A woman was killed when she was swept over Niagara Falls, according to news reports.
Witnesses said the woman appeared to be alive as she approached the brink of the Horseshoe Falls about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, reported CNN affiliate WIVB-TV in Buffalo, New York.
The Maid of the Mist, the vessel that takes tourists to the foot of the falls in the Niagara River, dispatched a boat to help her, but she was dead when it reached her, according to the WIVB report.
The woman has not been identified, and her death is under investigation by the Niagara Parks police and Niagara Regional Police, according to a report in the Niagara Gazette. Foul play was not suspected, WIVB reported.
On Monday, two men in a small boat came within 700 feet of the brink of the falls before they were pulled to safety, CNN affiliate WGRZ-TV in Buffalo reported. The motor failed on the men's boat, and the current carried them toward the falls before rescuers were able to hook the craft with a rescue line, according to the report.

I don't believe my sister would be stupid or suicidal enough. Of course I'm assuming she didn't get pushed or something similarly tragic.
No one believes they or someone they love would ever get to the point where something terrible like this would happen. But that is the nature of tragedies such as this. The people that survive are left scratching their heads and wondering how this ever happened.
My sister wouldn't be such a blithering moron as to get into the river, upstream of the falls, in the first place!

Would someone PLZ send CNN a decent picture of Niagara Falls!?! This is the best they can do... ? Hello, CNN... this is the Horseshoe Falls – you know... the Canadian side? There only have to be about 100 million photos of them taken every year... mostly in summer that plainly provide a perspective for the size of the falls. Try one with the Maid of the Mist near the base of the falls, they depart every 30 minutes.
Maybe the pic is Horseshoe Falls because...I don't know...she went over HORSESHOE Falls. I am sure there are tons of nice Niagara pics...this one has to do with...hmmm...what's that called...THE STORY. RTF Article and stop whining!
And also... the Canadian side is far more picturesque than the US side. Sorry, Merkins!!
I believe the poster is in full realization that this is horseshoe falls and equally informed of what a poor choice of image it is for the story. DUH, you seem to be the only one confused here.

So sorry to hear about this woman's tragic death. For those of you who make ignorant and unkind comments or jokes, SHAME ON YOU!!!! The news reports don't state how or why the woman was in the water at the falls, but before you speculate, ask yourself, how would you feel if it was a friend or a family member who lost their life, regardless of the reasons. You are truly heartless individuals.

speaking as someone who grew up just 20 min from niagara falls, this is not a big news story - unfortunately it happens several times every year. my condolences to this family and all the others who have endured such a tragedy.
and i agree – get a better pic of the falls cnn – preferably not a winter shot to be used in a june article.

People around the world are dying of hunger, illness, and other tragedies they have no control over. I'm sure the authorities in charge of Niagara Falls have implemented several seemingly Darwin-proof measures to keep people from meeting their demise. I would rather have sympathies for a child that dies of hunger and illness than someone that found a way to get around the safety measures at Niagara Falls. Congrats for proving that Darwinian laws still exist.
