New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

Since we don't have any money and the defense of the country is for both the rich and poor, can we create a military tax on everybody and actually pay to compete. But if we did lose a war to Russia, who would lose more? The rich or the poor. Maybe the military tax should be paid for by those that would lose the most!
GWB had two wars that were not included in his budget. Not paid for.

Pak-Fa is BEST 5th Gent Aircraft till date. My American Friends will tend to say F22 is the best m sure most of them are not aware that F 22 cannot release Weapons At Supersonic Speed it can release weapons only at Sub Sonic speeds but Pak Fa can, F22 was built keeping in mind that Future Wars will Be fought BVR (Beyond Visual Range) and rightly so but they fail to analyze What if a plane with same Stealth Capabilities came across it Say F22 came across Pak Fa that BVR combat due to stealth will Turn into VISUAL Range Combat and that where PAK Fa edges out F22 in term of capabilities and also will depend on Pilot skills. F22 takes 5 times more maintenance and is 3 times more costly then PAK- Fa. Having said that PAK-FA will only be commissioned in 2017 both in Russia and Indian Airforce so till date F22 is the No 1 Commissioned Plane. Not sure will stay there 4 long. :P

All of that is pure conjecture and manufacturer's spin. This plane is not even in production so you don't know what its maintenance will be and you don't know what it can actually do.

Realty Bites and matter of the fact it isn't in production all the more reason to believe above mentioned points are correct.

The F-22 derives a large portion of its maneuverability from its thrust-vectoring engines. It's hard to tell from this picture, or the videos on Youtube, but it doesn't look to me like this fighter has thrust-vectoring, so I can't see how it could be an equal match for the F-22.

It has 3d thrust vectoring vs F-22 2d. Even Su-27s have 3d thrust vectoring.

Looking at this picture the engines will not allow for a very stealthy plane. More than likely they have gone after the high maneuverability that most Russian fighters have been centered around. I would have been more impressed had they gone forward with the Su -47 Berkut that was a very impressive and innovative design.
In the end the machine is only as good as the pilots that fly them, and US pilots are better trained and motivated than any of our adversaries.

I love how CNN has made it a habit of citing "state-run" media sources from countries that have countless independent media outlets. LOL! Too funny!

You see, in other countries, unauthorized officials don't rush to spill gutts to friendly journalist. The idea of confidentiality is taken more seriously there. The "independent" are not always first privy to the government program info. Especially millitary programs. If this is the first time the jet is demoed, most likely the independent sources don't have any info on it. So, "according to official who didn't want to disclose his name," doesn't work well in most of the world.

All this money for what!! I could care less about who has the best. Look at how many people, especially children, are dieing of hunger and starvation, lack of medical assistance http://www.voanews.com/english/news/africa/US-Officials-Visit-Somali-Refugees-Press-for-Famine-Assistance-127330003.html. http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/08/11/somalia.gupta.graves/index.html. This is all selfishness, inconsideration, and hate. Maybe more effort should be place on trying to live in this world together in peace and help those that are in need. Look at all the comments above. You are all hating each other; for WHAT!! A dam plane and who has the most "power". Seriously, is it worth it?

I think Russia is finally being smart – everyone is always talking about how sad it is watching its military rust from lack of use and neglect – making them invisible is the answer.

Why put the blame on India for buying this F22 lookalike? We were dishing out gazillions of dollars to their neighbors, who stab us in the back every chance they've got.

Great...The Ruskies have a jet that will rival the F-22 Raptor, now if only their pilots were as well trained and capable as the U.S., the new fighter would be an impressive tool. Too much plane and not enough pilot = unfulfilled potential and expensive disappointment. Primates with precision tools will still be primates!

Except that when USAF pilots don't have AWACS, we suck. India kicks our rear ends in war games every time they manage to take out our AWACS.

That's arrogance. Who said Russia doesn't have pilots? We are so accustomed to see ourselves as "the best and the only one in the world" that we don't even realize there are other equally capable countries. And as we are actually on the decline, not being able to produce a new plane for a loooooong time.
