The first step out of bed could have been a big one.
A woman in Guatemala City reports that a sinkhole, 40 feet deep and almost 3 feet across, opened under her bed Monday.
"When we heard the loud boom we thought a gas canister from a neighboring home had exploded, or there had been a crash on the street," Inocenta Hernandez, 65, said in an Agence France-Presse report.
"We rushed out to look and saw nothing. A gentleman told me that the noise came from my house, and we searched until we found it under my bed," AFP quotes Hernandez as saying.
The area is prone to sinkholes.
In May 2010, a sinkhole about 60 feet across and 100 feet deep opened in the area, swallowing buildings and an intersection.
In 2007, another sinkhole claimed three lives in Barrio San Antonio in Guatemala City.
Hernandez told AFP that she is thankful the surprise under her bed wasn't any bigger.
"Thank God there are only material damages, because my grandchildren were running around the house, into that room and out to the patio," AFP quoted her as saying.

If they can afford good vinyl tile we should not be sending them aid. They are like the peoples of Somalia. Pretending to be poor when they have everything.
the picture shows a brick lined well
It does indeed look brick-lined, and it looks like a well. Whatever it is, it surely doesn't look like a sinkhole.
So , are you being dumb for entertainment or because that is your real self ?
guellermo– I agree. Looks like they built the house with no foundation right over the old well.. Oh well...
Congratulations, that's the most ignorant thing I've read in days.Seriously? Are you for real?
Seriously? The people of Somalia "have everything"? Dude, you are seriously deluded.
haha
If you use use an ounce of common sense you would think after seeing a worker there they probably cut the hole with tools to clear broken tile to inspect the hole. I am not saying the photo is real I am just asking people to think.... Everyone is saying holes dont open in circles like that. Well yes they do. The layers you see that look like tile are really layers of earth. The only thing I know from this pic is I would never live there. Wow.
That is not a brick lined well. I examined the photo closely and it is just the layers of dirt, the white appears to be shell.
So is this one also a fake? http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/06/01/guatemala.sinkhole/index.html Are all pictures of sinkholes fakes because this one sure looks a lot like the one in the picture. Here is another view of the one from the home. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/slideshow/ALeqM5hEAjEe8vStGMOiswAxDcxXi_d_DQ?docId=CNG.832a4bd5d343e4861527751b5e0d9c50.ad1&index=0 Both of these links are available from within the article if anyone had bothered to look. Just saying.
I lay tile for a living and when tile breaks it breaks jagged. This tile has been cut with a tile cutter it is TOO perfectly round as is the hole. THE hole did NOT just open on its on, that was there all along as the tile is proof
Don't be a silly git; the obviously smoothed out the rim of the hole. Or do you think it's wise to run rope over a jagged edge..? That photo is NOT from just after it happened, I doubt they had lights and ropes handy -.-' . Insta-judgment by those NOT on the scene is doomed to failure.
Jack – you win. Bozobub is just plain dumb.
ahahahah....they better clena those jagged edges so they can place the MEASURING TAPE down the hole...derrr
This is a bogus piece. You expect us to believe a perfectly circular hole like that is not photo shopped? I faaart in your general direction!!!!
Sorry, you're completely wrong. Or did you not notice the rope and lights set up in the hole? Do YOU think it's wise to run rope over a jagged edge? Or to walk around the edge, not knowing where the hole actually starts..? If not, then silence, please.
I have to say, I agree that they may have cleaned up the edges so the rope wouldn't cut on jagged edges. But, I've also gotta say this thing looks badly photoshopped. Look at the lighting. Do you notice how there is no fade in the amount of light on the floor? Also, with the amount that the person is lit up, I would expect to see the floor a lot better as well. Definitely a fake.
Well, this one is for the books. Never seen a PERFECTLY round sink hole before. Exactly 3 foot in diameter. Sounds like BS to me.
CNN Writer: Please at least indicate in which country and which state ythe city Guatemala City is.
Are you serious? GUATEMALA City is in the country of GUATEMALA in Central America!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Is in the State of Anemia, Republic of Sandalia
Why does it look like a tunnel lined with bricks?
It 's a durg courrier tunnel. No drogas!
Looks like a well to me.
This has to be an old well that was covered up many years ago and forgotten about. Look at the brick lining the circular hole and it is mortar'd. This is either a fake or like I said a forgotten well.
Clearly, they need to rethink the mining of groundwater in Guatamala City.
This looks like a well to me. Look at the photo – it looks like the walls of the 'hole' are brick.
Wow, so many possible jokes from the headline alone ! What, no one ? Come on people, CNN is begging for it.
It isn't a well. That is what sinkholes look like in Guatamala City.
Seriously people, stop saying this story is fake because the hole is perfectly round. THEY ROUNDED IT AFTER IT HAPPENED. What's so hard to understand about that? They're trying to lower a rope and lights into a hole, you don't do that on sharp edges. It's OBVIOUS that they rounded it off and smoothed it out. Jesus people are dumb sometimes.
I doubt they would round out a sinkhole. the vibrations from sawing alone would probably damage it more. You fill in sink holes, and even so... why would you not have/take/use a picture from BEFORE the rounding? This just looks silly..
This photo has been altered–no question about it. The "hole," and the little bits of debris at the top edge of the hole as well as the man, appear to be "floating" above the tile work because of the fact that the light from the hole is not falling onto the tiles at all.
think people athough i agree the hole is too perfact. the light is lower than the floor therefor canot shine on the floor . hello
that photo is the actual sink hole in being repoprted on.
