Overheard on CNN.com: Hollywood is out of fresh ideas

Comment of the day:

“Word is that Sanjaya Malakar is being considered for the Swayze role while Baby may be played by Paris Hilton. It will be titled ‘Dirty Dancing, the Nightmare.’ - Jeebus2011

Don’t mess with Dirty Dancing

Almost 24 years after the original was released, a movie studio has announced plans for a remake of the 1980s classic "Dirty Dancing," which starred Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze. The film’s original choreographer, Kenny Ortega, will direct the remake, which will include songs from the 1960s, the original movie and new pieces.

But if Ortega is interested in gauging public interest, he should read comments from CNN.com readers; they unequivocally don’t like the idea of a remake.

wetcougar said, “Please do not remake this film. There will never be another Johnny Castle or Baby!”

Tilda said, “NOBODY puts the original ‘Dirty Dancing’ in a corner.”

BeachDiva said, “To me, they will be dishonoring Patrick Swayze's memory. This was HIS movie, along with Jennifer’s, and to redo it is terrible! Would they redo ‘Singing in the Rain?’ Or ANY of Fred Astaire's movies? Awful idea."

sanesight responded, “They probably would redo 'Gone With the Wind' starring JLo and Ben Affleck if they thought they could get anyone but those two to pay for tickets.”

WhoKnewIt said, “There will NEVER be another 'Dirty Dancing'....and Swayze could never be replaced in that role....I still miss him....”

coldspider said, “And my opinion is...they shouldn't TOUCH this movie. Remake it for a new generation? How about the new generation can just appreciate it for what it was. It's a great movie and should not be touched.”

LAVA1931 said, “Sad that most of Hollywood can't come up with original ideas anymore.”

newlysmom said, “Why can't these writers/producers just think of something new ... are they that short of imagination? This movie belongs to Patrick Swayze, leave it alone.”

Guest said, “Hollywood is run by businessmen. They see a proven money winner and don't care about anything else. How many reboots of Spiderman, Hulk, and Superman will they make?”

KtinME said, “Good luck with that. Unless they keep it in the early sixties, when the music was great and families actually took vacations together and many teenagers were still innocent, it'll be just another Britney Spears video.”

DeathToZaon said, “I plan to remake ‘Casablanca’ with Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus.”

sharky66 responded, “I will do a remake of ‘Gone With The Wind’ starring Lindsay Lohan and The Rock.”

BeachDiva said, “There are some movies that should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER be re-made and this is one of them.”

Support for Braydon

One of the men who died in the Chinook helicopter crash last Saturday was Army Chief Warrant Officer Bryan Nichols, the helicopter’s pilot. He was also the father of Braydon Nichols who, upset that his dad hadn’t been mentioned in news reports, made an iReport post that went viral online and on media outlets.

His post and subsequent stories about it on CNN.com drew hundreds of comments from readers, all showing their support for the brave 10-year-old.

Spellheck said, “I am a veteran myself from Kansas, and the son of a retired Army Warrant Officer. My condolences go out to this young boy and his family. His father is a hero and obviously a wonderful dad. I cannot express the sorrow I feel for him. Please let this be a lesson that everyone in the military is of the same family, it doesn't matter what your job is; everyone is just as important. ... My prayers are with this young boy and his family.”

ahyun said, “You look so much like your father. His spirit lives on inside of you. Thank you for being brave enough to speak out to make sure that hero is not forgotten. My heart is with you little one.”

BlueTexan said, “My father passed when I was in the fourth grade and though I never really got over his loss, I still think of him and am proud of his service in the Air Force during World War II. Stay strong young man, because you too are a hero to us all.”

KindnessKing said, “Dear Braydon, please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of your father. Your story really touched me. I am sorry that you are going through this. America owes a debt of gratitude to your dad and all those who bravely fight for our rights. We also owe a debt of gratitude to you, big guy, for making us all realize that there were more than just soldiers aboard that Chinook helicopter; there were people who were loved, people who will be missed. You make us ALL proud. God Bless."

