Overheard on CNN.com: Readers respond to birth certificate

Comment of the morning: "(President Barack) Obama just pulled out his Trump card." - Cavemullah

Obama releases original long-form birth certificate

Doubters that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, led recently by possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, got their answer Wednesday when the White House released Obama's original birth certificate. "Birthers" have insisted that Obama was born overseas - possibly in his father's home country of Kenya - and therefore may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. Obama said Wednesday that he released his original birth certificate because the country does not "have time for this kind of silliness."

Many CNN.com readers expressed frustration that the president was put in the position of having to show his birth certificate at all.

CrunkSwaggaG said, "I think Donald Trump and about half of the Republican Party owe President Obama a sincere apology." flatbushfred said, "Obama shouldn't have had to do this. It's blatant racism." LPLove said, "No president in history has ever been treated this way. The birthers are nothing more than racists wrapping themselves in the flag. Disgusting." harryball said, "I feel bad for this guy. When was the last time a president was forced to show his birth certificate two years into his presidency? Oh that's right, never. Even as president, black people are still being treated as second-class citizens."

Watch an iReporter's response

About Trump’s role in the controversy, CNN.com readers had plenty to say:

icecold12 said, "Now Trump has to live up to his end of the deal and deliver his income tax information and net worth. Obama called his bluff and I bet he folds." BobSacamano said, "I'd like to know how much debt Trump has discharged throughout his life by claiming bankruptcy. How many millions has he stiffed his investors and creditors for?"

USAlegend said, OBAMA: "On Your Face Sucker, Here is my Birth Certificate.’ TRUMP: "Well......huh.....hmmmm....But this doesn't prove that you are not a Muslim."

And now that the original certificate has been released, many CNN.com readers said it still won’t be enough for birthers.

W2ATL said, "This really won't matter. These clowns will have some new madness to cry about in three hours." livingston1 responded, “Really, do you think it will take that long? That kind of hate blinds them to any sense of reason.” Nagaina said, “Countdown to someone claiming the long form birth certificate is an 'obvious forgery'...3...2...1.” BubbaSponge said, “Now hopefully the birthers will give it a rest once and for all!!” TikiGawd said, “Nah, they'll start a movement saying Hawaii isn't really part of the United States because it's 'overseas.' " iroshi said, “It's a shame the ‘birthers’ can't focus on an issue that is actually important. For instance, the national debt, unemployment, taxes, etc. What an incredible waste of time and money this has been.”

And you, Richard, and all of your conspiracy theory, tin foil on your head so the aliens won't read your thoughts, tea bagger nut jobs are seriously unbalanced. But you are enormously entertaining for those of us who are sane and still have a sense of humor. Never stop "Dick", you and The Donald are endlessly entertaining.

You birthers are dumber than a bag of nuts. Your fiasco has helped Obama to maintain name recognition on the level of a national campaign and re-affirm his never loss credibility. You all are trully looking like the monkey's uncle..

      Shane,

Then why did he spend millions of dollars and two years hiding it? It is a fake certificate and is an illegal act that should get him impeached and prosecuted. The sooner the better. We need to take our country back!!

I'm sorry to say this but I think that the paper might be FAKE!!! I think they should have the paper carbon dated

    • pennrandall

Shane, it is easy to defeat carbon dating. You find paper that is as old as you need it to be and then use it to print the fake birth certificate on it. Carbon dating would just prove that they were smart enough to use old paper, not much of a trick at all. It is still fake, and not even a good one.

hahaha.. wow bro your comment was so funny I almost fell out of my chair. Carbon dating for one is accurate within 10 to 20 year range, its not exact like we always hear on the news. Why don't you guys just live with it. The toughest thing in life is admitting your wrong. I did it when I thought 9/11 was an inside job (i was young and stupid). If you don't want a black president just say so.. stop with this birther stuff your sounding like a shmuck

Why can't the media call the birthers exactly what they are- racists. And shame on the serious Replublicans for coddling to them.
The birthers (racists) make mockery of our policitical system and have destroyed the respect that the office of the President deserves.
The writer above is exactly right- let's see your financials Donald Trump. Obama called your bluff.

