Officials confirm 'credible but unconfirmed' 9/11 threat

[Updated at 10:05 p.m. ET] New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Thursday night that authorities are "taking additional precautions" given "new threat information" tied to the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

These measures include "vehicle checkpoints around the city," more bomb-sniffing dogs around the city, increased towing of illegally parked cars and greater police staffing, according to Kelly.

[Updated at 9:56 p.m. ET] New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Thursday night that while additional police will be deployed around the city amid reports of an "unconfirmed" terror threat to the city on September 11, "there's no reason for any of the rest of us to change ... our daily routines."

In an earlier statement, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged residents to be "cautious and aware" while adding, "There is no reason to panic." And D.C. Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that authorities in the nation's capital are preparing for 9/11 anniversary events and noted "maintaining a certain sense of unpredictability is essential to the success of any security plan."

[Updated at 9:53 p.m. ET] U.S. officials said Thursday evening they have "specific, credible but unconfirmed" information about a potential threat against the United States coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"We have received credible information very recently about a possible plot directed at the homeland that seems to be focused on New York and Washington, D.C.," a senior administration official told CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr.

The official said the plot was believed to involve three individuals, including a U.S. citizen. U.S. officials believed the threat was a vehicle laden with explosives, but "the intelligence picture is not completely formed," the official said. "Not enough is known about the potential operatives and their plotting."

Another source gave CNN conflicting information about possible details of the threat.

A senior law enforcement official involved in briefings about the matter told CNN Justice Department Producer Terry Frieden that his best information is that the three individuals had not yet entered the United States.

The information came in around noon Wednesday, one official said.

A senior federal law enforcement official intimately involved in counterterrorism efforts told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King authorities "aren't sure if this is or real or just chatter." The official confirmed the threat was vehicle-related.

Officials said they were taking the threat seriously, while evidently trying to temper the news by saying such threats are commonplace during key events.

Sad , the Administration in power right now is the ones getting the information but still it is getting blamed as a republican hoax. Maybe it is away to keep people from talking about the Presidents speach and leaked by the white house.
To me that is a dumb as a Republican hoax.
We should remember 911 was not the first attack on the world trade center. So is to much to believe they may try again.

The speech was wonderful and great for the people if it is passed. I think the only thing in the way is the big elephant in the room.

I guess that the right-wing thugs in Washington are going to try to scare us again. The only possible way such an attack can be carried out is to have the C.I.A. orchestrate one!!! Neither Al Qaeda nor any other terrorist organization has the power to even come close to a 9/11 nor ever had.

I think it's time for citizens to act. On occasions like this, take out the terrorists.

Good grief Connie B, grow a brain, will you? No wonder this country's in such trouble since people like you let the government do all your thinking for you! Then again, when I was 6 years old i did believe in a bogeyman very much like you believe in these so-called "terrorists" today!

How can something be credible but unconfirmed?

How can something be confirmed but unconfirmed?

Is this a joke? Or just plain made-up?

It's edible, but no way of knowing if it's nutritious. Look people, there has been nothing stopping "terrorists" from entering our country these past 10 yrs. How hard would it be for thousands of "terrorists" disguised as illegal Mexicans to enter this country right along with the 100s of thousands of illegal immigrants who enter unimpeded ea. and every year. They could cause all kinds of mayhem...from suicide bombings to poisoning our unguarded water supplies, lakes, rivers, streams, etc. If they wanted in, they would be in.

"Terrorists" could even disguise themselves as South American drug traffikers and come here just as freely as real traffikers do. How do you think we get our illegal drugs? If they can get in, "terrorists" could get in the same way if they wanted. (duh) and doh!

As amazing as this is to see us be so proactive, please don't forget the other potential targets e.g., L.A., Miami, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, etc., and it would be just like them to focus all attention on another area, only to target other major metropolitan areas. All: BE AWARE AND REPORT ANYTHING OUT OF ORDINARY!!!! God Bless Us All.

To those who say this is just more talk, smoke and mirrors, or fake terror, I would respond by saying that I truly hope your are right. But there are people out there, whether organized or "lone wolves", who are thinking about killing you. Logically I would not just consider the anniversary date but also the day of the week on which it falls. Business districts are closed, it is not a heavy travel weekend, nor will malls and hotels be heavily crowded. So if I was an Islamic terrorist wanting to kill many, there two events that would seem prime. The first would be a large sporting event. Tens of thousands of people in one location would have to be tempting. But security at these has become pretty tight and there would be no certainty of success. The second event would not garner as many casualties but has the benefit of being highly symbolic for an Islamic extremist. Houses of worship. Hundreds of thousands of people will gather across the country in remembrance of the anniversary in the same way we did right after 9/11. Most of these have no security. As a matter of fact their very nature means the doors are open to all. If I can think of it, the bad guys already have. So lets hold the sarcasm and keep our eyes open and guard up.

@street heat1...Foreigners are "thinking" about killing US while KNOWING we are killing them. Ya don't say. I bet if thousands of illegal foreigners came here, they could raype, rob, murder, even take our low-paying cash jobs and we would still give them free healthcare, education, etc...and if you picked on them, they would holler "foul" and you would listen.

The only thing that scares me here is the fact that the C.I.A. may orchestrate a phoney terrorist attack in order to boost both the popularity and credibility of the government among the people. With these thugs in Washington, one never knows!!!
