Clinton: 'Iran must be held accountable'

Editor's note:  The U.S. Justice Department says the FBI and the DEA have disrupted a plot involving Iran to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States and commit other attacks. Two men one arrested, the other at large have been charged in connection with the alleged plot, which the Justice Department says was directed by elements of the Iranian government.

The Justice Department says one of the men Manssor Arbabsiar, a naturalized U.S. citizen holding an Iranian passport arranged to hire for the assassination someone in Mexico who he thought was an associate of a drug trafficking cartel. The person in Mexico actually was a DEA confidential source who was posing as a cartel associate, the Justice Department says.

Here are the latest developments in the story on Wednesday:

[Posted at 12:29 p.m. ET] Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that the alleged attempted assassination of Saudi Arabia's U.S. ambassador by Iranian operatives is the "kind of reckless act" which "undermines international norms and the international system."

"Iran must be held accountable," Clinton said.

Clinton said the U.S. government will continue to work to isolate the Iranian regime.

[Posted at 11:48 a.m. ET] Mahan Air, an Iranian commercial airline, has been sanctioned by the United States for its ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday.

[Posted at 7:27 a.m. ET]  Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal said he believes "someone in Iran is going to have to pay the price" for the alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States.

Al-Faisal, a key member of the royal family, was speaking at conference in London Wednesday. Al-Faisal's representatives said the remark was his personal view and not the official Saudi position.

There’s yet another charade calling President OBAMA a WAR MONGER, & a Muslim hater inspite of his track record of rapidly ending the wars in Afghanistan & Iraq against the advise of men in uniform, and his innnumerous efforts to reach out (almost Pandering) to the Muslim world .

And, if all these can STILL HAPPEN under Obama’s watch can we still say they are UNWARRANTED?

TSA checks,FBI surveillence of Mosques,Lectures to FBI agents on militant Islam,Killing of Al-awaki w/o trial,Drone attacks in Pak,Keeping Guantanamo open (inspite of promises!),Continued Military trials for terrorists,Continued covert use of enhanced interrogation techniques and NOW the Iranian imbroglio.

Do these people still say (like Mr. Fareed Zakaria, Imam Rauf,Rashad Hassan etc.) all these are unnecessary?

PLZ. TRY CONVINCING OBAMA ON THAT! Forget his speeches, he knows where the real threats to America lie!

Yes he does. That's why he was going after the U.S. gun manufacturing industry through fast & furious. When it backfired, and subpoenas began being handed out, something major was needed to get it out of the news. Not like CNN was giving it much coverage, but thank God for networks that refuse to carry this Administration's water! Interesting we can't track the guns we purposely illegally sell to Mexican drug cartels that then use them to kill our own agents, but we can get a so-called Iranian agent to offer up a mere $1.5 million to get one to detonate a bomb on our soil. Is this the start of the Obama Administration's Bosnia?

It is a shame on the US-Goverment to tell such unprofessional lies. These lies can only be believed by southern american supporters of the Bush dynasty. The people around the world know how much lies your Goverment tells. We are laughing about your IQ

Have our US mindless masses forgotten that in the 9/11 attack 15 of the attackers were Saudi's . None were Iranian, and none were Iraqi's. But our politicians fabricated reasons with lies, to attack IRAQ. And now 10 years on, a new fabrication on IRAN by the CIA . I wonder if fellow Americans will buy this latest propaganda against IRAN an 5,000 year old civilization. They probably will . I am one American who won't.

Cannibal: You wrote that you won't believe the US reports of the intended assassination. Perhaps it might be wise to wait and see the evidence, then decide.

Another fabricated story from the US against Iran just to increase sanctions.

It's not to increase sanctions, it's to start a war. By now, the Saudis have already given the US their marching orders.

If you think that your government is "fabricating" lies against your Iran why don't you pack up and relocate to Tehran?

@FauxNewz I agree, but don't you think a war would be catastrophic for both parties?

@frank, Thanks but I am not iranian ;) I just have bigger brains than you do.

John, you're assuming bigger brains means that you are smarter. The US isn't perfect, but the government of Iran is downright daibolical. The people who suffer are the decent folks in Iran.

/ / / The pretext for starting WW III has now been fabricated.

