Top al Qaeda operative reported killed in Africa

A top al Qaeda operative in East Africa, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, was killed at a Somali checkpoint, a senior Kenyan official said Saturday. Mohammed was long sought in Somalia for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

"There's reason to believe this senior terrorist is dead," a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak on the record said Saturday. "He was killed, it appears, at a Somali police checkpoint in or around Mogadishu."

The commander of Somalia's government forces confirmed that two men driving through a checkpoint southwest of Mogadishu late Wednesday were killed when both opened fire on soldiers there.

One of the men was a foreigner and his identity is under investigation, Gen. Abdikarin Dhega Badans said.

    Quiet competence – that`s what I like about America under the President`s leadership.

    While the killing is reported at a evryday checkpoint, its not hard to image that is a cover story to preserve the confidentiality of what we may have learned from bin Laden`s stash.

    I find it odd that this terrorist eluded death for 13 years and then met his maker because he suddenly felt the urge to draw on a couple of cops at a Somali DUI checkpoint.

    We were pursing this guy and it got too hot for him makes more sense.

    I think the fallacy of the wimpy Democrat has been obliterated. Mr. President, I appreciate all you do.

    Next to fall – Moammar. Orchestrated by Mr. No-Drama himself while NATO fires the shot.

      @Pop
      They won't ever be defeated. That's why the premise of the War on Terror was preposterous. It's neverending. Its an ideology, not a people/country. Even if al queada is no more, there will be the Muslim Brotherhood or whatever new name they decide to call themselves. There will always be religious extremists-Muslim or otherwise.

    @gung hoe:
    People are aware that this was a Somalia deal, and not President Obama's.
    ObL, however, WAS President Obama's deal, and the sooner you give credit where credit is due, the better.

    The real threat isn't as much al qaeda as it is the muslim brotherhood now, the very people Obama has been backing in this "Arab Spring". If the Brotherhood manages to gain the foot hold they're so desperately seeking in Egypt and Libya then the entire middle east will be in jeopardy. You think it's bad now just wait, if they get in power Israel and Iran will be their first targets and the price of oil will skyrocket. Obama knows nothing about the real play that is going down over there.

    One can't help but to think under the Obama administration terrorist have been killed and not imprisoned for bogus reason due to pressure during the Bush/Cheney rein of hell.
