Last rare rhinoceros in Vietnam killed by poacher, group says

Vietnam's rare Javan rhinoceros was declared extinct in that area after poachers killed the last remaining animal in the country for its horns, the World Wildlife Fund said.

“Vietnam must see this loss as another warning sign of its looming wave of species extinctions,” Dr. Barney Long, WWF’s Asian species expert, said in a statement. “The single most important action that is needed to save remaining threatened species like tigers and elephants is protection.”

The country had been struggling to keep the population alive amid widespread poaching that the WWF said was the cause of many Asian rhino species being brought to the "brink of extinction."

The WWF said people in certain parts of Asia believe the horns, when ground down and dissolved in boiling water, help treat typhoid fever or even cancer, the WWF said, noting that there has been no scientific proof of that.

The group said trying to bring the species back into the area won't work.

“Reintroduction of the rhinoceros to Vietnam is not economically or practically feasible," WWF’s Asian Elephant and Rhino Program Coordinator Dr. Christy Williams said.  "It is gone from Vietnam forever."

So now, the Javan rhino only exists in one area in the world, according to the WWF.

The Javan rhinoceros is in danger of becoming extinct.

The group reported that there is one population of less than 50 animals in the Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia. Now, workers will turn their attention there, working with anti-poaching patrols to hopefully keep the species from going extinct.

“For the Javan rhino, we now have to focus entirely on one site in Indonesia where strengthened protection is needed along with fast-tracking the proposed translocation and habitat management,” Long said.

What's the harm in believing in "traditional remedies" over hard facts and science? Poachers killing off the last of a species in the wild because the believe that its horn possesses magical healing powers.

1e still don't even know how many different species exist. Every year, we find new ones we didn't know about or thought had gone extinct. One is an oceangoing gar fish, that can make it's own head hot enough to melt ice. It melts a hole on ice shelfs in Anarctica, then crashes through the the polished window it left at the top of the hole to see penguins when one walks by. We thought this fish had gone extinct. oopsy

Someone is paying these poachers, we have to follow the money trail to really stop the insanity. The poachers are heartless but should not recieve any more punishment than the people behind the curtain. The doctors, eaters, cloth buyers and sellers that use the poachers products should all be executed.

Studies indicate that THC prevents the buildup of plaque in the brain that leads to Alzheimer's Disease. There are apparently conflicting study results, but WHEN it's proven that pot prevents Alzheimer's, it will be legal so fast it will make your head spin. I'm sure 7-11 has contingency plans for when that time comes.

Then do the research, extract the medicine, enhance it. Then make a delivery system that doesn't coat your lungs with goo. It's a drug plain and simple. There is no need for recreational use at all.

Ken, if you have ever had a drink with friends you have no right what-so-ever to make that comment. Plus, there is good reason for recreational use....it's fun.

Ah...Ken, the medicine is THC. When you use it, no matter what form it's in, it's effect will be the same as if it's recreational, get it? You can take the medicine out of heroin too, but guess what happens when you take that?

WhatWhatWhat, be happy you have the alcohol to play with, do you really need more? I can't even remember the last time I had drink, and I am not a religious person, so don't go there. It's not that I think alcohol should be banned, or that's it's evil,I just don't see a reason for it. Now you have to have some sort of line in the sand or society would be one big mess.

We are just a jar of flies. Do we consume and multiply or do we live one with the Earth? The decision has been made and our false religions justify our selfishness. The Indians warned us of our folly and we silenced them. It is to late to change. We must fill the Earth with humans and consume everything first. Then when out number fall back, we will all have the insight of what we have done. Maybe then a new religion will emerge. One that teaches restraint and unity for all; and most important a real respect for our true creator, EARTH. Much like the Indians beliefs. It's funny how things do repeat.

Last Rhino killed most likely as a result of overpopulation and the whiny excuse "I'm only trying to feed my children." from someone who had no business having kids in the first place if they couldn't afford to feed them.

Really hard to prevent those babies unless you think abstinence is going to work in rural Vietnam. Birth control is expensive so unless you're opening your wallet, you may want to shut your mouth. Opinions are like but t holes, everyone has one and with no argument, I'll just pass you the toilet paper.