I think it is fair to say that this whole fiasco was a huge political blunder by Obama, given that he made it a special deal to run a "transparent" campaign and presidency. He could-and should-have done this four years ago. The reality is that in this day and age, people have an expectation to know every little detail about the lives of candidates. Have we forgotten the vetting that Clinton and Bush went through? In my opinion, the mainstream media did not dig for dirt (or even plain ol' background info) on Obama nearly as much as they did on Clinton or Bush, which left the job in the hands of the citizen media and which left the door open for conspiracy theories.

Any chance the media has to make trouble for President Obama they charge full steam ahead and have ever since his election. This doesn't explain why he spent over 2 million of our tax dollars to protect/hide his certificate from those that asked. He should have just produced it, saved us millions, and quieted all the racists (LOL). And Linda, you should watch some footage of Obama saying clear as day that he is Muslim and born in Kenya. He says one thing but real footage says another. Don't trust this guy and never will. Just because I research candidates does not make me racist just informed.

I guess somewhere between 56 and 70% of the population in this country are racists. Of course the preachers of the churches BO attends are not. LOL... Check out the blogs and try to figure out where the hate comes from.
Why is it dems think people who don't have their views of the world are either racist or stupid?

I doubt that this will change anything. Further proving an already proven fact is not going to change the mind of the 'birthers' and others like them. To these people, facts are irrelevant. They operate purely on beliefs. Facts that show them to be wrong do not have any effect on them.

Nearly all their arguments on a variety of topics in recent years have been shown to be wrong by facts, but that hasn't stopped them or even slowed them down. It's no wonder the country's in such bad shape when many of the people in power pay no attention to facts and just continue blindly following their beliefs even after they've been proven wrong.

      Radical America,
It is a COMPLIMENT to Our Lord Jesus Christ–and to those of his followers who truly endeavor to understand and follow his teachings–to acknowledge that the Sermon on the Mount is, in fact, radical. Here is the Oxford English Dictionary's definition of "radical": "Characterized by independence of, or departure from, what is usual or traditional; progressive, unorthodox, or revolutionary (in outlook, conception, design, etc.)" Surely you do not believe that Our Lord was just saying the same old stuff that the Roman government officials held up as orthodoxy?

@Michele - That is the some of the screwiest "reasoning" I've ever seen in a CNN forum. If Jesus -whoever or whatever that is- was a radical, then the very definition that makes him one makes Christians NOT radical. What's radical about clinging to a centuries-old idea?

Actually, Tom, if people simply accepted the short form birth certificate, which is official and was released long ago, the whole story would have been over. Why do you think they didn't? Iif you click on the link on the CNN web page, you'll see that it is NOT standard policy for Hawaii to give out copies of the long form birth certificate. President Obama had to make a special request, and that request could well have been denied. AND if he'd made the request two years ago, and it had been granted, no doubt someone, somewhere (Trump?) would have cried foul and said that the president was receiving preferential treatment.

By the way, it's "dragged," not "drug."

Okay, so where are the Republicans demanding McCain's birth certificate? (And, btw, he actually was NOT born in the U.S. but in the Panama Canal Zone: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/28/us/politics/28mccain.html?ei=5090&en=45d24e7c7a991183&ex=1361941200&adxnnl=1&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1303931134-XA1yNZRzYgUD0PUo+k7uqg). Romney's? Huckabee's? Palin's? And so on. I want the same standard applied to all candidates from now on. Because after all, without seeing their long form, how do we REALLY know where they were born?

Shame on those who are blaming the victim...This sure seems like right-wing politics as usual: divert the national attention from the real issues, so the rich and powerful can accrete more money and power and further widen the gap between rich and poor in this country.

"All other candidates showed theirs prior to election, why didn't he?"

NOBODY had to dig up the original long-form 'birth certificate' from the hospital. It would be pointless, because *this form is not what you use to officially prove citizenship*.

