48 NYC shootings in a weekend: Trend or random tragedy?

It was a very bloody Labor Day weekend in New York. Forty-eight people were shot, including two law enforcement officers and a woman who was sitting with her daughter on a Brooklyn building stoop. The officers survived; three people have died.

The high number of shootings has captured headlines and led some to wonder whether there's some specific explanation for the violence.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says there is, and he said Tuesday that lawmakers in the nation's capital ought to do something to better control gun violence. New York state reportedly had some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but Bloomberg wants Washington's help. He spoke outside a hospital where the officers were being treated.

"This is a national problem requiring national leadership," he said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "But at the moment, neither end of Pennsylvania Avenue has the courage to take basic steps that would save lives."

Jon M. Shane, an assistant professor at one of America's most highly regarded policing think tanks, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, cautioned against drawing any conclusions from the numbers alone. Shane spent 20 years with the police department in Newark, New Jersey, which has consistently ranked as one of the most violent cities in the United States.

"I would caution against chalking this up to violence that is going to happen over any holiday weekend," Shane said, adding that thorough analysis of each Labor Day weekend shooting should be done to extrapolate concrete explanations that go beyond the particulars of each incident. One would need to research possible motives in each case and investigate suspects' backgrounds and their possible criminal affiliations. Previous crimes at the locations should be weighed from every angle.

In short, 48 shootings sounds like a lot, but drawing any large conclusions, or linking them to a larger trend, will take time.

The woman and the officers were shot Monday hours after the West Indian American Day Parade ended in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. According to the New York Post, two men were "slap boxing" before a shootout in which police became involved. In all, nine people in the area of the parade were shot.

Several people were shot in the Bronx on Sunday. Some of the wounded were children. Four people were shot Monday in Flatbush, Brooklyn, one teenager fatally.

The weekend's bloodshed put a fine point on figures the FBI released in May showing that violent crime was down throughout the country in the past year but up in New York. The New York Police Department released its own report in January, available in full here (PDF), which visually lays out all of the city's 536 homicides in 2010.

The problem is that there are not enough guns out there. Everybody should be packing heat. That way, when some idiot or wise guy starts getting smart, he can get blown away (hopefully) before he starts pumping lead. You can reduce police forces, less prison overcrowding, ease the burden on the courts. . . . Seriously, the thing to do is to get more Dirty Harrys and Death Wish dudes out there blowing away the Scarfaces and bin Ladens. MORE GUNS MORE GUNS MORE GUNS!!!!

We always had guns in the house when I was a kid. May father had handguns.
It is not the guns. It's the people who have them.
Somebody mentioned more stringent applications. HA HA!
The New Yorkers who shoot people don't often apply for permits.
    How naïve can you be?

This is far more of a trend than some so-called "random tragedy". Until the right-wing thugs in Washington change their priorities and soon, this kind of thing will only be on the increase! With the current leaders in Congress and the lame-brained President we now have, this problem will only get worse!!!

I am glad I don't live in NY. I have a lot of guns and no I don't shoot people. But if I lived in a area that had as much violence as NY I would carry any time I was out of the house. Every one should. You can defend yourself. The police come after the fact and then your dead and it is too late.

My Muslim brothers no need to kill Americans. They are killing their own friends and neighbors. They even killed my father. They cannot see that God is watching everything.

Its people like this that are ruining the fun in owning a firearm for everyone else! People always forget teh most important thing to remember here: GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE! PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE! If you take away the guns then yes the number of shootings will go down but the number of stabbings will go up. People are so ignorant and blind to the reality. If someone wants to commit a crime bad enough they will just find another means. When are we going to open our minds to this simple reality? Come on. Who's with me?

I love guns. I would like an assault rifle and a handgun. Ah, throw in a shotgun and maybe a .22 for fun. But if you think that lax gun laws are not killing people, you are stupid.

If people kill people, then why use guns? The guns don't kill people logic is so lame, but unfortunately these bumper sticker slogans seem to work w/all these mental midgets.

Stabbings are preferable to shootings. So are punchings. And kickings. Shootings are extremely deadly. Also, the argument isn't against guns, but against illegal, easy-to-get street guns.

busted: "If people kill people, then why use guns? The guns don't kill people logic is so lame, but unfortunately these bumper sticker slogans seem to work w/all these mental midgets."

Your ad hominem is quite ironic, isn't it?

The importance of "guns don't kill people, people kill people" is that points out that taking guns out of the equation will not stop would-be robbers, murderers, etc. from *gasp* wanting to rob, murder, etc.

      Glad I could help you.

      Next?

Thank you Nah. i think the res of you misunderstood. I didn't get that off a bumper sticker. Its a proven fact. A gun doesn't decide to shoot you on the streets. So let me rephase for all of you techinacal people WEAPONS( including guns, knives, swords, axes, cars, bricks, tire irons, golf clubs, baseball bats, ANYTHING that can be used to injure or kill a living thing including animals people and plants) don't kill people, people kill people. lets see you pick that apart!

Umm noodlehat, where do you get off criticizing NJ???? This thread has NOTHING to do with Jersey but as usual some ignorant person starts talking trash about my state. If you saw the preppy, upper class suburb that I grew up in, it would most likely make your cesspool of a town pale in comparison. We have some of the best schools in the nation and most of the wealthiest towns in the USA are based in NJ. I really cant take the Jersey bashing that goes on here... the one thing that gives me solace is the fact that you, like most people who comment on this board probably live in some backwater, inconsequential town.

...right, so what exactly is gun control? All this blah blah regarding help from Washington, etc. I bet not a single weapon involved in these shootings was registered. Yes, lets continue to take away gun ownership rights from responsible citizens and completely ignore the fact that this does absolutely nothing to cure the problem.

No, lawmakers ought to do something to better control lawmakers. Put people on the skids with nothing to live for and I don't care if you make every gun disappear, this will still happen with pitch forks and billy clubs. Find a cure for the Cause – guns to kill people, people kill people.
