Texas death row inmate executed

Texas death row inmate Lawrence Russell Brewer, 44, was executed by lethal execution at 7:21 p.m. ET Wednesday, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.

Brewer was one of three men found guilty for his involvement in the dragging death of James Byrd 13 years ago.

Brewer and two other white men kidnapped the 49-year-old black man on the night of June 7, 1998. They chained him by the ankles to the back of a pickup truck and dragged him for 3 ½ miles down a country road near Jasper, Texas. Byrd died when he was decapitated after he hit a culvert.

Prosecutors said the crime, which they described it as one of the most vicious hate crimes in U.S. history, was intended to promote Brewer's fledgling white supremacist organization.

i'm truly torn on the death penalty...part of me says it has to stop...sometime...with someone...but this case makes me feel it is justice served...of course, 13 years of free food and shelter isn't exactly prompt...

I think the time is needed for some cases, to make sure the guilty party is truly guilty. But in cases such as this, an expedited execution might be called for. The for/against death penalty argument is a struggle, cases such as these lean me towards the "for" argument.

I understand the all too human desire for revenge, getting even. That's what the death penalty is all about. The problem with revenge is that it does nothing to heal the people who think getting even will somehow make them feel better. If anything, getting even (executing somebody) makes them even angrier than they were when they realize that it didn't relieve their emotional pain.

Ths is not revenge. REvenege is when you seek out a person who did you wrong and carry out YOUR own judgment. Even famikly members would seek the murderer. Mexico is notorious for this act. A trial is NOT revenge...based on yor logic...it would no difference...Jesus taught different...I'll stick with Jesus

Executed by lethal execution? Great writing there. I didn't know there was anything about execution that wasn't lethal.

i would like to see how many of you would still be against the death penalty if it was your family that was murdered.

I have had family members murdered...and I'm still against the death penalty. Death is the easy way out and more of these people wish for it than anyone admits to. It's their easy way out of whatever crap life they've lived. So, so answer your question, that doesn't apply to all who have had to endure the loss of family at someone else's hand.

Texas sure doesn't mess around when it comes to the DEATH PENALTY !!! So be it !!! I believe in the death penalty and what they did to the man behind that vehicle to cause him to die was a ultimate crime. Terrible for the man's family. Tonight in Georgia they are trying to stop at lethal injection death, but I hope they go forward with it. GO TEXAS !!

I believe an eye 4 an eye. There is no reason for taking an innocent life away, if you do the crime then pay the consequence
