Rhode Island legislature passes same-sex civil union bill

Less than a week after New York became the nation's sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage, Rhode Island state lawmakers on Wednesday voted in favor of a bill that permits civil unions between gay and lesbian couples.

The measure, which passed the state Senate by a count of 21-16, is widely seen as a compromise intended to provide same-same couples with added rights and benefits, while also preventing an expanded legal definition of marriage.

The legislation, which passed overwhelmingly in the state's lower house on May 19, affords same-sex couples a host of new state tax breaks, health-care benefits and greater ease of inheritance.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an independent, is expected to sign the bill into law, according to his spokesman, Michael Trainor. If signed, the law would take effect on July 1, making Rhode Island the fifth state in the country to allow civil unions between same-sex couples.

The thread was about beauty. I was talking about performers, all dead, who were or weren't beautiful.
    I am really "JIF."
The others were fun and games.
I brought them out of the closet because I was challenged on this board with, "who else have you been."
When I describe Joey, it's true.
However, I am not at all hedonistic. Surely you don't think that!

    I am NOT Ellis-Panama.
He is legion, and there is one real one.
I played him about 3 times in this scene to fill out my story.
All his anal compulsion–that's somebody else, or several of them.

We're all a bit hedonistic & full of mischief, though, which is OK as long as it's all fun & games & no1 gets hurt! I'm Swedish, we've been around a while, so not much freaks me out! It tickles me that you're all these other personalities, & coming "out" about it (on the appropriate blog)! Are you sure you're not an actor? Funneee!!

@Kmat. Yes, JIFFy mentioned being a pianist. I used to give Joey lessons. Ellis was there. Ask him.

    It's a beautiful day here.
I've got to hit the gym early–it's arms day, my least favorite body part–then work till 8:30 PM.
I'm the real JIF now. Everything I say as JIF is compulsively true. As for everybody else, watch out.

    @ fernace:
I was joking about my not being hedonistic: I'm terribly hedonistic, and anhedonia is a symptom of depression.
I'm also very disciplined about work: I could live in jail, on bread and water, if the work required it.
I play music for the artistic experience first, but I also love "stuff."
I practice in the work clothes a custodial engineer would wear–no, worse.

Civil unions are a perfect example of “separate but equal” thinking and separate but equal is against the law. Civil unions are only acceptable if the government gets out of the "marriage" business altogether and makes civil unions the only alternative for all Americans.
