Terry Francona will not return as manager of the Boston Red Sox following the team's end-of-season collapse that kept the storied franchise out of the playoffs.
The Red Sox will not exercise its option years on the contract of the manager, who led the team to two World Series championships during his eight seasons in Boston, according to a team statement.
Boston went 7-20 this September, allowing the Tampa Bay Rays to pass them for the American League wild card playoff spot on the last day of the regular season.

Good luck next year, BoSox. Still the best Team in MLB.
not really
If they were the best team, they'd still be in it....and my beloved Yankees would likely be knocked out. But they aren't – and they're at home eating Cheetos like they deserve to.
Give me some of what you're drinking, I wanna be delusional too!
Oh, so you're a little retarded huh?
What? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
Yeah, the month of September would claim otherwise. Also reality
Says yo ho.
Ha ha. Your boys are now part of the biggest meltdown in history and you just let the only reason they won a championship go. Have fun watching the Yankees win another one.
Certainly when you get right down to it, the Yankees were a more successful team than the Red Sox this year. Hard to ignore their success, and Boston's lack thereof. However, no amount of success will ever be enough to make the Yankees not suck. They could win every game from now until doomsday, and they would still suck. Water is wet, sunshine is warm, and the Yankees suck. Some things are just the way they are, and that's that.
Thank you Terry for your 8 great years. I will miss you. Good luck with your next team.
big big big mistake for boston.
Fully agree.
Ya, big mistake. But then again, who cares, Boston sux.
He quit, they didn't fire him.
Boston=Mistake? You're new around here, aren't you?
francona couldn't quit... there was an option on his contract, and the sox could only choose not to exercise it.
They should have canned Theo Epstein, the architect of this disaster... 142 Million for Carl Crawford, and who knows how much for John "Lackluster" Lackey. THe Sox will pay dearly for years for these two mistakes... not to mention Josh Beckett, who was way out of shape most of the year (reason he has back issues... he's got a fat belly!).
Theo is not as bright as everbody thinks...
Harsh! I thought only Steinbrenner did things like that.
I see a Francona to Cubs headline in the near future.
Cubs and probably many others as well.
Actually, he'd likely go to the White Sox, since they just had their guy go. Francona has tiles to the White Sox, too.
He's a great manager, but there does come a point where the players stop listening to you and it becomes impossible to light a fire under them. Unfortunately that happened to Francona this season, and it sounds like he was worn out and wanted to leave anyway. I have a feeling the Cubs will take a good look at him and there might be a good chance he'll be in Wrigley's dugout next year.
He's a good manager... not a great manager.
It's not the manager. It's the high priced talent they brought in who did not perform. They get paid millions, yet they really blew it.
They had to let him go. He would be booed off the field next opening day.
B.S. ... the players will be booed off the field next opening day...
Bostons number one sports blog has all the details a wickedimproper . com
Lets fire the only guy who has brought us a World Series Championship since World War I! Sounds like a great idea! The guy did what no one could do in Boston, don't they own him anything?
I agree. Beckett out of shape . John Lackey was a bum all year. How much money for Matsusaka? Also I am in love with myslf Pappelbon. We need more like Pedroia who give it all everynite. Carl Crawford? How about if you had kept Jason Bay?
