A huge wildfire raging near Austin has destroyed nearly 1,400 homes and is still spreading, officials said Thursday.
Victoria Koenig, spokeswoman for the Texas Forest Service, said the Bastrop County fire has destroyed 1,368 homes - more than double the estimate officials gave Wednesday.
Despite hopes that the fire would be largely contained by Wednesday night, it remained 30% contained Thursday morning, she said. About 34,000 acres have been destroyed.
The fire has killed at least two people. An elite search team is helping local officials scour the area for other potential victims.

how are you, banasy?
On the texas/michigan thing, i experienced it first hand. In junior high, we moved from rockwall, tx to merrimack, nh. Everyone up there thought we lived on a ranch, rode horses everywhere, etc. It was quite amusing.
@ layminister H-I was hoping at least someone gave a hoot.
Yeah not to many cowboys left. It can be confusing. Like West Texas can be closer to California than say Shreveport La. The population minority is white. The majority is of Hispanic, Black, Asian descent. Yet we almost all dislike govt. Our governor has limited powers, our legislature meets only once every 2 years, our judical sytems is very complex and oversteps each other. We have numerous board/commissions that are elected and take power away from the governor. One like the Railroad Commission has absolutely nothing to do with railroads. We like it. Keeps them out of trouble.
@Ron... Excuse me? Not a desert? Ok. We'll call it a temperate arid zone instead. So next time u go outside do yourself a favor and pound sand up ur azz
And pine trees grow everywhere in north america. They're about as common as retarded americans

@ron: sounds like big government.. I thought republicans were agin that..
Hey lee in tulsa hope lee in n e goes away
@Scottish Mama; Jindal wasn't Governor during Katrina so he didn't have the authority to, some dumb @ss Democrat was and she waited days to ask the Federal Government for help. While she waited Bush mobilized FEMA and sent Destroyers off the Gulf Coast in preparation to help. You are correct about Obama pulling aid from Joplin though and he never once lifted a finger to help Alabama or Tennessee.
@HNIC; You must be one of those dumb @ss easterners who thinks whenever a disaster strikes there the rest of the country should drop everything to help out but when a disaster strikes another party of the country it must be our fault. Here's hoping you all get dysentery from the flood waters. Oh yeah don't come crying to us after the next hurricane hits, just rot.
@HNIC; If you happen to be one of those loons out west make sure you're under a bridge during the next earthquake you have.
