Judge blocks Georgia law targeting illegal immigrants

A federal judge in Atlanta, Georgia, has blocked a controversial state law cracking down on illegal immigrants from taking effect until the broader legal issues are resolved.

Monday's order by Judge Thomas Thrash, which CNN has obtained, temporarily prevents enforcement of the law, which would penalize those who transport or harbor illegal immigrants.

The case is Georgia Latino Alliance v. Deal. The law, known as HB 87, was scheduled to go into effect Friday.

More rights? What an idiotic statement… That is really too dumb to waste time dissecting.

Why do people feel they have to block this. This is doing nothing but letting illegals dictate how things go in OUR country.....they wouldn't like it if we dictated how things operated in their country, so what makes them so special to be able to do it here

And the illegals are handed another undeserved victory by spinless liberals. WHO will finally stand up and say, "Enough is enough!" Or do we need another civil war to make a point?

Penalizing those who transport or harbor illegal immigrants seems like a straightforward thing to do. The only people who would have a problem with a state cracking down on illegals would be the illegals, their family, friends or these ridiculous illegal rights activists. That a state can not defend itself from this invasion which is a financial drain and public burden is ludicrous. Idiots!!!!

Hold the farmers that hire these illegals accountable because it's the same as shipping jobs to China....the only difference is this cheap labor is right here. The results are the same. The alternative of even higher food prices isn't attractive to any of us.

The basis of the judge's decision – merely forcing the state to clarify two provisions of its law – is whether the state is stepping on federal toes. Transporting over state lines is a federal law. An altered version of the law will eventually go into effect.

Better than that lock up the "legitimate business owners" who provide the economic incentive for them to be here.

The US is a republic, not a democracy. Time to learn about how this country is governed. There is a reason why we have representation and checks and balances - so that the will of the majority cannot take rights away from the minority. Plain and simple.

I just don't get it, the federal government won't do anything about the illegal immigration in the country, so when the states try to tackle it–the judges block it. Do the poliiticans even listen to the "legal" citizens in this country. I'm tired of trying to find the English directions, I'm tired of pushing #1 for English. I often wonder what those poor soldiers that died fighting the Mexicans for this country only to turn around and give it right back to them–piece by piece. Instead of our soldiers "guarding" us against some terrorist thousands miles away, why not bring them home to protect our borders?

Died fighting the mexicans? You mean stealing land from mexicans by buying out a corrupt mexican government?

Great idea! We can use the East German model and shoot them as they crawl across the border to try to find work. If employers did not HIRE illegals, there would be no problem at all.

Get this. It's vote buying, pure and simple. One day, sooner than we think, we will have given away more than we have. Even the libs will finally realize that being in power of a bankrupt, welfare nation is not where they want to be. Of course, it will then be too late.

I wonder how thos poor Mexicans feel being thown out of thier own country and when they try to return are called Illegal

      June 27, 2011 at 4:25 pm | Report abuse |
    • Really??

@Edgar – There was no vote buying. All America did was annex a soveign nation that asked to be annexed in the first place. The Republic of Texas won it's freedom from Mexico in 1836, the same way Mexico won their independence from Spain. Of course more people would know that if we were allowed to celebrate San Jacinto Day like illegal aliens are protected and in some places encouraged to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. And for those that say they should be able to celebrate their independence, pick up a history book, Cinco de Mayo is a very minor holiday in Mexico to celebrate their single victory in a war that resulted in them being occupied by France. There is only one way to solve the Illegal Alien problem, take away the reason they come here, punish the business so bad that the hiring of a single illegal alien would hurt their bottomline more then hiring 100 would add to it. And before anyone else jumps up to defend the illegal aliens for not doing anything wrong, there very name, "Illegal Alien" means they've already committed a crime. It doesn't matter if they committed that crime yesterday or 50 years ago. If someone breaks into your house, steals a bunch of money, uses that money to start a successful business; bottom line is that they still stole. One more reason to get criminals in empty suits out of office like Eric Holder. How is it that we live in a country where our top law enforcement official approves a federal and international crimes to catch a few people breaking the very law that he authorized his department to violate worse then the criminals. That's like establishing an international drug trafficing ring to catch the kid selling a joint to his buddy.

Why even bother having laws anymore? Liberal judges will just strike them down when they don't agree.

Liberal judges……have you noticed the 5-4 right wing tilt in the US Supreme Court? Give me a brake and find some different straw man to denigrate (If the words are too big, find a dictionary).

By the way, many more Federal judges have been appointed by Republican administrations than Democratic ones….

Barry, maybe you should find a dictionary and quit lecturing people until you educate yourself. Shameful.

Barry From Wisconsin, you want to talk about strawmen? The Supreme Court has an odd number of justices. That means, by definition, the Supreme Court can never not have a "tilt," as you put it, because there can never be an equal number of liberal and conservative justices. So any talk of a "tilt," as if that were something unthinkable, is logically ridiculous. You get a further F for logic anyway. You imply that the conservative bloc on the court is somehow perverting justice because they generally, but not always, vote together. If you condemn the conservative bloc for voting together, logically you must also condemn the liberal bloc for generally voting together, otherwise you're simply an irrelevant hypocrite. Either it's ok for judges to vote based on their personal political ideology, or it's not. It can't be wrong for just one side (surprise surprise, the side you personally happen to disagree with) to vote based on politics but not the other.

      Sigh…..I did misspell break (brake).

I love it when pseudo-intellectual right-wingers try to denigrate a position that differs from their own. By tilt, I meant that 5-4 right wing decisions are the norm in the US Supreme Court. I hope you are happy when the selling of America (by permitting unfettered corporate contributions…wait, that might be construed to be bribery) complete the income/wealth distribution in the USA.

I don’t care what kind of spin you put on this, by blocking immigration laws politicians are proving that they want illegal immigrants in this country. The republicans like the free labor and the democrats want the liberal votes. End of story. This country will fall apart within 50 years.

Excellent decision. Deportation solves nothing, and would be extremely expensive for taxpayers. Immigrants would only come back again. Its time for broad immigration reform from the federal government.

I think you could do it for minimal cost and benefit from the process as well. Chain them all together and make them walk back to Mexico while picking up trash along the roads on their way back. The further north they move, the more grueling the walk will be. If you suck in from over sees, use the garbage you collected to make a raft and float back to where you came from.

Stay in your country or come to the US LEGALLY!!!!!

Edgar, I don't think you get it. While we do need immigration reform, leaving the current 14 million illegals here is not an option that legal citizens can live with and NOT fair to immigrants that have followed the legal process. once more and more States get these laws passed, there will be less and less places for illegals to go. I have nothing against illegals, I just don't want to pay their taxes for them. so sent them to the next state to deal with until the Fed's get their act together.

This is far from over. This decsion by this federal judge will reach the Supreme Court and has a good possibility of being struck down. Don't forget the Supreme Court did overrule and find parts of the Arizona law perfectly legal.
