attempt to give legitimacy to an argument that it is not OK to question why the president did not produce his birth certificate. The agenda of CNN is quite evident with this type of skewed reporting.

Maybe Rick cause the birthers ARE stupid! Why hasn't any other president produced their BC to the American public? The birthers are just a bunch of lunatics and I find it funny that Trump decided he needed to take the lead role in this movement. I find it pathetic that these birthers put this above other issues that are plaguing this country. I will remember this come next election and if any Republican candidate wants me to consider voting for them then they better show me proof of their BC in PERSON! Otherwise they lose my vote!
