California campus police on leave after pepper-spraying

The University of California at Davis placed two police officers on administrative leave after they pepper-sprayed non-violent protesters at point-blank range, the school announced Sunday.

Video of the Friday incident has led to calls for the resignation of UC-Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi, who made the announcement of the officers on leave in a written statement Sunday afternoon. Katehi said she shares the "outrage" of students and was "deeply saddened" by the use of the chemical irritant by campus police.

"As chancellor, I take full responsibility for the incident," she said. "However, I pledge to take the actions needed to ensure that this does not happen again."

The school said the 10 protesters arrested were given misdemeanor citations for unlawful assembly and failure to disperse. Eleven protesters were treated for the effects of pepper spray, which stings the eyes and induces coughing, gagging and shortness of breath.

Put on leave? They should be terminated for their actions. But then again, at Kent State in Ohio back in 1970, a group of Ohio National Guardsmen litterally got away with murder later at their trials all because they had a jury biased in their favor! This miscarriage of justice was and is indeed repulsive!!!

On now it comes out. Wasn't city police, I didn't know these 'police" that were called in, the previous article were nothing more than campus rent-a-cops.
No wonder 2 of them wound up on leave.

With pay of course, these officers should be fired and criminal charges filed against them..
Their behaviour was so egregious and wrong, it cries out for justice.
    Peace

Every qualified California student should get a place in University of California(UC) system. That's a desirable goal for a public university. However, UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau displaces Californians qualified for education at Cal. with $50,600 tuition Foreigners.
Paying more is not a better education. UC tuition increases exceed the national average rate of increase. The UC Board Of Regents jeopardizes Californians attending higher education by making UC the most expensive public university.
Self-serving tuition increases are used by UC President Mark Yudof to increase the pay of 80,000 eligible faculty & others. Payoffs like these point to higher operating costs and still higher tuition for Californians. Instate tuition consumes 14% of Ca. Median Family Income! UC is hijacking our kids’ futures: student debt.
I agree that faculty in higher education and senior management, like Yudof and Birgeneau, should consider the students' welfare & put it high on their values.
Deeds unfortunately do not bear out the students' welfare values of UC Berkeley Birgeneau’s senior management and the UC Board of Regents.

Let the chancellor eat her words, of course dipped in pepper spray...she needs to go too...pepper is an irritant and I'm sure if it got into the lungs it would cause difficulty breathing...much less some dufus sprays it intentionally in the mouth and throat...this story gets worse and worse...aside from the fact these kids were not trespassing but tuition paid
students. The university need to pay for these people
injuries and let everyone go who had a hand in the chain of custody of this debacle...

Never happen in Canada? What news have you been watching, the fantasy network? Don't you remember the APEC summit a while ago in Vancouver, Chretien and his "Me, pepper, I put it on my food" comment when asked about the pepper spraying of protesters.

Well put, jack. Thank you. Like George Patton above, I too remember what happened on May 4,1970 at Kent State U in Ohio when 13 students were shot down in cold blood, killing 4 of them outright. The very idea that their killers got off scott free still makes my blood boil to this very day!!!
