Glass staircase not dress friendly

For years, women across America have dealt with glass ceilings. But now, women in Ohio have a new problem - glass floors.

A $105 million courthouse opened in Franklin County, Ohio, on Monday, but the builders seemed to have forgotten one thing - the bottom of the stairs, reports affiliate 10TV. The staircase is made of glass.

Dress wearers need to avoid taking the stairs, according to Franklin County Judge Julie Lynch, who wears dresses under her robes almost every day.

"I wear dresses because that's my personal choice," Lynch told 10TV. "When you stand under the stairwell, you can see right up through them.”

She speculates that men, who didn’t take half the population into account, designed the stairs.

Attorney Lori Johnson was startled by the transparent stairs. She worries not only about stares, but also how many cell phones have cameras attached.

“The next thing you know, you’re on the internet,” Johnson said, according to 10TV. “It sounds like a lawsuit in the making.”

While security guards warn women about taking the stairs, it seems most are just hoping people will be mature about the situation.

"They hope people will be mature? That's not a solution," Lynch said to 10TV. "If we had mature people that didn't violate the law, we wouldn't have this building."

For a moment I thought I was reading an Onion article. This is national news?

You must be male. Yes, it is national news when tax dollars are spent on a staircase that many people cannot use.

It looks like they are concerned with the open riser as the tread appears to be opaque. Open riser stairs are used all the time, don't see the problem other than the users.

There must be some sort of problem that you can't see from the photo for there to be a problem. Simply climbing stairs shouldn't have to cause concern for anyone, anywhere

Great quote: "If we had mature people that didn't violate the law, we wouldn't have this building."

Whoever designed this stairway was obviously a product of the American educational system

The treads aren't glass, it's just the risers. There are millions of stairs just like this all over the world. I have stairs with out risers in my apartment and it was built in the 70's. This concept is nothing new. Why is this a problem now? If that no name judge is making a big stink about it, sand blast, frost, or paint the glass and be done with it. This isn't news worth be put on the main page..

I also love the fact that people actually think this is news and worth our time. Oh no! This is such a scandal. A man must have designed it. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Wait until the first cross-dresser wears a dress without panties and walks these stairs so everyone can look at their hairy balls and taint.

open risers were common for years, until made 'against code'

glass was a solution to it being open.

tons of old grandfathered modern stairways around

So....something that could be easily resolved in 10 minutes with a can of paint to the underside of the steps is now news.

I'm so with you on this one. So... you are having your security guards warn every female in a skirt or dress. How's about taking 2 hours of facilities time and just either install 'inserts' or paint them? Wow... that was difficult.

Judge please order to change the risers or paint over them, problem solved if these are the only staircase cost of pail of paint less than $100.

No, carpet can slip. Get paint and mix clean, fine sand in it, then paint over the glass. Repeat once a year.

Most apartment buildings and parks have open staircases. This is stupid. Just because the sides are made of glass idiots jump to conclusions.
