Glass staircase not dress friendly

For years, women across America have dealt with glass ceilings. But now, women in Ohio have a new problem - glass floors.

A $105 million courthouse opened in Franklin County, Ohio, on Monday, but the builders seemed to have forgotten one thing - the bottom of the stairs, reports affiliate 10TV. The staircase is made of glass.

Dress wearers need to avoid taking the stairs, according to Franklin County Judge Julie Lynch, who wears dresses under her robes almost every day.

"I wear dresses because that's my personal choice," Lynch told 10TV. "When you stand under the stairwell, you can see right up through them.”

She speculates that men, who didn’t take half the population into account, designed the stairs.

Attorney Lori Johnson was startled by the transparent stairs. She worries not only about stares, but also how many cell phones have cameras attached.

“The next thing you know, you’re on the internet,” Johnson said, according to 10TV. “It sounds like a lawsuit in the making.”

While security guards warn women about taking the stairs, it seems most are just hoping people will be mature about the situation.

"They hope people will be mature? That's not a solution," Lynch said to 10TV. "If we had mature people that didn't violate the law, we wouldn't have this building."

If you are going to place an officer to deal with the situation why not place one the other side of the staircase and tell men not to look up women's dresses.

Years ago at my workplace, the building had escalators that had mirrored glass on each side. Men used to stand right behind women and sneak peeks underneath their skirt/dress through the mirrored glass.. We made sure to stand in the middle of the escalator because the closer you were to the side, it was easier to peak. In fact, I work across the street from that building and the excalators haven't changed. lol.

I also worked in a building with escalator with mirrored chrome on each side. Let me assure you you can't see a thing. It just stopped short.

Neal...So, you've already tried to "see" what you could in the past with starcases like this? Another Weiner in the making?

I've never seen the appeal of something so closely connected to the armpit! Perhaps I was one of the few breast fed babies! Those that were formula babies, have all these boobie hang-ups!

Do the treads have a lip that extends over the previous tread to prevent a 90 degree view upwards between the treads?
I can see a womens concern if there is no restriction to a vertical view between the treads.

oh wow, watch the video. the steps aren't even see-through. just the vertical spaces between the steps, like thousands and thousands of other public staircases. this courthouse must be desperate for attention.

This is ridiculous. I work in a place that has no risers, just gaps between the stairs. Over 30 years, and not a single incident or a single complaint. Get a life, Franklin County Ohio . . .

*You* are ridiculous, Stephen. As I posted above, stairs without risers have some overlap. These stairs have none, so the view from below is wide open.

Just block off the vertical parts of the treads or part of them to the next one, problem solved.

Quick fix would be to apply a tranluscent glass film.

Exactly what I was thinking. I work for a sign company and we use etched glass vinyl all the time on glass windows to add privacy for our customers. It lets light through but distorts viewing through them.

That is actually a great idea!
Get a bunch of guys in utili-kilts walking up and down the stairs, pretty soon people will be afraid to look.

Weiner would climb the stairs wearing a kilt and no underwear!
