2 people die as bear flies through SUV

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

No alcohol or drugs were involved, and police are still trying to determine each vehicle's speed in the 90 kph (56 mph) zone, Fournel said, adding that charges are unlikely.

"It's a first, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We had similar accident several years ago with a deer going through the windshield and ending up in the back seat, where it injured a boy. He wasn't killed, he was hurt. But it was not like this."

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told the Canadian television network CBC.

The accident occurred near the town of Luskville, about 25 miles northwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

This is EXACTLY why Stephen Colbert has been warning us about bears for years.

Wow do some of you ever need to grow up. I don't see how an article about two people and a bear dying can turn into calling people names and completely disrespecting the victims’ families. You people are pretty stupid, and completely thoughtless.

I could not agree more. I really wonder if people are trying to get a reaction – positive or negative. A sudden accident such as this is tragic. I was widowed at 30 by sudden car accident. I am now 34 and it would have been our 15 year wedding anniversary this year. The pain remians. Yes, it get easier, but you never forget. I hope the people posting the non sense never have to experience such an event. The young lady and man had their future taken from them. The family is now left to pick up the pieces and try and move on. No one involved will ever be the same. My thought are with all of their family and friends.

We used to see similar accidents in the Middle East, when a car hit a camel and the camel went through the windshield. It was very, very rare when the driver survived OR the passenger. The camel, never.
Wow, talk about a freak accident in THIS case! :(

Stop saying that they need to fix what they said about nobody being hurt, people, they mean that nobody in the FIRST car that sent the bear into the 2nd car was hurt.

As someone who knows the family of one of the deceased – I beg everyone on here to think of their families.
Imagine how you would feel if they were your loved ones and you read some of the things that are being said on here. It isn't Obama's fault, Bush's fault or anyone's fault. It was an ACCIDENT!
They're horrible, but they do happen.
And people should remember the people involved, and even the animal – but the comments section of an article about an acident that resulted in death is NOT the place to make fun of them, blame others or any of that.

Before you post – please have some common sense and compassion for the families involved!

Wow! What a horrible accident. Even if they were going to fast, which it doesn't state if they were, what are the chances you would hit a bear and send it through some else's car window. Really sad! I'll send up a prayer for their families.

the key here is the Sunfire accelerated the carcass toward the SUV going in the opposing direction. This made the two speeds additive so that the resulting collision was worse than if the SUV had just hit the animal. You really need to be ready to duck at all times to save yourself. the same is true when a wheel comes off a car going the other way.

You can guess what a basket case the sunfire occupants are in. Freak accident or not, such things tear people apart inside.

Hi I read all the comments that have been Posted. And come to find that we are all human being, and that it makes know difference where we are from. Can't we all live together in peace and harmony some day. Let's start now. The only thing the bear wanted to do was to cross the road to the other side. But unforeseen act of motion took place, and cause a terrible accident. Please my friends let keep Love in the family not Hate. John Lennon