ArmyWife02 said, “Dear Braydon, my heart hurts for you and your family. I am an Army Aviation wife and I am so proud of my pilot and to see this makes tribute is amazing!!! Keep smiling when you can, laughing when you need it and keep your father's love in your heart forever.”

mbsnj said, “Braydon, I wanted to make sure you know that we, as Americans, know exactly who was onboard that helicopter. SEAL or not, your father was just as great a hero, and a selfless man who gave his life for his country. We are all saddened by your loss, but are so proud of who he was to you, your family and to our country. Thank you for showing us a picture of this brave man.”

fourbuds said, “Your dad did his job exactly as a hero does, quietly, without fanfare. We are proud of you, standing as a very brave man supporting his father. We are proud of your father. Your dad is a brave man, who was helping out his comrades as his final act. And he loves you just as he did before; he's just flying with the other angels now.”

Victoriausa “I am so sorry for your loss and hope you know that you have the prayers and thanks of millions of Americans. My family and I are sending our love to you and your family.”

dlfavinger said, “Braydon, my name is Dionna and I am Calvin King's wife. Calvin served with your father out of the Hays unit. I just want to take a moment to tell you how proud I am of you for speaking up about your father being recognized. You are right; he should be individually recognized, just like the rest of the Navy Seals Team. The world should know the names of those who have sacrificed their lives so we can continue to live the way we do today. Your dad was so proud of you and I know it would have put a smile on his face to know that you took this stand for him. Your father will be missed terribly.”

lpabf said, “Braydon, I'm retired from the Navy and I also wondered why no one mentioned the pilot and crew. You are a strong young man. Please continue to be that way. I am so sorry for your loss. Your father and everyone deserves to be mentioned.”

CRierson said, “At one time I was assigned to the 158th in a different state, and for a short time, I was not an Army aviator, but knew many. I've also known SEALs and many other special operators. Your dad, and ALL Army aviators are among the bravest men and women to serve our country on a daily basis.”

Guest said, “My heart breaks for this young man, and I'm proud of the actions he's taken on behalf of his Dad's remembrance. It sounds already like Braydon is the kind of son his dad would be proud of. His dad may be gone physically, but he'll live on in Braydon's heart.

Swimmer makes it half way

Endurance swimmer and record-holder Diana Nyad arrived in Florida Tuesday morning after having to abandon her 103-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. Ocean swells, intense shoulder pain and asthma proved to be too much, though she did complete half the distance in 29 hours.

CNN.com readers commended her efforts despite her inability to finish.

kngavl said, “She's no less of a champ for trying! Keep it up!”

truthdealer said, “Most people posting here probably couldn't even swim for one hour straight let alone 29. Factor in her age and it's remarkable what she did.”

F0st3rs said, “She deserves admiration. Even going as far as she did is incredible. If it were easy more people would have done it or even tried to do it. She should still be proud of herself. Hoorah for her.”

SemperFi2 said, “I'm glad she is okay. This is a story of a champion. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. But she gave it her all. THAT's what counts.”

DAISHI said, “Blows my mind she got as far as she did.”

Losiha1 said, “Chasing your dream and taking a risk to fail in front of the public eye takes great courage... Diana, thanks for being who you are, I was inspired following your endeavor.”

Yaldah1 said, “I don’t know about you, but that is WAY better than I could do! When I go to the gym, if I do laps in the pool for an hour, I am VERY pleased with myself. God bless.

I could have told everyone that they ran out of ideas! The movies coming out of Hollywod are lacking to say the least. I know I won't watch it if they remake it! I agree with the majority leave it alone and honor Patrick Swayze! This was a Holywood great and "remaking it" would only "ruin it".

The film makers who made the films that I mentioned above, as well as many others that I omitted (LA STRADA, THE WIZARD OF OZ, etc.) did not run out of ideas. They got old and died.

The jews running Hollywood figured out what most people consider entertainment long ago, and have been running with it since. Why fix it if it isn't broken.

"Little guy who just keeps coming atcha."
Too long a movie, but air conditioned.
A young actor showing that he can run the entire emotional gamut about almost nothing.