If any other candidates actually submitted proof of where they were born, I'm sure it was a 'certificate of live birth', since that is generally the only thing officially recognized by the government.

They gave him a free pass and anyone that questioned anything about him was immediately ridiculed and shut down. Now we're seeing the result of this social experiment with the country close to bankruptcy, credit rating reduced, high unemployment, highest gas prices in year, inflation creeping in and driving up costs of food and other products....did I leave anything out?

This could have been put to rest 2 years ago, but it wasn't. The Obama administration didn't think it was necessary, and overestimated public outcry. The state of Hawaii didn't have the computerized form when Obama was born, so the data from the original birth certificate had to have been transcribed. Questions remained primarily because Obama was born to a father who was not a US citizen, was known to travel outside the US frequently, and the family lived in Indonesia when Obama was a lad. As a non-US citizen, even I can see cause for concern that could and should have been definitively addressed two years ago. Give credit to Trump, he asked the hard question, pressed the issue until it was finally addressed, and said that he hoped everything proved Obama to be a US citizen. It seems to me that you Yanks could use someone with the balls to ask the hard questions and press the issues without fear of retribution from the press (including CNN) given everything you've been through as of late.

@DwayneL......uh yeah, as a matter of fact, you did leave something out. A big something. All the problems you reeled off, how 'bout we just lay it at the door of where those problems were started. Your buddy, the one that was selected by the Supreme Court AND Dick Cheney, no doubt.

@DwayneL: What party was in charge at the time Obama ran for President? Republicans. So, why did the Republicans let Obama run for President if they could have asked for his BC and stopped him at the time? If there was a cover up at the time, then it had to be the party of the then-President, not of the current administration... And, the media aren't the ones who should have (or even did) ask for proof of birth. And, if you remember (and I'm sure you don't) Obama inherited the mess we're in and is doing what he can to get us out (highest average gas prices ever in the US were when there was a Republican in office, look it up).

I am a republican and I am going to search the web for any "birther" politician and actively campaign against them so that we don't have that nonsense in DC.

Would have been nice to provide this info from the beginning instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars trying to cover it up. Let's just drop it now.

Will one of you who claims that millions of dollars were spent "hiding" the birth certificate, please tell me where the money was spent?? I really can't imagine that millions, or, for that matter, any money, would have to be spent "hiding" a birth certificate unless it was being flown around the country in some top-secret government jet to keep it "hidden."

He did provide the official BC when he ran. Only that you closet racists, freaks and nutjobs weren't satisfied with it.

I am sure you will shortly be whining that this is a forgery.

I think Obama made a mistake releasing this. He should have let Trump and other birthers drive the GOP off the cliff and released his long form BC the day after the Republican convention.

Instead of finding solutions to problems, Donald focuses on creating problems. Even the few deas he does have, such as getting into a trade war with China, would sink the country for good. Walmart alone will try to get him deported for that one

It is not Trump's responsibility to find solutions to problems, it is however Obama's job..... and he is failing miserably.

Without the troubled asset relief program, three of the four megabanks would have failed which would have triggered a run on the banks not seen since the 1929 depression. The four megabanks hold 40% of the total US deposits. The credit derivative exposure that occurred before President Obama took office totaled $83 trillion or roughly the world GNP. The economic downturn could have been much worse. If you paid attention to your 401k or IRA you would have recovered all of the losses which occurred during the 4th quarter of 2008. If you invested in energy, some tech stocks and gold, you would be up at least 35% this year alone. So, Steve, you need to pay attention.

People have a right to question the president without be called names. He has certainly insulted enough people! Mr Transparency has been anything but and his comments and actions have been troubling to many, many people. It is hard to believe anything he says. Anyone can create a birth certificate but not everyone has a grandma in Kenya claiming to have been present at his birth!

Being completely out of touch with what the majority of the country believes and ignoring any sort of criticism has him on track to have a lot more time to work on his golf and basketball game effective 1.20.13. A complete lack of leadership is not something that should be in the job description.
