The compound where Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces is located a bit more than 1,000 yards from a Pakistan Military Academy, raising some questions about how much information the Pakistan military may have had about his whereabouts.
U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, said during a press conference that the Pakistani army has "a lot of explaining to do."
"I think the Pakistani army and intelligence have a lot of questions to answer, given the location, the length of time and the apparent fact that this facility was actually built for bin Laden and its closeness to the central location of the Pakistani army," Levin said. "So I think the army and the intelligence of Pakistan have plenty of questions that they should be answering and hopefully they are being asked by the Pakistani government."
Abbottabad is home to Pakistan's equivalent of West Point – and the website of the Pakistani military even describes the PMA as "a short distance from Abbottabad" also noting "a fine straight road leads to PMA."
Levin said while he appreciated some of the remarks made by President Asif Ali Zardari, he expected that he would have talks with the military about what they knew.
"I do think that the Pakistani president's statement today was a very reassuring statement when he very specifically said that he thinks it is a great victory and that it's a success and he congratulates us on the success of the operation," he said.
But although Levin said he was "not necessarily suspicious" that Zardari or civilian leadership knew, he added, "I must tell you I hope (Zardari) ... will follow through and ask some very tough questions of his own military and his own intelligence. They have got a lot of explaining to do."

I may have had the misfortune to have been born and to live in Pakistan – a country crippled by corrupt and weak Govts. and a two-faced army. However, I wept on 9/11 and I rejoiced today. Being born in Pakistan may make you ashamed, cynical and frustrated but does not automatically rob you of your humanity. There are millions of people in Pakistan who feel the same way and scores have been killed for it.
Thank you for reminding us that we should not be tarring the entire country of Pakistan with the terrorism brush. Millions of ordinary Pakistanis wept with us on 9/11 and are rejoicing today – let's not be too hasty to brand an entire people! We complain bitterly when America is besmirched by the actions of a minority, let's not do the same!!
There was an interesting comment made last night in one of the analysis sessions on CNN. Till six to eight months, it was Pakistan's ISI that was guiding US (CIA+Military) on 'Osama-hunt'. The analysis said that for past six months, US has been operating solo and that Pakistan government has expressed displeasure over it.
So for past 10 year, we've been (mis)guided. Once we ditched the trusted 'ally' – it took us little over six months.

Of course the Pakistani government knew where he was, does anyone really believe that the ISI doesn't know everything that happens in that country ? That he was hiding in a place that stod out for its size, security precautions, and secrecy makes it all the more obvious. The people of Pakistan are Muslims and the vast majority are sympathetic to Al Qaeda and any jihadists. Let's stop kidding ourselves, we may not be at war with Islam but Islam is at war with US ! Wake up.
Can anybody in the world believe that Pak did not know where Laden is? Is USA trying to fool the world. Everybody know Laden was USA's Conman till Russian left Afganistan. Most of the muslim terrorism is funded by Saudi Arabia. USA know that, everybody knows and yet it most arrogantly carries on with alliance with Saudi, and Pakistan. It may not be wrong to say there is a nexus of greed between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and US like a curse hanging on the world.
