13 dead in string of attacks in southern Israel

[Updated at 9:09 a.m.] The death toll in southern Israeli violence now stands at 13 - six Israelis and seven attackers, authorities said.

[Updated at 7:57 a.m.] Defense Minister Ehud Barak issued a statement regarding the attacks:

"This is a serious terrorist attack in a number of locations. The event reflects the weakening of Egyptian control over Sinai and the expansion of the activity of terrorist forces.  The origin of these acts of terror is in Gaza and we will act against them in our full force and determination."

[Updated at 7:47 a.m.] At least six people were killed and more than two dozen others were injured in southern Israel when attackers fired shots at a bus, assaulted Israeli soldiers, and fired mortars and an anti-tank missile.

The assault occurred about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Israeli city of Eilat - close to the Israeli-Egyptian border. Israeli soldiers exchanged gunfire with the assailants, described by the Israel Defense Forces as "terrorists."

An Israeli emergency official said six people died. Four were found in a private car and one was at a nearby scene. A sixth man was found dead as well. At least 26 people were admitted to Yoseftal Hospital in Eilat, including one with serious injuries. Three injured people were transferred to Soroka hospital in Beer Sheva. The IDF said casualties included civilians and soldiers.

The incident began when shots were fired at a vehicle on a bus traveling from Beersheva to Eilat, near the community of Netafim.IDF spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai said that after the bus attack, explosives were used against an IDF force operating in the area. Mortars were fired toward Israeli troops near the Egyptian border, and an anti-tank missile was fired, Mordechai said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak met to discuss the "grave attacks," the prime minister's office said.

  5. Israel Today

I am an 18 year old citizen of Israel.
All of my friends are currently serving in the Israeli Army, so as you may guess- this day has been pretty stressful. After making sure that all my friends are safe- and are not part of the 7 citizens that have lost their lives as part of these horrid terror attacks, nor part of the 31 injured – I wanted to hear what is the world's response on this difficult day. To my incredible surprise- there has been no clue anywhere on the front page here in the CNN site, and only after searching specifically for this incident did I find this short mentioning of this wide- ranged attack in which about 25 terrorists have entered Israel and attacked both citizens and Israeli soldiers.
It is time that the world press starts showing the full picture- and not the Palestinian side alone.
In prayer for the health of the 31 injured, and in memory of the 7 innocent souls who have been killed in today's terrorist attack- let's hope that no more innocent lives will be taken.

Take heart, we're not all dupes in North America and Europe – though it sometimes seems that way. Most of us still recognize that a criminal is a criminal, no matter if they try to bring politics into it. Hamas are just a criminal gang.

Israel attacks Gaza almost on daily basis with hardly a coverage by CNN & other media outlets. Their soldiers were attacked & in their airstrikes on Gaza a two year old boy died too.

There has to be a political solution to this festering issue. but despite peace loving Jews, palestinians & the International Community striving for a Two State solution the apartheid regime in Israel, backed unfortunately by our politicians holding dual loyalty has been blocking any such moves. President Obama announced US support for a Two State solution and thousands of Israelis came out in support in the streets of Tel Aviv.
President Obama buckled down under pressure from Israeli govt lobby and politicians but the courageous Jews are carrying on the effort. Like JStreet & Jewish Voice for Peace.

It's unfortunate that the Americans and the Israelis support a Two State Solution but the Palestinians and other Arabs reject it. It's unfortunate because Israel can OFFER the Palestinians peace and a sovereign independent state but it can not shove it into the Palestinian collective throat against their will. It's unfortunate because as long as the Palestinians and their democratically elected leaders are willing the war to continue it will continue and more people (mostly Palestinian Arabs) will be killed. If and when those still alive will decide that the number of Palestinians killed is high enough they will ask for peace negotiations. Israel will gladly agree.

That's where israelis loose me. They are like W. Criminals attack and kill their citizens, and instead of tracking down the criminals, indiscriminantly start killing more innocents.

I would say treating terrorists any different than other criminals is the problem. We blow these boogiemen up into much more than they are.. And end up, by our actions – killing innocents, swelling their ranks.

Then they start thinking they are more than they are, and it feeds itself.

It's drama. Pure and simple. And the vast silent majority pay.

Leeintulsa: I'd recommend you to read something about WWII or any other war. You will be surprised to discover that enemy soldiers (or even generals) are NOT treated like "other criminals" during a war. You will discover that enemy fighters are being killed instead of being arrested and tried and that (o horror) sometimes civilians are being killed as well because no country (not even Israel) has the magic weapon that hits bad guys only. You will discover a lot of interesting things... if you're willing to know something of what you're talking about.

@thinker23: so you are comparing this to any other war? This is no war. Perhaps you should think a little bit before attacking me with apples and oranges. What i'm saying is the old models of war do not fit this endeavor.

If it was, like wwii or any other war, it would be over by now.

After wwii, some germans had a resistance of their own. They weren't labelled terrorists and pummelled with air strikes. They slipped quietly into history. Or did you not read that one?

If, indeed, this was a 'war', the israelies could have ended it some time ago..

If we had let the seals do their thing back in 91, how many lives would have been saved? On *both* sides. And, what, we would have alienated the taliban? Big deal.

  15. Israeli MOSSAD recruits 50K mercenaries...

...to help Gadhaffi quell the rebellion. The MOSSAD has been exposed, again. This time recruiting 50,000 north-African merecnaries to fight those fighting Gadhaffi, a long-time bribe taker of Israel's, just as Egypt's Mubareck was. News of this has reported around the world in case you want to check.
