Libyan rebels claim successes in offensive near Tunisia

Rebels in western Libya are claiming big successes after a major offensive was launched early Thursday.

Rebel commanders say their forces have captured five towns and surrounded a sixth in the plains below the Nafusa mountain range.

Hundreds of rebels moved from their mountain positions at dawn, heavier weapons leading the way with lighter armed fighters following, initially encountering fierce resistance from the loyalists of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Col. Jumma Ibrahim, spokesman for the Military Council for the western mountain region, said several major battles had taken place before the towns were secured.

In America – The Homeless go without eating.
In America – The Elderly go without needed medicines.
In America – The Mentally ill go without treatment.
In America – Our Troops go without proper equipment.
In America – Our Veterans go without benefits they were promised.
Yet we donate billions to other countries before helping our own first.

@Randall: don't despair, government does indeed take care of domestic needs first. Foreign aid is a sliver of the pie. Foreign aid is funded because our nation ultimately benefits from it, else it foreign aid would have ended long ago. Rich nations (and ours is still the world's richest nation by far) aid poorer ones because, beyond the humanitarian benefits, it helps to stabilize those nations and bring us greater influence in them. This strengthens our national security, so we all benefit.

Unfortunately, any American politician who tries to solve those problems is labeled a socialist.

We spend TRILLIONS at home. Rememberthat a trillion is a thousand times a billion. We spend thousands of times more money on the subjects you lists. For example, they are spending more just to add a lane to a freeway near my house then they spend on Libya. A billion sounds like a lot of money but it amounts to less then $3 per US resident. The US government spends thousands and thousands of billions. If you were to draw a pie chart of the US budget Libya would be an invisable sliver. MOST of the money DOES go to medical care for old people and other social programs

Quite true Randall, quite true. The politicians in Washington are nothing but a bunch of highly paid thugs who are looking out for themselves. These goons want to balance the budget and increase the unnecessary military spending at the same time!

@Helen: The leaders leading the nation in Washington. We elect people who we believe represent our points of view, so we get the government that we deserve. There are people with extreme points of view, so they vote for politicians who share those points of view, and sometimes those politicians win elections. As a result, we have Tea Party politicians who are determined to keep government from functioning. Fortunately,we have elections every two years. Ideally, voters will elect or re-elect politicians who help government to function and will not re-elect those who spend their time trying to figure out new ways to make sure that nothing worthwhile gets done.

Okay, perhaps everyone should go back to the 911 blog and see how well our federal government takes care of us.
