New York Senate approves same-sex marriage

[Update 4:52 a.m.] New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the state's marriage equality bill hours after it passed the Republican-controlled Senate on Friday night, making it the sixth state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage. Cuomo signed the bill into law after the legislature cleared the way to legalize same-sex marriage with a 33-29 vote, the first time a state Senate with a Republican majority has approved such a bill.

[Original post 11:21 p.m.] New York legislators cleared the last major hurdle to legalize same-sex marriage Friday when the state Senate followed the Assembly's lead in approving legislation to do so.

Earlier in the day, the Assembly passed a version of the bill that included an amendment about religious institutions. The Friday night vote in the Senate means the legislation's fate is now in the hands of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who proposed it.

The Senate vote came after lawmakers agreed on an amendment that would help protect religious institutions from potential lawsuits, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said.Demonstrators have gathered for days in Albany as state lawmakers pored over the details of the bill, which would help make New York the nation's sixth and largest state to legalize same-sex marriage.

The vote on the marriage measure, which the state Assembly passed June 15, was stalled in part by Republican concerns over protections for religious institutions against the potential for litigation.

Cuomo says the bill would grant same-sex couples equal rights to marry "as well as hundreds of rights, benefits and protections that are currently limited to married couples of the opposite sex."

Currently, five states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire - and the District of Columbia grant same-sex marriage licenses.

The passage of same-sex marriage laws faced a daunting history in the New York state legislature.

The Senate rejected a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in 2009 and has blocked the last three attempts by the state's lower house to get the proposed legislation signed into law.

Although New York currently does not grant same-sex marriages, a 2008 appellate court ruling upheld the right of couples to have their same-sex marriages recognized if they are performed elsewhere.

You're right. The conservatives who want to marry their dog or their sister to make a point are just being "friendly".

Hey, reason finally wins over religion. Gay marriage legalized in New York, and I have yet to see god's wrath manifest itself... who'da thunk it? Next up: repealing Prop. 8

I'm straight. I would be very happy for all my gay friends if they lived in New York. My Catholic family...probably not so happy. But most of them will come around and adjust and probably years from now, wonder what they were so het up about.

Hey, what's the difference between the bible and a gossip magazine? There isn't one. They're both useless publications full of conjecture with no proof to support themselves. And somehow millions of ignorant people read them and take everything to heart.

If you can provide everyone here with a rational, reasonable, and logical (read: backed by scientific proof) argument about how gay marriage will somehow lead to the deterioration of society and downfall of the planet, then by all means, do so.

      We'll be here waiting.

YES!!! The last great shiny object that keeps the GOP from actually fixing the country and saving it from brain dead liberals has arrived . It is a great day and hopefully all other states pass it as well and then abortion is next , and then the liberal party becomes extinct because all that is left is basic common fiscal sense for the GOP . I am a conservative and I can not possibly applaud new york harder than I am right now.

      Ben,
Wake up. Some guy who shared your prejudices wrote that. Perhaps you didn't get the memo. The Bible was written by old men, not God. And, BTW, those guys were probably writing that line to pass a hint to that few of their fellow clergy, who were lying down with young boys.

So Ben here is the deal – you don't have to marry a dude. It is completely optional. Just don't presume to tell other people how to live – now that is an abomination.

No not "everything else is okay," really. Polygamy, possibly could gain some support, as it involves consenting adults – and it is in the bible, if that's any consolation. The other things you mentioned involve situations where adult consent would not be possible. However, if it's "your thang," you have a right to fight for it but I don't think you will get much support from gays, straights or pretty much, anyone else but maybe, some weirdos hanging out in dark basements.

It is not sick and unnatural.
I'm a straight man, and there is nothing about a gay man that disgusts me of makes me want to make love to him.
I you think gays are sick and unnatural, YOU need to seek professional help, because there is something wrong with YOU, not with "them."

Gay marriage has been legal across Canada for seven years and we aren't having this debate, nor is Spain, Mass, Iowa and so on.

Quit your fear mongering. There is a distinct difference between what two loving and consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom and child predators. Polygamy is similarly exploitative as it is almost polyarchy, amounting in practice to a form of discrimination/exploitation that views/treats women as inferior.
