President Barack Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen certified Friday that the U.S. military is prepared to accept openly gay and lesbian service members, and that doing so will not harm military readiness, according to the White House.
Under a bill passed last year that set up a process for repealing the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy, all three men needed to sign a certification that confirms the military's ability to accept the integration of openly gay and lesbian troops.
A 60-day waiting period will now begin before the repeal is fully implemented.

So what's Obama supposed to do about the attack in Oslo? What does this have to do with gays in the military? I don't like everything about Obama. But I'm tired of commentators taking every opportunity to bash, even when it's totally unrelated. Both the right and left do it. Why can't we have a civil conversation about issues?
United States can no longer be the policemen of the world. Norway is very capable of handling the problem.
I've been searching, but thus far have not been able to find out how much time the president spent on this today. Do you have some inside info that the was ignoring the Norway attack to spend time on this? I'm hoping a president can handle more than 1 thing at a time, but maybe you know something I don't. I think discrimination is wrong. Let us all not forget that, not too far in our recent past, women couldn't vote and African-Americans were considered less than one person. For all of those on here that think they know what Christianity is all about. Know this, Christ died for our sins so that we could have eternal life. You can choose to believe it or not believe it but I will tell you one certain thing. Tomorrow is promised to no one. All these people blaspheming the name of Christ and rejecting him are self righteous and think they know everything about anything. However, one day everyone will have to be responsible for the decision they made for accepting or rejecting Christ. Hopefully people will open their hearts to the Lord.
How do we 'know this'? We may 'believe this', but I don't think we can know this enough to tell others this is it and nothing else.

You served right along with many G-ays and Le-sbi-ans and probably did not even know it and embraced them as your brothers and sisters for the fine work they did and the manner by which they deported themselves in the military. So, don't show your stu-pidity and ig-norance by saying caustic things about those who have done you no personal harm. Learn to live with people different from you just as America is learning to live with people who inter-marry with different races. Don't be so narrow-minded! It is those who show how broad-minded they are that other people have good respect for.

Maybe all service members should have voted instead of being told they had to except it.
They don't care. Training has been remarkably a nonissue. It hasn't even affected recruiting. Most of them grew up knowing gay people, even know already people they serve alongside who are gay. All the parade of horribles people trotted out would happen have been a no show. And life goes on.

Boy are you BEHIND times, Glad! The military people Did Vote and the vast majority, about 3/4ths of them said it was a Non-Issue of G-ays serving openly with them! And why should it be? Just because guys had to serve with others whose skin was of a different color in the fifties and had a problem with it? Many did have a problem with that. But this is the year 2011 and we would have hoped people would have finally gotten past their big-otry and hate-ful-ness towards others who are different from them. You, unfortunately show that there is still some work to be done!
