Police 'put that dog down' after it kills pregnant California woman

Greg Napora of Pacifica, California, came home to a nightmare Thursday: His pregnant, lifeless wife lying on the ground, her face and torso injured from dozens of bites and one of the family pit bulls standing over her, according to CNN affiliates.

Though police say Darla Napora, 32, was pregnant, it's unclear how far along she was. Authorities responded to the suburban San Francisco home after receiving a call from the husband.

"When they arrived, they found the victim laying in her own front living room. She was not breathing, unresponsive and had major trauma to her upper body," Pacifica Police Capt. Dave Bertini told CNN affiliate KGO. "The husband stated that when he got home, at about noon, he found his wife with their pit bull hovering over her."

Kathy Carlson, 63, lives across the street from the white, single-story home where the attack occurred. She told the San Francisco Chronicle that Greg Napora was outside and visibly distraught when police arrived.

"He was in the driveway all frantic, yelling," Carlson told the paper. "He had blood on his hands, blood on his shirt and blood down his pants."

According to CNN affiliate KTVU, first responders tried to administer CPR to Darla Napora when the blood-covered 2-year-old male dog charged them. They shot the animal.

"The last thing we wanted to happen was for the dog to get out and start attacking bystanders or be loose in the neighborhood," Bertini told KGO. "So as soon as the dog got out of the backyard, the decision was immediately made to put that dog down, and that's why the dog was shot three times by two officers on scene."

The couple had had the dog since it was a pup. The Naporas owned another pit bull, a spayed 6-year-old, which is not believed to have been involved in the attack, police said. As a precaution, it was taken to Peninsula Humane Society for an examination.

Though San Francisco has a law that requires city residents to spay or neuter their pit bulls, Pacifica has no similar law, according to the Chronicle. The 2-year-old dog that mauled Darla Napora had not been neutered, police told local media.

Neighbors told the two television stations that the dogs appeared normal and well behaved in the past. A next-door neighbor told KTVU that the dogs would bark at each other, but when Darla Napora called them, they'd back down. They responded well to her, the neighbor said.

Another neighbor, Tom Lujan, told the station he thinks pit bulls are dangerous.

“I wouldn't have one, and I wouldn't want my family around one,” he said.

There have been no problems reported at the Napora household and no reason to expect the dog to attack someone, police said. Police said there were no prior problems at the Napora household, and no reason to expect the dog would attack.

An autopsy for Darla Napora and a necropsy for the pit bull are slated for Friday.

"Eventually we're going to find out if there's anything physically or medically wrong with the dog that may have caused this attack," Bertini told KGO. "We have already done an extensive interview with the husband, and there are follow up questions that we may ask in the future."

The CDC says numbers are flawed and unreliable:

How well trained a dog is and how well trained the handler is has got to be taken into consideration.

I think your an ignorant idiot for your comment. Not all of these dogs are bad. I'm allergic to dogs, but if I wasn't would own one of these dogs because they are lovable animals. Any type of dog could attack for any reason, not just pitbulls.

TO the people that think ALL pitbulls are bad based on the actions of some of them. Isn't that the same as saying all blacks are criminals just because a few of the population are? You are an ignorant fool with no knowledge of actual facts. Its people like you that are the problem in America.

its funny to me how ppl come to the defense of dogs and say that not all of them are bad, but when it comes to muslims they call them all terrorists.

      @Zayrina

Some people would say speaking about something you know nothing about would also make someone an idiot.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying everyone should own a pit... especially without knowing the breed, as they are a different kind of dog entirely. Most dogs are not near as territorial and person/property protective as pits. Most dogs don't have the shear muscle mass and raw power that these dogs have. People who know nothing about them shouldn't own them.

I've had mine since he was 9mo old. He is now nearly two. He weighs over 80lbs and doesnt have an ounce of fat on him. Anyone in my family... he won't even play bite at. He'll let my little cousins drag him around while he lays on the floor....
... Come at me or anyone in my family with any sign of aggression... and that dog will tear you apart.

Its all about understanding mentality and respecting the animal, the same as it is with any dog.

To people who say ay dog can attack at any time, you are correct. However, not every dog is capable of the crushing and biting power of a pitbull. I always find it amazing how the pitbull that just mauled or murdered someone is always the ideal dog... Serves her right for owning a pitbull, at least this time it wasn't a neighbors kid or other person killed by these idiots choice of pets.

You must be silly and have had no proper understanding of dogs. Probably never owned one or just plain stupid. Dogs have to be trained and owned responsibly. If you do not teach your kids manners they become rude and uncouth. If you do not teach your kids moral values they become very uncouth in society. Same with dogs.. they are animals but are trainable to become good companions and friends. Many people however do not take time to train a dog just thinking that owning one may be kool especially a breed like the pitbull. It requires responsible people to train it correctly not just keep it as a pet and let it roam freely in the house. Obviously people dont teach the dog how to behave and obedience is the key in training dogs.. in this case its an unfortunate case of a dog not being trained properly and the police officers or people at the scene with firearms also themselves do not know how to deal with dogs and by just firing 3 shots thinking that they put the dog down is better.. ... well our cops do the same to people as well.

