U.S. wants drone back from Iran, Obama says

President Barack Obama said Monday that the United States has asked Iran to return a U.S. drone aircraft that Iran claims it recently brought down in Iranian territory.

"We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond," Obama said in a news conference.

The president's comments come one day after it was reported that an Iranian official said the country would not return the drone.

"No nation welcomes other countries' spy drones in its territory, and no one sends back the spying equipment and its information back to the country of origin," said Gen. Hossein Salami, deputy commander of the Armed Forces, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

"It makes no difference where this drone originated and which group or country sent it to invade our air space," Salami said. "This was an act of invasion and belligerence."

What are the rules if I kick my ball "accidentally" over the fence and my neighbor decides to keep it?

hey truth, you know the rules, one set for US and one set for the rest of them, we make ours up to fit our needs and we make there's up to fit our needs

Exactly truth. Some people are blinded by their hate and/or aren't smart enough to get it. But yet they think they are qualified to comment about US policy.

Why are you commenting on US policy then? Unless of course you are part of determining US policy.

What about that U2, illegally flying over some rather powerful (at the time) country?

If this whole story is true, I find it hilarious that these things aren't rigged to self-destruct. Just tell it to destroy itself the moment it stops receiving commands. As easy as pie, and cheap as chips. Amateurs.

I find it rather appalling that people aren't completely up in arms about our spy drone ending up in enemy hands. I also find it appalling that the media report what seemed like 10,000 stories about Herman Cain and his indiscretions but there are very few stories about this drone.
And does Obama actually believe they are going to give it back just by asking? Really? You can't reason with Iran. No country, not even middle eastern countries, have ever been able to reason with them. But hey...Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize so he should be able to...right?

If you find the media reporting so appalling then why don't you either stop reading it or start your own news website so you can decide which stories to publish. Secondly, Obama knows good and well he won't get the drone back, he knows what he's doing asking for it back even if shortsighted and narrow minded people like you can't figure it out. You are expected by the wizard, Scarecrow.

Reason? You mean you find it "reasonable" to spy on another country with the intention of attacking it and then asking for your toys back? Even an American can be that self-righteous. Or can you?

SO TRUE! I had to dig big time to find this story. It is funny that the liberal response is that if you don't like it start your own news organization. Yeah I have $20 billion in my wallet to take on CNN.

Yeah, O was pretty sure that there was a way to detonate these things?? Still think it looks WAY too good for something that crashed....or as Iran says "floated down like a leaf"?????
Maybe the U.S. could get it's Mossad "buddies" to take care of it like they did the various other people that mossad just doesn't care for?

Well, can someone please clear up for me with facts–. I understand that these Drones ARE capable of being destroyed at a distance and that Obama made the decision NOT to do so. IF that is true, it really begs lots of questions about leadership and the perceived weakness of Obama. Yes, unfortunately I am a Democrat with no other choice.

If you have a loss of signal cannot communicate with the drone in order to control it then how does one send a self destruct signal? The wizard is expecting you, Scarecrow.

My country never ceases to amaze me how it behaves with regard to the rest of the world and how naive both our leadership and congress is in general. The drone came from us..to spy on them...we were stupid enough to loose it...now they want it back.....truly a ridiculous and laughable situation !!!! Sorry ...I'm with Iran on this one...our loss is their gain. Maybe next time the bean counters will listen to the folks that come up with these secret things and how to protect them. IDIOT AWARD AGAIN GOES TO WASHINGTON

If the president of the US says to give it back, that means one of two things, Either you comply or we'll target its location and blow it up.

I guess when the thing has been disected to its smallest screw and not destroyed we can assume we did not have a president at the helm, rather some guy who liked to bow down to middle-eastern nations.

AND...Ahmadinjad was seen on road and driving by me...looking lividly at me... and travelling in Akron, NY twice in same week in year 2009. Authorities were reported to ...and I had tried to detain the guy by my praying.... perhaps that is why there was a storm to delay airlines for awhile...but that happens all the time anyhow.
2011 I had reported same Iranian President to be posing as a doctor in local city of Buffalo's largest medical school and I guess he wills for patients.... what do you think about this drone ?

Well, the issue is if they keep it does it continue to send info back, just collect info for future retrieval, or is it just a plant to see if the Iran government has the intelligence and education to really know how to manage technology at this level. This story could be so much more complex, or not.

Jeff, your sarcasm and uninformed comment aside, I did find the answer to this which is what is called a fact :"Experts and officials acknowledge that there is NO self-destruct mechanism on the Sentinels, which are used both by the military and the CIA.
This is bound to raise questions about why an aircraft would be developed that stays intact when it crashes and could get into anybody's hands."
There Obama made the decision to not retrieve the drone nor to destroy it conventionally.