/ / / Israel and deep pocket dual national US/Israeli Jews have been pressuring the U.S. to attack Iran since 2002. But two things stood in the way: (1) Syria (2) American opposition to more war-making.

/ / / To topple Syria, the Ziosphere fomented rebellion. The rebels called for reform, but as soon as Assad made reforms, they started calling for revolution. Syria's reaction enabled the Ziosphere to demonize Assad.

/ / / Now, it's time to remove the next obstacle - time whip Americans into an insane war frenzy. A bogus "Iranian Assassination Plot" is all it takes. Look up Israel's 1982 attack on Lebanon: Israel used a similar "assassination plot" as its pretext, when all else failed.

/ / / How very convenient! To see through the lies, just ask "Who gains?".

/ / / Israel gains what it has been seeking for a decade, and Iran loses everything. Then ask yourself why Iran would perpetrate a crime on US soil that is so obviously in Israel's advantage.

/ / / So be prepared for another vast holocaust in the Middle East. Millions more will die, while more trillions flow into the coffers of "War, Inc.". Goodbye Syria, goodbye Iran, goodbye anybody who refuses to worship Israel. One can only hope that the fallout from the depleted uranium will eventually drift westwards and poison the devils and war-maniacs who are the source of this evil.

So what if Iran's alleged plot was true? The US conducts kill missions and drone strikes inside sovereign countries. So, tell me, what's the difference here? If the US is the staging area for some other country's operation, the US raises hell; but does the same thing anyway to other countries while sporting smug.

really hillary? what are you gonna do? scold them? sanction them? with who???? russia? they will never go along with it despite your stupid RESET button....china? same thing....

the FACT is , clinton and obama have royally screwed up vis a vis iran. They are in denial of what iran is after....and naturally, all of the cretins are crawling out from under their liberal rocks to dismiss this terror plot. Its so laughable to see these pro obama media liberals shilling for him so that this terroro plot doesnt call into question obama's whole muslim outreach foreign policy.

clinton is useless. and obama is facing an iran that is rapidly developing its nuclear weapons program. Isnt it time the US deals with this menace? its a global crisis and obama is moving towards "containment theory" and "nuclear umbrellas" ...

    what a giant disgrace.

@ The Bear: Bravo. Obama and Hilary are way in over their head. It is just a matter of time before Iran must be no more. It is inevitable but that is what their leaders want. War. Hopefully we send no troops and use all technology to get it over with quick. I feel sorry for the good people of Iran though who more then any thing would like to live in the 21st. century. Not 750 years ago.

Why can't you accept the fact that it is Iran's or any other nations right to acquire weapons. Why are you assuming that Israel or USA is more privileged then the rest of humanity. If Iran has stolen your weapons then you have the right to go and get it. Has Iran attacked another country first? where is it on records? It was American satanic state that lure Saddam Hussain to attack Iran and gave him all the ballistic missiles. Wake up and don't be so arrogant!

Really? REALLY? The economy is falling apart and you're going to make up some reason to go to another war? REALLY?!

This is stupid. Iran has no possible motive to target some random ambassador. Those people are just figurehead/spokespersons; they don't have any power to DO anything. What POSSIBLE reason could they have when there are 100 better ways to lash out at REAL US interests overseas?

Well then the same goes for good ol' USA...like the event in the mid 60's that Saudia Arabia and England were involved in and the " special care package " came to the USA with 100 million dollars way back then...since then investments and embezzlements and the USA lack to prosecute will make for a HUGE media blitz in a courtroom...
May be USA can practice what they preach first before making such assumptions of Iran...mother of all fock ups...
But what do I know...trick question...information...it's always about information...what you know about who & what they did...in the name of...

Perhaps the Iranian revolution that began the Arab summer wasn't all for nothing afterall... And perhaps the good people of Iran that live in the shadows of dictators every day have not been forgotten after all..

Help may be on the way sooner than they realize...by hook or by crook. Is that the smell of drones being fueled?

I'm all for making Iran pay for thier plans and a response by the USA is important. The fear I have is we have a President who takes advatage of every crisis for his own gain and to take the focus away from his falied policies. I woudl not be surprised if we are in a shooting war with IRAN within the next 6 months. Just in time for the election.