I have a pit bull that is almost two years old. Not once has he ever shown one sign of ever
attacking another soul. As a matter of fact this dog is scared of everything!!!!!!!!!! I have 2
teenage children whom this dog is very close to. Any breed of dog can become mean
and violent. I have seen labrador's attack innocent people walking down the street
minding their own business. To say all pit bulls are mean and aggressive is a sure sign
of stupidity that knows nothing of the breed. I love My dog to death and he loves both
Myself and My family. He is very well trained and listens to whatever I tell him to do.
He's never done the opposite. I really do think some of You need to do Your homework
before posting about an animal You know nothing about. Pit Bulls are rated second
for being the best breed to have around any child and they lose only to a german
shepard, but because the media is always reporting on these dogs they have
made their reputations as cruel disobedient monster's. because they won't report
on the other attacks that happen everyday by so called better breed's.

Well, you are a moron for owning a pitbull around children, period. Comparing labs attacking someone to a pitbull attacking is idiotic at best. Pure statistics prove that simply owning a dog means eventually you will be bitten, however, stats also show that pits KILL more people, by far, than any other breed COMBINED! Please stop defending with such stupid logic, it make no sense, can pit owners come back with a more convincing argument? I don't think people will buy it either. It's always the beloved family pet before it kills somebody...

Yes, Pits are one of the breeds that kill people – as have Rotts, Huskies, German Shepards and Chows. A common factor in almost all cases is that the dogs have not been neutered. People who don't spay/neuter their pets are just generally irresponsible, but it can actually be deadly when you own dogs that can become aggressive over territory. I don't know if this was the case here... I just know if's ridiculous to state all Pits are "killers". My sister and brother in law have two Pit/Rottweiler mixes that are as sweet and loving as can be, and if I ever have room for one, I'd definitely adopt a Pit.

PIT BULLS ARE THE DOGS OF SATAN AND EVERYONE OF THEM SHOULD BE PUT DOWN. Traci I hope yor kids do not have their faces ripped off like SO MANY other little kids have. And here is a fact for your ignorant ass. In 2010 there where 33 fatalities attributed to dog bites . Pits were responsible for almost 70% of those deaths even though the breed only makes up 5% of the total amount of dog breeds on earth. Get your head out of the sand and put your emotions away and realize that this is a very dangerous and powerful breed . Check out DOGBITES.ORG for more FACTS but beware the victim story page is very graphic and gut wrenching. And to all of you who have Pits around your children.. get em outta your home asap or else.BTW the Pit is oulawed in over 650 us cities and all military bases. Just a little misunderstood huh...HA

Perhaps to be fair to the pit bulls, there are gentle pits, I have talked with people who owned them for years.

The problem I have with pits is that If they decide to attack, it will be fatal in the majority of instances. They don't just bite and run, they bite until the victim is still. So I guess, if you could stand the pain and not scream while being ripped apart, just play dead and maybe it will stop?

They attack on instinct, playing dead won't help, until the blood stops spurting they won't stop. I guess maybe you hope the pit get bored before you bleed to death. Kids are pretty much SOL...

A woman and her child died. That is the point of this article. Animals are animals and while we love them, they cannot be totalled trusted (just like humans). I would say though pit bills certainly are the ones at the top of the list of breeds for these type of attacks. Sorry to the husband and the rest of her family.

Owning a dog is challenging and responsible hobby. Sometimes people do not take their dogs seriously. They too need to be vacinated correctly. Their temperament checked and given lots of attention. I breed dogs and understand how they need to be handled.

People do not want to spend enough to care about the dogs well being. Many factors could have caused the pitbull to become ferocious and attack someone. This could be due to parasitic induced inflamation in the brain. They probably did not provide proper vetinary care to the animal causing it to ingest parasites that can cause problems to name a few such as heart worms, and a many more.

However, it is tragic that someone has to suffer the consequence of not taking enough affirmative action to make the dog safe for the family and neighbours.

If inflamation was the cause it would have impaired the dogs ability to behave rationally hence it could have mistaken the women as an attacker caused by further impairment of its vision.

Hence it is important to always take a dog for vet checks and ensure that all the important vaccines are there i.e rabbies and many others...

In short there are many factors that caused the pitbull to attack a person however, again, insufficient knowledge lacking and all could have been contributory factors to the attack. To the victims family my sympathies.

A very very important point is being missed here: "The 2-year-old dog that mauled Darla Napora had NOT been neutered".
Guess Mr. Macho man husband didn't want to 'shame' the dog and remove his testosterone aka testicles.

This is a terrible story that poor man lost his wife and baby, in Canada we recently had another pit bull attack it owner the dog was in bad hands in the first place but the police had to shoot the dog as it was going crazy. Dogs don't usually bite their people, pittys are a breed that will do anything for thier owners these dogs are shown how to behave badly. The thing about pits once they start it is hard to get them to stop, yes the dog is a powerfull animal but know the breed before you have two of them they are a special type of dog, most pit bulls are good just end up in the wrong hands, when they bite or attack it becomes deadly as they are so powerfull I know alot of other dogs that bit and attack but not as powerful so there is not as much damage, the reson you are here more about the pit bull these days is because more people own them and this is why you here alot more abouth the pits, back in the 70's i beleive it was the german sheppard who was attacking and doing all the damage and I think back then they tried to band that breed too, dog is a dog they bite some worst then others!
