Thick, green algae covers 200 square miles of Yellow Sea

Almost 200 square miles (500 square kilometers) of the Yellow Sea off China are covered by a massive bloom of green algae, according to a report from China's Xinhua news service.

The bloom has spread to almost 7,400 square miles (19,050 square kilometers) in total and is expected to grow, Xinhua reported, citing the North China Sea Marine Forecasting Center of State Oceanic Administration.

The algae bloom threatens marine life as it sucks oxygen from the water although the algae itself is not poisonous, according to the Xinhua report.

Researchers don't know what causes the massive algae blooms, first seen in the Yellow Sea in 2007.

Tons of the green algae had to be removed in 2008 to make way for sailing events at the Summer Olympics.

"We don't know where it originated and why it's suddenly growing so rapidly," Bao Xianwen from the Qingdao-based Ocean University of China, told the China Daily earlier this month. "It must have something to do with the change in the environment, but we are not scientifically sure of the reasons."

That could make enough BIO fuel to last years! Its mother earth trying to tell us to get away from crude oil.

the conversion is terrible, it produces about 90% algee meal and 10% oil for biofuel. The meal maybe high protien, but you will need to get the animals to eat it for that to be economic.

A lot of answers here (or should I say more questions here??):
    http://richardmknight.wordpress.com/2011/04/06/chinas-famed-pearl-river-under-denim-threat/
    EXCERPTS:
"But what blue-jean clad consumers everywhere probably don’t realize is the process by which denim is made may be poisoning China’s water supply."
"The Pearl River has sustained Chinese civilization for ages, but over the last few decades, civilization has not been kind to the river. It has become a dumping ground for debris, floating among massive algae blooms and even pig carcasses. Agricultural runoff is one of the river’s biggest threats, next to industrial pollution."
Google JUST water pollution in China and you'll think twice about the products you purchase/consume!!
    REALLY SAD.

There is so much stuff running from the rivers and water areas into the ocean from China, soon the whole coastal area will be covered with algae. Our oceans have become the septic tanks of the world and will become huge mudholes if we don't do something. we should remember one third of our oxygen comes from the life in the sea.

Wonder if anyone has checked the nitrate levels in the water. China isn't the only place extraordinary algal blooms occur...eventually tied to poor water quality due to pollution, over development, and human interference in the natural flow of the water.

Likely caused by eutrophication...additional nutrients added to the water, algae use carbon nutrients and reproduce at remarkably high rates; water becomes anoxic; marine life dies.

Decades of ignoring enviromental standards (since they have none) are going to catch up with china. they can outproduce everyone else because they think productivity before impact. No wonder their economy is groing so fast. Wait until they have no potable water, and can't grow anything. their air quality is already the worst on the planet.

I'm surprised they haven't figured out how to incorporate algae into a dish on a menu since they eat almost anything anyway.

We must pray to our Father, and our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
and we have to be our brothers keeper. In Love all things are possible. through Jesus christ.
Jesus Loves all of us,no matter what we have done or doing he still loves us in spite of all our wrong doings. We must let him show us the way to him. that is the way we can start LIVING not just live day to day.Living life with Jesus is better than life living us.
