Hispanics drive growth of U.S. white population

The growth in the United States’ white population last decade is due largely to a rise in the number of the country’s Hispanics, the U.S. Census Bureau says.

And the number of people who reported their race as both black and white more than doubled, according to the bureau.

The data were part of two reports - one on the U.S. white population, the other on the black population - from the 2010 Census that the bureau released Thursday.

Hispanics account for 74% of white population’s growth

Though the number of whites in the United States rose last decade, and though they still were in the vast majority in 2010, their share of the total population dipped.

Because other races grew faster, whites’ percentage of the population - including multiracial whites - dropped from 77% to 74.8%. Nevertheless, the white population did grow by 14.1 million people, or 6.5% (to 231 million).

Of that growth, most of it came from people who identified as Hispanic. It is important to note that the bureau considers Hispanic to be a category of origin, not race.

Whites who said they were Hispanic accounted for 74 percent of the growth in the U.S. white population from 2000 to 2010, according to the bureau. This includes people who said they were multiracial white, such as white and black, or white and Asian.

Pew study: Largest U.S. group of poor kids is now Hispanic

The number of Hispanic whites - both multiracial Hispanic whites and not - rose from 18.8 million to 29.2 million, and now represent 9.4 percent of the U.S. population, up from 6.7 percent.

Non-Hispanic white population declines in 15 states, increases in some big cities

The number of non-Hispanics who reported white as their sole race declined in 15 states, including 11 in the Northeast and Midwest. For whites as a whole, including white Hispanics and multiracial whites, their greatest population growth was in the West and South, with Arizona (21 percent increase), Nevada (21 percent) and Utah (20 percent) leading the way.

Non-Hispanic whites were increasingly drawn to some big cities. In nine of the 20 largest metropolitan areas, the percentage of non-Hispanic whites living inside the principal city, versus living outside, increased (Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Atlanta, Miami, Boston and San Diego). This happened as percentages of people living inside the principal cities versus outside decreased in 19 of those metro areas.

Black population grows 15%; white-and-black up 137%

The population of U.S. blacks - either those who said they were solely black, or black in combination with other races - rose 15%, to 42 million. That comprises 14% of the U.S. population, up from 13% in 2000.

An increasing percentage of all U.S. blacks lived in the South, where most American blacks already lived. Fifty-seven percent of black-alone Americans lived in the South in 2010, up from 55% in 2000. Percentages decreased in the Northeast and the Midwest, the bureau said.

About 60 percent of blacks - multiracial or not - lived in 10 states in 2010: New York, Florida, Texas, Georgia, California, North Carolina, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, according to the bureau.

The number of people who said they were both black and white rose by 137%, from about 785,000 in 2000 to 1.8 million in 2010. The black-white population is the nation’s most prevalent multiracial group, the bureau said.

In a meeting we teachers had after school a representative of the U.S.Government handed out a profile that we were to fill out, a racial profile. They had the normal: Latin, Black,White, etc. the last box was other. I check the other and was called on to explain and I held up a piece of white paper and asked, "Does this paper match my skin color?" The Government official said, "No!" She asked, "Well if you are not white, what color are you?" Brilliant question! I told her that," I am a caucasian with a pink hue, therefore I did not match your profiling." She was irritated!

Since most are illegal aliens and do not pay their hospital bills, get free healthcare for their anchor babies as well as welfare to include public housing attained by using the anchor babies social security number then no wonder they can have as many kids as they want, they do not cost them anything. Taxpayers foot the bill for then to have and raise their children.
I would have more kids if they did not cost me anything.

Awarding in state tuition to illegal aliens is fiscally irresponsible and patently unfair.
Push your state representative to make a change.
    Google this: NUMBERSUSA .
Once you are registered, go to the "action board" to send FREE faxes to your state representative.
They are all typed up and ready to go, you just need to click your mouse to send.

Since when are hispanics white? Some may have a very small amount of Spanish or Portuguese admixture, but they hardly qualify as Caucasian.

Troy, I'm a hispanic... And I'm as white as they come... In fact, my Venezuelan great grand uncle faught in the squadron of the Red Baron (Jasta 11) in WWI... My ancestors came to South America from Germany, Italy, France and Spain... You North Americans have very strange concepts of what race is, and have no clue about the people that live in Central and South America... All you know is illegal immigrants and Taco Bell...

Troy, that's the problem. The word Hispanic means Spanish, as in European (did you know Spain was populated by Celts?) But with the mixture of Indian blood, many "Hispanics" are mestizo (e/g/, most Mexicans), and because they are now so prevalent, people now think of Hispanic as non-white. Too bad.

Not a lot of common sense... Hispanics could any race you can imagine... Hispanic is simply an ethnicity, and in fact is too general... Argentinians (who are mostly white by the way) are very different from Bolivians or Brazilians...

The only reason they are counting hispanics as white is because they are seeing whites slowly becoming the minority in the nation. I'll say right now that my kids and others who are half never admit to being half white. They proudly say they are hispanic, and that is all there is to say about that

What is a multiracial white? Again, an American distorted view of race. Race is socially constructed and the growing number of the Hispanic population is a direct confrontation to America's historical definition of race. Due to less racism in Latin American most people are the result of intermarriage and nowhere in Latin America was the "mulatto, quadroon, or mestizo" defined as "black" or "Indian." Only in America will you find "blacks" with very light-skin, straight hair, and blue eyes.

Not correct, Latins like any other group of people can also be incredibly racist. I think it's funny to hear people talk about Latins as one people or group. We are not all Mexican and we are not all mixed, black or white but a combination of everything. The Americas where the new world and as such there's a combination of everything throughout the Americas. If it exist you will find it it either in the north or the south. You will find every possible language spoken not just in the US but throughout the Americas. Btw, most Latins only know what a Taco is because of Taco Bell..

I predict a major split within the "Latino community": Those who proudly identify themselves as indigenous/mestizo, and those who identify themselves as white/European. Conflicts will arise as the latter group distances itself from the former, who will feel disrespected and generally butt hurt.
