Leopards, panthers, bear, other animals saved from luggage at Thai airport

Thai police confiscated two leopards, two panthers, an Asiatic black bear, one macaque monkey and one marmoset from the luggage of a man as he tried to board a flight from Bangkok to Dubai on Friday, Thai authorities and an anti-trafficking group reported.

The animals were alive and received immediate veterinary care, according to the group, the FREELAND Foundation, which monitored the arrest.

The suspect, Noor Mahmoodr, a citizen of the United Arab Emirates, was charged with possessing endangered wildlife and smuggling endangered wildlife, said Col. Kiattipong Khaosum-arng of the Thai nature crime police. Mahmoodr was released on bail pending trial, police said.

“We believe Mahmoodr has done this several times already, and there is a network involved in this case,” Kiattipong told CNN.

He said police received a tip that the smuggling attempt would happen Friday morning and were waiting at the airport to make an arrest.

There maybe thousands of dan smith's granted but how many people use their full name here. The person doing this usually signs on as someone he wants make so derogatory statement about. He does it on nearly every blog to various people at first I wasn't sure when I saw him doing it to other people but then I saw him logging one right after me using my name making the same ignorant comments about me that he was making about other people and it's just stupid.

Should be a "stiffer" penalty and this man should NOT be able to travel freely!

The animals received immediate veterinary care? Wow! The airport has its own staff of veterinarians now!

@ Bill. If you read the ENTIRE story it specifically states that there was a tip letting them know that this was going to happen. It's obvious the law enforcement community felt the tip was credible and they came prepared to save and protect the animals.

What a loser! It makes me so sad that people think it's ok to STUFF these CREATURES in a freaking bag. If people want to break the law, I don't care, but when it involves treating these animals poorly... it makes me cringe.

I absolutely share your sentiments! The horrendous and torturous treatment of animals by people is something we should all fight against. No one should be able to treat poor, innocent creatures so inhumanely.

By the way, if you agree with the above statement (or even if you don't, but you felt a sense of sadness and wrongdoing when you read this article) you need to educate yourself on FACTORY FARMING and how the animals we raise for food products are treated. There is no reason these innocent creatures should be subject to such torture either. If you chastise someone for brutal treatment of animals and then walk into a Subway and buy a turkey sandwich, you are a humongous hypocrite and you are just as guilty of animal mistreatment and torture as they are. Stop supporting factory farming!

I second that! We need to get back to basics: eye-for-an-eye! Stuff his stupid ass in a bag and put him under the plane! How sad being in there in darkness, can't see, can't tell what's happening. This guy is the biggest loser/moron ever!

Leopards and panthers are the same animal. If 'panther' means black panther, that's a color phase variation, not a different species.

I am so sick of animal abuse I could explode. The people who do this should absolutely arrested immediately,
and throw away the key. Mindless, inhumane, greedy creeps. Same for people who participate in canned hunts,
call themselves "sport" hunters, owners of puppy mills, and on and on. Morons with guns.

I won't feed that rotten meat to a vulture! Releasing him on bail was stupid. Lock him up and he would have sang like the parrot in his bag. It would have helped to roll up the whole smuggling network!

You know, everyone is blowing this WAY out of hand. Work it out. Put him in a cage with all of the mommy animals and they can talk it out.

Having those mommy animals in a cage for the purpose of producing expensive babies is just as bad. Send that smuggler back (on bail) to Dubai inside his own suitcase in the luggage compartment. Do it as many times as animals he's smuggled and that will be justice served.

The story behind this is that there is a huge market in these oli-rich countries for exotic animals. Remember the tigers and other animals that were found in Saddam's home? You need to condemn the buyers as well as the smugglers. The other thing that is unsaid is that no one smuggles animals through any part of Asia without a network of locals who are paid off. Someone provided all those animals to the smuggler. And someone at the Dubai airport was going to allow them in. Corruption runs deep and wide in any kind of smuggling, but especially with animals.

I propose that anyone caught participating in this animal torture should be stuffed into a suitcase and flown to the other side of the world.

"Isabella was a pleasant suprise for Panther Ridge Conservation center. Her mom Tia was not feeding her, so Isabella needed to be hand reared .."
Despite all the resources available in the U.S. Isabella was working at an early age in the modeling industry of South Florida. You can see her on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyQrKvc7_NU. This video shows where Isabella really spent her time. This place is no conservation center. See other videos and notice method of advertisement.
