A divided federal appeals court has struck down Michigan's ban on consideration of race and gender in college admissions.
The issue is likely to renew the national political and legal debate over affirmative action, which the Supreme Court could be poised to resolve in coming months.
The 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals on Friday concluded in a 2-1 ruling that the voter-approved ban on "preferential treatment" at state colleges and universities was unconstitutional, and "alters Michigan's political structure by impermissibly burdening racial minorities."

You're exactly right. That is why they fail consistently on firefighter tests, police tests, sat scores, iq tests, act, vocational tests. It is consistent across the board. There is also a direct correlation between the average iq of a society and their level of advancement. Africa is living in the stone age– you would think that if they were as smart as whites, there would be at least some out of the many countries on that continent who are industrialized. Yet, there aren't any, except S Africa where whites made it thriving under apartheid. Now that that is ended, it is falling apart fast. On the same token, look at all the white countries in the world. Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Us, they are the most advanced. In fact, so much so that all the blacks and other minorites from all over the world flock to live in them, and the white population carries their weight and absorbs the costs associated with having them. They can thank whites for inventing the cell phone, radio, tv, car, plane and train as well as medical advancments that have improved life in Africa.
Once you have stolen most all countries resources, you should be able create a hell of an economy!

I teach at the University level also: and I totally agree with some previous posts. Most minorities are not capable of being educated nearly as fast as their Asian / White counterparts. This not a racial statement; it is however the truth.

I completely agree with you. Statistics show that white and Asian students achieve much higher test scores in reading, math, and the sciences than other races. It makes no sense for a white or Asian student who has achieved so much to be discriminated against in favor of someone from another race who has achieved less.

This isn't a matter of race but IMO a matter of family. Strong families promote/encourage education. It is deemed valuable. My Chinese friends/associates seem to have a definite inclination toward pushing their kids' education

There are a lot of studies suggesting that people with darker skin are dumber. The darker your skin the dumber you are it's just a fact.

Racism is nothing without power. Discrimination is prejudice couple with power. Discrimination was the reason for affirmative action. It was implemented to right hundreds of years of discrimination. So after forty or so years I guess to you that's enough huh?
OK, here's the reality.... Son of rich white alumnus with a generous donation history and graduation from an elite prep school gives the student an easy slide into the freshman class even if the grades are mediocre and the other credentials are uninspiring. That's OK, because that's what has been going on for years - the "old buddy system."

Good schools have learned to cast their net more broadly, looking for strong students from undistinguished schools in poorer neighborhoods. With financial aid and some coaching, they often become successful students.
Yeah, because all white students are the children of millionaires. Forget the child of a poor farmer who earned a 4.0 GPA, did extra-curriculars, worked a night job, and the whole smash, but ended up being rejected by some university with affirmative action that chose to accept a black or Hispanic student with a 3.2 GPA who did not much else in the meantime.

No, you misunderstand.
What we're talking about here is letting in people in spite of their low test scores to boost the number of the "under represented."
Instead of helping to combat racism, it encourages it. A group targeted for affirmative action will have to contend with the now TRUE assertion that, on average, their scores and achievements weren't good enough to make it in on their own.
Requirements should be the same regardless of race. It shouldn't even be a box you have to fill out on an application.
Edward, do you have a particular student in mind? Because your hallucinations don't match reality very well. Mediocre black students aren't chosen over stellar white students who have overcome adversity. It simply doesn't work that way. Some black and hispanic students with middling grades might be chosen over white students who ALSO have middling grades. But your hard-working white farmer may be given a special exception even WITH mediocre grades if he can show that he added something to the student body.

After five generations here, there are several countries that I am descended from ... all European, and all white, but I can't say if one is more appropriate than another one. Do you have a formula that 5 generations of white people from different white countries in and around Europe to determine which one to go back to?

are there any studies/research/data that describes the results of affirmative action at the University level? Do the kids usually do well once they get into the school, or do the majority end up dropping out. How does their success once they get there compare to their White/Asian counterparts? Just curious -any one know?
It is politically incorrect to compile those results. It is illegal to present those results. It is a HATE CRIME to publish those results. You would be hunted down, ostracized, jailed, and all your work would be considered heretic for even stating that question.
If this really goes through, the University of Michigan system can count on many potential students leaving the state to study elsewhere to protest the reverse discrimination, as has already been done in the past. In time, the U of M system will really come to regret the decision once they figure out nobody besides some minorities want to study in their universities. Once those students go to study elsewhere, there is a good chance they will also end up working in those other states, which will benefit those states, and harm Michigan's economy. Overall, it is a socially and economically stupid decision that lacks in common sense.
Money.cnn.com has articles on the mass exodus from the state of Michigan. This does not have any relation to policy, it has to do with lost tax revenue, and the collapse of the Education.
Follow the money, just don't speak of it or the AACP will hunt you down.
i graduated from columbia university a few years ago, and i was in several classes filled with primarily black people. i was astounded by the low caliber of the class relative to the other classes i was in, and was simply dismayed with the way the professor completely overlooked the laziness of all of the black students who spent their time during class chatting with friends on gchat and facebook, while the rest of us white students worked incredibly hard. i wanted my money's worth given the exorbitatnt tuition i was paying, and sadly, i didn't always get that thanks to the blacks and affirmative action destroying the integrity of the once-sacred classroom.
Who paid for that?
I am dismayed that such a poor writer was admitted to Columbia, white or black. You should have worked harder.
