ACLU raps Apple: Put abortion info on iPhone

Siri can help you find drugstores and bars, but the iPhone 4S digital assistant is clueless when it comes to the locations of abortion clinics, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

The advocacy group this week launched an online petition asking people to send e-mails to Apple saying that "if Siri can tell us about Viagra, it should not provide bad or no information about contraceptives or abortion care. Send a message to Apple: Fix Siri."

"Although it isn't clear that Apple is intentionally trying to promote an anti-choice agenda, it is distressing that Siri can point you to Viagra, but not the Pill, or help you find an escort, but not an abortion clinic," the group wrote in a blog post Wednesday. "We're confident that the developers at Apple want to provide iPhone users with accurate information."

Apple said Thursday the omission was not intentional:

"Our customers want to use Siri to find out all types of information and while it can find a lot, it doesn't always find what you want," Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison said. "These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone. It simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better and we will in the coming weeks."

As a woman if you rely on a voice named Siri from a smart phone to help you make decisions in your reproductive future, obviously there is a problem with Self not a electronic device!

    @mbwatt:
    I agree.
If, as a woman, you rely on a voice named Siri for your reproductive decisions, you shouldn't think of breeding...

I'm pro choice but I feel its a personal decision. If you need directions to a a clinic then they should be fair and provide them. People seem to think those who decided to get a abortion are embrassed or ashamed there not the thought of a wanted pregnancy is embrassing that's why seek abortions. I don't think it's a decision that ours really should not have say over like states or government and a phone service.

Siri was created by Apple. They don't have to do squat if they don't want to.
Don't want to buy the IPhone? Then don't.
You people never cease to amaze me. You always want "private" industry to cater to your demands.
Maybe they just don't give a rat's rearend about you. Ever think of that?

Just watch, people are going to be asking Siri all kinds of things now – how do I join the KKK, where can I buy tons of ammonium nitrate, where can I bury a body with little traffic. Will the ACLU jump to their defense too if they complain?

    "Anti-Choice"? Seriously?
    They've reduced themselves to calling Pro-lifers "Anti-Choice"?
So I suppose they are Pro-Abortionists. They care nothing for life but they want, no they NEED, people to have abortions to continue their agenda. They need the donations to continue to come in.
What a pathetic group of "little" people the ACLU is. They should change their name because they care nothing for civil liberties.
The only thing they care about is keeping their pockets filled with other's cash.
Why don't OWS start marching on THEIR headquarters? At least then they'd be doing something usefull.

Does Siri give information on pregnancy counciling? Maybe that is where a woman should turn if she finds herself in the situation where she has an unwanted pregnancy.
Just like the liberals to always turn to abortion to rid themselves of the inconvenience of their own immature and irresponsible actions.

      Thank you!
research shows that when women are shown what is growing inside them... like they need a roadmap..
they opt not to have an abortion. go figure.
When a woman is pregnant, she is expecting a HUMAN BABY. you can call it a fetus to make yourself feel better about
killing your CHILD to not have to grow up. THINK ADOPTION.

Spoken like a true male chovenist pig that you most likely are. When medical science can allow a male to get pregnant and carry a baby for 9 months and then be responsible for raising it – usually alone -only then should a male have any say at all in what a woman does about an unwanted pregnancy. My body my egg that was fertilized in error so butt out thank you very much.

Just like the conservatives to try and take away a woman's right to choose.

That will never happen. The female in this day and age has realized she does not have to be an incubator for a man who has little to do with the pregnancy. 10 seconds does not allow you to dictate to a female what she should do. We no longer wish to stay in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant. So take care of your own business and I will do the same.

    @Mike:
    No, Mike, they're no "pro-abortionists", they're pro-choice.
And who the fook are "they" that call anti-abortionists "anti-choice"?
And why the hell is this even a political discussion?
Like you've already stated, it's Apple's decision to do anything; why are you putting *your* beliefs into this?
I'm against abortion, but I'm not against *choice*.
I think this is really a stupid thing for the ACLU to stick their stupid noses into, like I said in the first post of this thread.

There is also an ancient device known as a – let's see if I can remember – a "phone book" – is that it? I'm not sure, it's been so long.

But I agree, Apple doesn't HAVE to do ANYTHING. Not yet, comrades...
